Good hotel, Fantastic Staff
from RoseAustralia
Stayed at hotel 26th June 2008 and so impressed I had to immediately write a review.
Booked the hotel through an award certificate and did not really know what to expect.
Booking in was simple and staff could not have been more helpful or friendly. All hotel services were thoroughly explained.
Allocated room was on Floor 1 with two double beds. Spotless, well laid out. Perhaps my only criticism was the bathroom was in need of a facelift. Beds comfortable and no noise from adjoining rooms. Complimentary undercover parking.
Dinner in the restaurant proved to be a good choice. Staff efficient and friendly, food of a good quality. Breakfast following morning was also of good quality.
Had a few issues where we needed help and evening staff could have not been more helpful and friendly.
I would certainly recommend this hotel to anyone who is looking for a well maintained hotel in a good location. Close to city, tram stop out front. The staff are an absolute asset to this establishment.

Very thoughtful, helpful, and understanding management. Nice, quiet rooms on the park side. Attempted to accommodate all my requests. Good breakfast choices. Close to Lygon street restaurants. Generally, a fine experience!

Very Good , Reliable Hotel
from senorgreg
We have stayed at the Rydges on Swanston a couple of times and would definitely return. The hotel is not spectacular to look at, but for the money you get a quality room, great location, and very helpful and genuine service.
The main reasons we like this hotel are the service and location. The staff have always been very friendly, and in particular, they seem to never want to say 'no' to our requests. They have always been keen to find a way to help us with whatever we ask for, whether it be a late check-out, breakfast in the restaurant after the official close time, etc. We really appreciate their willingness to be helpful.
Location. The hotel is located in the suburb of Carlton. Carlton is a delightful mix of good shopping, great restaurants and bars, and a unique Italian flair. On top of this, the university is near by and provides for a great diversity in the suburb. We especially like the choice of places for a late night eat or a late morning brunch. Finally, the hotel is very convenient to the city, with a tram stop right at the door taking you to the city in a little over five minutes.
Overall, not the Ritz Carlton, but a very good hotel in a great location.

Noisy hotel
from Hyperacusis
My wife and I stayed there over Easter, but we won't be staying there again. The hotel is structured in a square shape, with a ring of rooms on the inner layer, and the others on an outer layer. So basically windows of the inner rooms all face each other. The problem is that the air conditioning units from all the inner units are in the enclosed courtyard area. The noise from them can travel into the other rooms. It doesn't appear that the rooms are double-glazed to prevent this.
Staff relocated us to a corner room on the outer layer the following day. However, the second night was even worse than the first. I'm a fairly heavy sleeper, and even I was woken up by the persistent dull throb echoing through the room. It would go on for five minutes, then stop for a minute or two, then recommence. I put my ear to the external wall and noted the loud noise running through it. Fed up, I went down to reception at 3 a.m. to complain. The night manager's response was "Well, no-one else has complained". Great. He wouldn't even come to the room to check.
We debated switching rooms again, or even going elsewhere, but grudgingly stayed in the same room the following night. That night, there was no noise, suggesting that something had been running the previous night (possibly the spa on the roof? The manager said it wasn't the laundry). There was no apology from the staff when we checked out for the noise, whatever it was. If it was the spa or the pool then why wasn't the curfew being enforced?

It was disappointing to read your comments, we are in the process of sounproofing rooms where noise can on occassion be heard.
Your reference to the night staff is also a concern, and these comments have been discussed in length with my Front Office Manager to ensure a situation like this does not occur again.
We thank you for your valueable feeback, we look forward to welcoming you back.

Great Location!
from readingtraveller62
I stayed at the Rydges Carlton for two weeks at the beginning of January 2008. I had a good-sized and comfortable room overlooking the park and Swanston Street for the first few days. The bathroom was quite small, but with a good-sized bath and all facilities, and both room and bathroom were very clean, and well-serviced. The bed was extremely comfortable, and there was a nice easy chair and desk. The breakfasts were very good, with nice fresh fruit and a good variety of buffet items, plus newspapers. The staff were all really helpful and friendly.
The tram tracks outside the hotel were torn up and relaid while I was staying, and the hotel realised that my room would be noisy, and moved me to another room overlooking the park but further from Swanston Street. This second room was slightly smaller but also clean and comfortable. The helpfulness of the staff is also shown by them pointing out a special deal on breakfast prices, that I had missed in my initial jet-lagged state, and adjusting my room price to a better tariff almost without question.
The location of the hotel is excellent, being almost next to the University and within walking distance or a short tram ride of the city centre. Melbourne has excellent public transport, and I did not need a car at all in the two weeks I was there because of the hotel location, even though I travelled quite extensively around Melbourne. I would certainly stay in this hotel again and cannot understand the negative reviews posted by some.

