It's rare to stay in a 5 star hotel where a 4pm checkout is offered the next day!! What a great way to finish a luxurious weekend in a room that was immaculate, awesome view, fantastic service and an all round memorable visit. This hotel is still a leader in the game

Wonderful Hotel with a Fantastic Location!!!!!!!!

One of my top criteria in selecting a hotel is location.....walking distance preferred, minimal transportation time to the sites you want to see, the places you want to be is also a major consideration. Knowing if the area is "safe" to walkabout must be determined by each person's comfort zone in what they witness in the area they are staying remembering that daylight surroundings do not necessarily reflect night time surroundings.
The Grand Hyatt Melbourne is a hotel I would return to in a heartbeat. It's location in Melbourne is two blocks from the train station that can take you anywhere, about eight blocks from the Yarra River (which has so much growth like restaurants, apts., art galleries and boathouses.....great to watch rowing action!!), fantastic complimentary bus transportation for visitors and great shopping all around.
When we arrived a few hours earlier than our reservation, the staff made sure we had a room available immediately. This room had a few of the restaurant roof. We called the front desk requesting a Yarra River view if one was available, offering to pay for the difference if any, as this might be the only time we would have the luxury of visiting Australia.
We were moved four floors up with a complete riverview room that had great river city view including the "Eiffel Tower" light show from a contemporary art gallery across the Yarra. Our situation was addressed immediately. We did not pay an extra charge for this room although there was one.
Melbourne is so cosmopolitan and yet so refined with history. Do not miss the parks that include a tribute to JFK and Captain Cook. Do not miss the mix of the streets making neighbors of McDonald's, Chanel, etc.etc.etc.
The Grand Hyatt Melbourne is wonderful in staff, location, rooms and amenities. Well worth the fee when transportation, restaurant, etc. costs are filtered into a special visit.

When you need to change rooms 3 times in a supposedly 5 star hotel, you know something's wrong. The first room was situated next to a service lift so there was constant noise whilst the housekeeping staff went about their business (is this a hotel or an industrial destruction site? How do cleaners make so much noise?). In the second room the sound-proofing was so bad that I could hear the people in the room above using their toilet - the unmistakeable sound of flushing water & unfortunately everything that precedes it. I complained about this at 3am to reception & was told that the hotel was full & no other rooms were available at all. I had no option but to go to the to the manager & it miraculously turned out there was another room which I was moved to. This one had a mattress so soft I could feel the metal springs through it. Next morning I asked again for a quiet room with a firm bed - is that really to much to ask of a 5 star hotel in the centre of one of Australia's biggest cities? Fourth time lucky I got a decent room. All 4 rooms had outdated, noisy ac units, ancient tv sets & the bathroom fittings have certainly seen better days (the 80s I'm guessing?) & the splendour of the lobby certainly belies the shabbiness of the rooms. One plus point though was the gym though which was well equipped & modern unlike the rest of the hotel.

Wonderful hotel. The Grand Hyatt is absolutely beautiful and in a perfect location, walking distance to just about everything in the city even the sports complexes. It is the only place I would ever stay at when visiting Melbourne. The rooms are a bit small, but very luxurious. The bathrooms are large and all marble, very well appointed. The staff was very friendly and helpful.

Best 5* hotel in Melbourne

This hotel cannot get any better. With great views of the city, friendly staff and luxurious rooms, I would recommend this hotel to anyone staying in Melbourne. I live in Melbourne and it's a favorite of mine when I want a night away. Great hotel all round.

