Historical Traveller Reviews of Golden Tulip Melbourne Hotel

We booked a studio on through wotif for 4 nights and had previously read reviews for this property on this page. We found the location excellent ,the spacious well appointed studio was on 15th floor with wonderful views. Staff were very helpful and we did not think 6 steps to the front entrance were a problem and we are both over 60. We did notice an electric wheelchair ramp that could be folded down so guess if 6 steps are too many you may need to ask the hotel to assist. We had a kitchen with fridge, microwave and all we needed to cook if we wished so did not avail ourselves of the breakfast or dinner. If it is important to you we found the hotel very quiet and did not get noise from adjacent rooms. We took a look at the spa and pool complex but did not have time to try them out even though it looked inviting. This hotel was perfect for us and we would not hesitate to stay again

Excellent Location, Price and Facilities

Oaks on Market is in an excellent location to see Melbourne. At the end of the street (1 minute walk) is Starbucks and at the other end of the street you can catch the tram. We caught the tram that took us along Richmond street and to the Macro (Organic store.) While in Melbourne you must make sure you get to this store as it has an excellent cafe and a great supermarket. We walked back from the store along Richmond street and saw plenty of shops.

The Casino is just a 5 minute stroll away and if you want to walk to the city that is another 5 to 10 minute walk but there is plenty of shops to see along the way.

The apartment hotel has a cafe but we didn't eat at it. We booked a studio room and I asked for one with a view. The staff where very happy to accomodate my wishes and at night the view is brilliant looking over the Yarra. The studio apartment was as good as some of the five star hotels I have stayed at. The bed was comfortable (on the firm side), there was a couch and full cooking facilities. The bathroom was spacious with a good bath and shower.

We only paid $150 for this room and I would definately stay here again. The apartments are fairly new and look modern and clean.

Very happy!

My husband and I have just returned from 4 nights at Oaks On Market and really cannot complain at all. The location was excellent- we walked everywhere from the MCG, Telstra Dome, Bourke Street shopping malls, Chinatown and even the Vic Markets were only 20 mins away. To get into St Kilda was easy with a tram stop 100ms away. I requested a studio apartment with river views ( as advised by tripadvisor forums) and we happily found ourselves on the 22nd floor (Room 2207) with a great view. Yes, you can see a building opposite but as we were out most of the day and night this was not an issue. And the lights at night were lovely! The room was spacious, light, clean and fully functional. The breakfast was great and service polite and friendly. So all in all we were very satisfied. We paid about $145 pn through for accommodation and buffet breakfast.

Good location - reasonable rooms

Melbourne is an easy city to walk and Oaks on Market provides quick access to the key Southbank, Collins Street and Bourke Street areas. The morning manager was also very helpful and got to know us over the 2 days were stayed.

We booked a studio apartment and on arrival were told that our room would not be ready until 2.00pm (standard check in time). We accepted an upgrade to a studio room overlooking the Yarra and Casino complex for $10/night. I think this was just a way to get some more money from us but after an early morning flight didn't want to argue.

The room itself was a good size and the bathroom enormous. A small fridge, microwave and stovetop would have made self catering easy but the many great restaurants in Melbourne meant we didn't need to cook ourselves.

A few room design features left me asking questions though. The air conditioning vent was directly above the bed so it blew air at us all night. The bedside lamps didn't provide enough light to read so you had to use the main lights - quite inconvenient as the switch was very hard to reach from bed and the whole room was bright so another person couldn't sleep. Also if you are on the bed and looking out the window you look at another building. Had the bed been on the opposite wall it would have provided a great view of the river, Crown and the water. Perhaps other rooms have different layouts. And as another reviewer pointed out, there is no ramp to roll bags up and into the hotel. Fine for us with small bags but if you were staying for longer you could have heavy bags.

Given Melbourne's winter weather, an umbrella should have been provided in the room. I asked at reception and the helpful chap said not at the moment but to check back later. When I asked another person later in the day there were also none available. But she made it seem like an ordeal. So I just gave up asking. Disappointing for a 4.5 star property (which it claims to be).

