Good base
from TwigThe breakfast room was pleasant and overlooked the Telstra Dome. It didn't offer a cooked breakfast but there was plenty of choice of cereals, breads etc. The guy on reception said there was a cafe on the corner which did cooked breakfasts, but we found the hotel's breakfast adequate.
Location very good, walking distance from river, and centre of town and free tram runs near the hotel which does a circle of the CBD.
Hotel is fairly new and offers good value for a basic hotel so near the city centre.
Great hotel in a good position.
from A TripAdvisor MemberClose to the harbour where there is great resturants. Also you can get a free tram from right outside the hotel, this does a loop of the city and is really good. make sure you visit the Crown casino. it is an amazing building and has lots of shops, cinema and resturants too. If you go for a meal there go outside when the clock stricks the hour. this is because the water features that are all the way along the harbour start to shoot fire high in the sky and it is really amazing to watch.
Really liked Melbourne, it has a really nice atmosphere.
Great location hotel
from enzfrnzThe staff wasn't very friendly, expect when I checked in. The receptionist was nice enough to point out a few details about the property. However, when I asked questions of a different staff member, they were not helpful at all. There was also a charge for a meal I did not eat on my bill at check out, but when I told them it was not mine, they removed the charge right away with no hassle.
In all, great hotel, location and price if you are staying in Melbourne.
Conveniently located
from A TripAdvisor MemberAffordable hotel right in the city center
from garboYou can take the airport bus, which is around $14AUD per person and drops you at the bus station, two blocks away across the street. We took a taxi from the airport, since we arrived after 2 am and it cost around $35-40 AUD. Taxis are pretty pricey in Melbourne.
We would definately stay here again. A nice looking hotel for the price.

Atlantis - good value, would stay again
from SandradhIt is on the edge of the CBD (not as central as some of the other hotels which are right in the middle of the CBD) but in 10 mins you can walk to the centre of the CBD, or alternatively you can walk 30 seconds and catch the free tram into town. (Or pay approz Aus$6 for an all day tram pass which is great value if you want to visit areas in zone 1 - which spreads a long way - we visited the zoo, the jail, Bridge Street (for shopping), a couple of the other close suburbs for food and shopping - speaking of food - I highly recommend Topolinos - get an entree size pasta only! great value, great taste and huge!). Anyway, back to the Atlantis.
It is a reasonably new hotel (I think about 3 years old), most of the rooms dont have very good views (unless you have a upper floor room facing the road and you can see the stadium and Docklands), but since we mainly used it only for sleeping and showering, it wasnt a concern to us. My only problem with the shower was that it dosnt have a door or curtain, so even with the bath mat down the bathroom floor gets a little wet, also, they dont provide flannels.
The rooms were a decent size with a couch, table, desk & chair, bed (of course), wardrobe, place for suitcase to sit, fridge (no mini bar) and TV on unit with cupboard/ drawers.
They only serve buffet continental breakfasts - which are AUS$8 per person, we ate for free, as included in the price when booked on the website (see top of review for address). There are a few places close to town that you can walk to which are a good price for cooked breakfasts if you prefer. They dont do any other meals, but they do have a list of restaurants that will deliver meals (we didnt use as ate out).
The check in and check out were quick and efficient, no waiting around and they were also helpful with any questions we had about any little queries we had :).
We travelled from the airport by the Skybus - Aus$24 return pp, which I recommend as the terminal is a short walk across the road and a couple of buildings up the road from the hotel, and is good value.
In closing I would like to say that my partner and I had a fabulous time in Melbourne and will be going back, and would stay in the Atlantis again, as we found suited our purpose (and at a great price of Aus$89 per night including breakfast when booked on the Atlantis Express website!)
Good Value
from JULOfrVanReasonably priced central hotel

Trams are a great way to travel Trams are abundant on the streets of Melbourne, and are reasonably priced too. You might also like to get a day pass if you are treaveling a lot in a day. There's also a free tram service that goes around the city center. Who needs a bus when you've got trams?
Sunday Saver Metcard If you are in melbourne on a sunday then go to a convenience store/newsagent and buy a Sunday Saver metcard which lets you travel all day on a sunday anywhere in Melbourne for $2.50 no matter who you are. You cannot buy these tickets on the tram!
Docklands The Docklands area of Melbourne is undergoing a lot of work and when we went the Harbourside shopping complex was just then being completed with a few shops opening up, I think that this area will be the place to go for bargains as we found that downtown Melbourne was more full of high street retailers and boutique shops, whereas Harbourside has a lot of outlet stores there. There is also the southern star opening (like the london eye) which looked cool, not sure how much you'd see but would probably be worth going on. There are also loads of restaurants on the Docklands itself from italian to chinese to indian so I would definately recommend heading down there for a meal at least once.