Excellent experience in the heart of Melbourne

Stayed for three nights in March 2006 and loved the hotel.Great location close to all the city has to offer.The hotel was what you would expect of a hotel of this size and class.Very comfortable,very large room with great view of the city.Excellent breakfast with plenty of variety. Top class staff for whom nothing was too much trouble.Would gladly stay here again.One of the best hotels we stayed in on our tour of Australia.My wife and I both thought Melbourne was the best city in Australia.

t let the foyer fool you

I stayed at the Grand hyatt for 2 nights in July. The hotel has a grand entrance, great foyer and modern reception area. Don't let this fool you. My room (on the 20th floor) was old and run down in the extreme. The chair in the room had been used so long that the padding was threadbare. The TV was tiny and made a very loud static noise whenever you changed channels (annoying at night when you are trying to be quiet so your wife can sleep). The plumbing was incredibly noisy and kept me awake until close to midnight then woke me at about 5am.
The staff were friendly and helpful when I made the occasional request and the bathroom was good (separate bath, decent water pressure in the shower etc).
Overall, this is a hotel with a 5 star ground floor and 3 star rooms.

Grand Hyatt Hotel - Great Place to Stay

We recently spent 3 days at the Grand Hyatt Hotel during the Commonwealth Games and could not have enjoyed it more.
We chose the hotel from the list offered as part of a package because of its close proximity to many of the venues, despite having read several lukewarm reviews.
What a surprise - our room was on the 27th Floor and had a wonderful view out over the river and city. It was a joy to look at, especially at night.
The room itself was spotlessly clean, very comfortable and certainly not shabby. The bathroom had both a bath and shower and was a good size.
The hotel was extremely busy and yet any staff members we had dealings with were pleasant and efficient.
Breakfast was the only meal we ate in the hotel and it was of a high standard and nicely presented.

We liked our room on the club floor. It was clean and had a view of other buildings. We didn't like that we weren't allowed to have soda in the club lounge until the exact time allowed.

I stayed in Grand Hyatt Melbourne for 3 nights, reserved a room at the club floor which can access to the club lounge on 31st floor. I was given a room on high floor but the window is facing to an office building. The office building is so close that I can see people working there! The room in fact is not very clean as dirts can be found on the walls and the room got an unpleasant smell. The temperature control is bad too. After some negotiation I was assigned to another room at a lower floor with a better view. And this room is even worse, the water plumbing is terribly noisy. I was waken up by these noise early every morning. I cannot imagine this will happen in a 5-star hotel. The club lounge has a good view. Food are okay but it's a bit crowded during breakfast time. The price is 5-star but the hotel facilities and staff service are very disappointing. I don't think I will choose this hotel again.

Awful Rooms

Being a very frequent traveller (more than 70 nights in Hotels per year) I have seen many good and bad hotels. The Grand Hyatt used to be my choice of hotel in Melbourne due to its excellent location and it does have a lovely lobby area. Having not been to Melbourne for a few years I wrongly believed that the Grand Hyatt would still be a great place to stay. what a shock. The rooms were very very cold and so run down, I couldnt believe that they had not renovated it. The particular room that I had was dirty, had marks all over the walls and the bathroom was awful. I even cut my foot in a piece of broken glass on the carpet. I would never stay here again. Once fabulous now very over rated and tired.

Top Local Tips for Melbourne

What is it about Melbourne? All of my Sydney friends love Melbourne, and it's hard for me to understand why. We were disappointed, because it seemed like so many American cities. We were told it's a "foodie" city with great restaurants, bars, and clubs. We were also told it was a shopping mecca. For Americans, most of the shops are available at any large U.S. city. The food, we felt, was no better than Sydney, and certainly no match for our native San Francisco. We didn't give the bars and clubs a fair chance, so I can't comment on that aspect. My theory is that Melbourne is a city that non-urban Australians (and also people from Sydney) go to just as suburban or rural Americans visit big cities. Since there aren't many of these in Australia, Melbourne must be special in that regard. I must say that I don't feel it offers anything beyond Atlanta, Chicago, St. Louis, Dallas, Philadelphia, etc. A friend tells me I'm spoiled because I'm from San Francisco; perhaps!

Excellent 'Italian' Try Cecconi's Cantina. Its Italian but not if the pizza and pasta variety. One of my very favourites.

Stage Shows There is so much to do and see in Melbourne and as a Melbournian we have all the stage shows and theatres right at our door step so come and enjoy what Melbourne has to offer