Great Find

We arrived at 6pm - and had to be at the MCG by 7pm to watch the footy, we promptly checked in and heading to our one bed room apartment. To our shock someone was already in our room . . whoopsie. Reception felt awful and quickly changed our keys, went to our room which was just the right size for two of us awesome pillows and a king sized bed. Modern look and nice sized bathroom. We got changed ready for a night at the footy - reception had a cab waiting for us and once again apologised for the room mix up.

Hone by 11pm from the footy decieded to order a curry and stew from the "sleepwalkers menu " - was k but not worth $20.

Brekkie on the other had was lovely a nice variety but not over the top, bacon , eggs , beans , grilled toms, little brekky snags,, cereals, toast , juices. Very good value for $13!!

That night be had a drink at the hotel before heading out for dinner on Lygon St, reception shouted us our first round to apologise for the room mix up earlier which was a nice touch.

On our last nite we had dinner and a few drinks at the hotel bar - menu had about 13 selections such as pasta, nachos, steak all at very good prices.

Location was close to the trams and a 7 11. Tram out the front took us straight to our game at the Telstra dome.

Would def stay again!!

Expected More Australian Hospitality

from lancenyk
My friend and I arrived at the hotel in the evening around 6pm. To reach the reception, one had to climb a short fleet of steps and there was no ramp to allow guests to get their luggage up those steps. Our luggages were bulky and there was no porter, a receptionist saw us approach but looked away immediately to resume his work.

On check-in, we were told our room was showing up in the system as a dirty room. Instead of sending someone up to confirm the actual status of the room, we were told to go up and have a look ourselves and only to contact reception if the room is indeed dirty.

Lighting in the room was poorly designed.

Upon reaching the room we realised that even though we had the appetite for some room service, there was no menu in sight. There is also no free cable TV and a movie on average costs about AUD15.00.

We were more annoyed at the fact that help was not offered to carry our luggages up the steps and as guests, we had to verify the status of the room ourselves; which if i may add, is quite absurd!

We were also disappointed that the usual Australian hospitality was nowhere in sight. Definitely a 3 star property after having stayed at the Oaks in Adelaide as well.

Other than the above, we agree that Oaks hotels and apartments are considered good value-for-money and will continue to choose the brand unless something more unfortunate happens in the future.

Fantastic value for money

Stayed 4 nights over the long weekend. Hotel room was very spacious and modern, big bathroom and fantastic views. Even though the hotel was very busy, staff were always helpful and pleasant and things ran very smoothly. Breakfast was fantastic. Everything was close enough to walk and being close to the Casino and Southbank was a bonus. Have stayed in Melb at 8 different hotels and this is right up there with the best of them.

good value, great location

from hen302
Recently had 3 nights at the Oaks on Market, in 2 studio rooms for family of four. Rooms were fine, good size and well furnished. Bathroom and water pressure great.
Staff not quite up to standard. A bit confusing at checkin as I had reserved more than one room and a little slow.
Breakfast was the worst aspect of the service. I dont think that they have quite got this right yet as there was quite a wait to get a table and food was not replenished very quickly. They just seemed really understaffed.
However, that aside, it is good value for money and in a great location and we all enjoyed our weekend.

We had four nights at Oaks on Market at the beginning of June and could not fault it, right from checkin the staff were helpful, the room was clean, modern and spacious and the location was fantastic. Definitely excellent value for money and would stay again without a doubt.

Top Local Tips for Melbourne

The food is incredible! There are so many places to eat in Melbourne you dont know where to start. European cafe does a fantastic(expensive $17) big breakfast but perfect for a day of sightseeing. Cookie does delicious thai fusion food - although a litle ont eh procey side for the portion sizes. Bigmouth in St Kilda does a yummy lunch don't go past here - very affordable too! Aux Batifeaux on Nicholson Street is an amazing french restaurant and stephan is a fantastic waiter. The food is exquisite. The waterfront out in Port Melbourne does an amazing seafood platter but it is HUGE and best to share with someone else at $140!!

Go to a game Go and watch a game of AFL at the Telstra Dome of MCG

Airport Shuttle If you want to save some money on taxis whilst in Melbourne make sure you get the Airport shuttle. You will find it just outside the domestic terminal and the bus will take you into the city and there you will catch another shuttle bus which will drop you off at your hotel. Make sure your order the return trip the day before you want to leave. It is an excellent service and much cheaper than a taxi.
