Historical Traveller Reviews of Hilton Adelaide Hotel

This hotel is a joke!

from angusMelbourne
My wife and I stayed here over the weekend of February 24th &25th.
Our 'Queen de luxe' room on the 17th floor was quite small and in need of refurbishment. There were numerous sticky finger marks above the bed head and several stains on the carpet. In a word it was tired! Our biggest complaint was that the hotel was the venue for a convention, the delegates to which quite literally swarmed over the entire facility. It was impossible, for example, for my wife & I to find a place to have a quiet drink after our arrival, or indeed at any other time during our two night stay. Service was virtually non existent and the staff, although polite & friendly were very 'ho hum' about the whole affair. To describe this hotel as 5 star is highly misleading. In my view, as one who travels widely both in Australia & overseas, it would struggle to make 4 stars and my guess is that this situation will remain unchanged until there is some real competition, although from what I gather from the locals this isn't likely to happen anytime soon! We won't be hurrying back to this city and neither will we patronising this or any other Hilton hotel in the future.

underwhelming and overpriced

from maggs07
This is not a 5 star hotel in fact it is possibly pushing it to describe it as 4 star. My executive 18th floor room was adeqaute but uninspiring and at AUD$425 a night I expected to be a little more impressed. Very limited hanging space in the room which while it must have been renovated a few years ago has the classic motel style layout. On a positive note - nice flat screen TV with a relatively simple control system and Crabtree and Evelyn shampoo etc.

Beware the building work happening somewhere on the ocean facing side of the building ....not a drama after dark but noticeably noisy even from the 18th floor during the day.

Biggest problem is the lack of front of house staff, what there is tries to be helpful and are charming and friendly however- only two on the checkout desk on a busy Friday morning at 8am and no cabs at all. A despairing line of businesspeople and tourists stood in the 38 degree heat outside the hotel while a lone attendant tried to attract cabs for those of us needing to get to the airport. No attempt to find out who was urgent or not and organise sharing to get us all to the airport. Pretty basic stuff for a 4-5 star hotel even if there had been a cab shortage for some reason.

Need to pick up their game from a service perspective. I was traveling on business and missed my plane and will not stay at this hotel again. I am sure there are hotels that are better value for similiar decor etc.

No problems, nice stay!

from ZedZedH
Stayed in a Queen Executive room, under the Hilton Indulgence package. Upon arrival there was a lovely bottle of champagne waiting for us (which is part of the package I believe). Check in was fast and hassle-free, and the concierge (Hugh) was very friendly and helpful. Room had a fab view over Victoria Square, and was on the 16th floor. All 4/5 star expected conveniences were there, and everything seemed to be in excellent condition. They arranged for a DVD player in the room for us without hassle. Lovely big LCD widescreen TV. Room service was quick and attentive. The staff in the bar and restaurant downstairs were pleasant and efficient, and the food in the restaurant was fairly good. The only nit-picky thing I can add is that there was a faint rumbling sound early in the morning as a generator or something on the roof kicked in. Only I could hear this -- my partner could not -- and it lasted for about 10 minutes. I think it was at about 8am, so not too bad. Besides that, I can't fault anything. Overall we enjoyed the stay, and although I can not say that it was the most amazing luxury hotel on the planet, it was up to standard and very stress-free to stay here. If in Adelaide, I would not hesitate to stay here again, as it is in a lovely location and there were no problems at all. Recommended.

Excellent Hotel Great Location

from AJSG
Stayed at this property Dec 25- Jan 1 2007. Two adults and two teenagers ( 2 adjoining rooms) . The rooms were on the 13th floor renovated with nice bathrooms and plasma TVs. The rooms were very clean an pleasant to be in. The gym, pool and tennis courts were great and not crowded. The staff was very pleasant and heplful. The hotel is in a great location. The tram outside of the hotel takes you to the beach. There are also free buses outside that loop the city. We had the buffet breakfast in the ''Brasserie & Grange'', it was very good. For a quick coffee in the morning there is a kiosk in front of the restaurant that you can order a la carte breakfast. We were there for New Years eve and it was great to see the fireworks from the pool deck. Overall great experience and good value. Would stay there again.