Fantastic hotel great location
from sage72
We stayed at the hotel in January 2008. We were blown away by the service we recieved from reception, we were offered three maps and told how to catch the tram into the city, in the first five minutes we were there. Very impressed.
Our room was tastefully decorated and a great size. The room was spotless. I had read some other reviews and do not understand, I have travelled around the world and stayed at many hotels and can honestly say we could not find fault with either the quality of the service or quality of the facilities.
The locality of the hotel was fantastic for us, we loved walking five minutes to lygon street the restaurants were fabulous, and a very short tram ride to the city (so short we went staight through the city the first time) we had booked a dinner at Dracula's which was ten minutes walk. Must say wish we had stayed at the hotel for dinner the menu looked fantastic, and Dracula's was crap!!!!
Breakfast at the hotel was great the made to order eggs were fabulous. More than enough variety even for my fussy husband.
All in all a fantastic place to stay a great location and very professional and helpful staff.

Disappointed
from justmeok006
Well I'm not sure where to start! We had previously stayed at Rydges Adelaide and absolutely fell in love with the place. Hence the reason why we decided to book in at the Rydges Carlton when we were attending a special event in Melbourne. We booked via the Rydges website and booked an Executive suite. The website warned that the hotel was undergoing renovations so we were not perturbed by the mess that this creates! The room was a good size and the bed was wonderful, however the bathroom was a disgrace! Apart from being extremely small the toilet obviously had some kind of problem as it ran all night. (and meant we had a very disturbed night's sleep). There was masking tape wrapped around one of the pipes which I can only assume was because of a leak. The bathroom had a feint mouldy odour. The shower was also mouldy and the water flow was positively dangerous! One minute freezing cold and the next minute BOILING hot. We had friends that booked an adjoining room and their shower was the same. We did not have time at checkout to advise the hotel of the problem, but I will be sending them the details. WE did not have breakfast as we decided to go to an eatery in the CBD instead so I cannot comment on the food. All in all this was a most disappointing stay considering the room rate, it is way overpriced.

A nice hotel
from coconutsmoothie
I have stayed at the Rydges on a number of occasions over the last few years and have always found it to be clean and extremely comfortable. I have no complaints whatsoever.
For the person who wrote that the taxi price (from the airport) mentioned on the website is 100% more in reality - well all I can say is you maybe had a shonky taxi driver or one who didn't know the city so well as it sometimes happens. I have never paid more than $40 except one time when I wasn't paying attention to the route and the taxi driver decided to take me on a small tour of Melbourne. Can't blame the hotel for that.

Excellent location, average hotel with some issues
from Happy_Homebody
The Rydges was an average business hotel. The furnishings are decent. The staff was friendly and responsive. I didn't have any problem getting access to the laundry room.
Issues with the hotel: Don't bother with the pool/spa, it's not very nice. Also, there was some repair work going on during the day that resulted in a loud racket from incessant hammering--thank goodness I was out for most of the day. You may get a bit of street noise in your room, earplugs are helpful if you're a light sleeper. I agree that the elevator is slow. Take the stairs instead, unless you are carrying your bags. Wireless internet access is expensive.
However, the location of the hotel is indeed excellent. Tram stop is practically on the front step, the university is next door, the delicious eateries on Lygon St. are only a couple of blocks away, and if you are an active walker, you can walk to the CBD. The hotel is a good choice if you have business at the university and don't want to hire a car, and I would stay there again if I were in the same situation.

The worst place you could ever stay
from viks4all
A holiday that turned into a disaster by staying at the Rydges, Carlton. The advertised room was supposed to be a newly renovated but instead they gave us a unrenovated room. They charged us for parking and did not provide parking. The bathroom was terrible, the bath ahd been removed but the tiles was left. The water got stagnant in the bath when i went for shower and the water would not flow out, it almost flooded the room. The TV was not functioning, there was no DVD in room. I would never recomend anyone to stay here and i think i would never ever stay at any other Rydges property even if i am given free accomodation. The worst place that you could ever stay.
