Top Local Tips for Port Arthur

Other Things to see around the area that are not well known If you are planning a visit to Port Arthur, be sure to visit the Eaglehawk Lookout Point, but don't take anything less than a 4 x 4 - they don't point this out when you see the turnoff. Its also probably a 20 minute drive up a gravel hill - then another 15 minute walk down a very steep hill - if you suffer any form of vertigo don't even think about it. The lookout is on a steep slope, with no barriers and quite frightening to stand on, but well worth the view. Another site to visit is the old Coal Mine which is up the road a bit in Nubeena. Turn left at the town and follow the signs, its really interesting and not many tourists know about this site.

Port Arthur Spend at least a full day and the ghost tour is wothwhile.

Visit Port Arthur, by all means. But.... No need to stay there the night. Exploring Port Arthur Historic Site is an absolute must, with the guided walking tours excellent value. Thoroughly enjoyed the time wandering around Port Arthur, but staying at the Comfort Inn was an experience I hope i never have to endure again. We wanted to do the Ghost Tour, and we drove back to Hobart that same night - more than achievable, as long as care is taken on the roads.