Enjoyed the Hilton but good be better

from Longdrive
To celebrate New Year's Eve we booked an Indulgence package at the Hilton as the hotel is situated overlooking Victoria Square where a fireworks display is held at midnight.
The package included access to the club floor, breakfast, parking, champagne & chocolates. The room was excellent and had every comfort that you could wish for, a great bed and a flat screen television. Bathroom was excellent with plenty of marble, large bath, separate shower enclosure with choice of shower heads (overhead forest or normal on the wall).
Pre dinner drinks and canape's in the club room were very enjoyable and plentiful.
Buffet breakfast provided a wide choice of hot and cold dishes with chefs to cook eggs etc to your liking.

Now for the little items that that could have been better...staff attitude was never really friendly or helpful either on the phone prior or during the stay. Our package included complimentary bottles of water and newspaper & neither were provided without having to call housekeeping (twice for the water).
Dead moth on bathroom floor.
We requested a glass of orange juice at drinks at the club lounge only be told that it was not available as breakfast was not served in the lounge over Xmas/ New Year period. Five minutes later we saw another guest drinking orange juice.

Whilst these are little things, I believe that for this top class hotel which is charging top dollar these incidents should not happen.

But overall it was still enjoyable .

Hilton Adelaide - STILL THE BEST!

from vissi87
Me and a few friends booked a last minute room for New Years Eve 2006. We chose to stay at the Adelaide Hilton as our plans to attend the Sydney New Years celebrations had unfortunately fallen through. We were extremely lucky to get one of the few remaining rooms as the hotel was mostly booked up. Check in was rather slow due to an unfortunate credit card situation which was eventually rectified and the receptionist was fairly professional (obviously she was exhausted after dealing with so many complaining guests all day seeing it was New Years).

Our room was on the 11th floor which has been recently refurbished with trendy new furnitire, plush carpet, huge pillows and a flatscreen LCD television.

The bathroom had a massive walk in shower with a rain showerhead aswell as a removable showerhead complete with pressure jets. Bathrobe, hairdryer and safe were also included in the basic room package.

Overall a fantastic stay. I will definately be returning to the Hitlon Adelaide sometime soon.

superb location

from JenaC
We have stayed here six times over the past 15 years. We keep coming back because the locale can't be beaten.
This time we stayed for 3 days. We always request a room overlooking the Square because we like the view of the Cathedral and the hills.
We have never had any problems with the quality or fitting of our rooms. Once they gave us a smoking room, but they moved us immediately when we demurred.
We discovered the food halls by the markets and ate there every day - terrific food at very reasonable prices!
We have also always found the staff friendly and helpful without being overly unctuous.

good base for business or holiday

from lettzz
Second visit to this hotel in June 2006.

Staff very efficient and friendly, rooms clean, airy and with windows that open.

Hotel is well situated being 10 minutes by cab from the airport, five minutes walk to Rundle Mall, right next door to the Central Market, and two minutes to the main restaurant street.

This is a good base for business, business centre facilities very good, meeting room facilities also good.

Restaurants all very good, fantastic breakfast selection in main restaurant.

Executive Floor Lounge breakfast not as good a selection, staff not as friendly as main restaurant staff - the only thing that lets the hotel down really.

Asked for a cup of coffee in the Executive Floor Lounge and if looks could kill I would be now popping up daisies.

Other than that one incedent, have spent a total of 10 days over the last two trips at the hoel and all other aspects were great.

Good location, bad smell

from UselessJRPass
I stayed here for one night for business only. All other quality hotels were booked out and this was the only one with a vacancy.

The location is a few minutes walk to the Centre of Adelaide, and handy to most things, though not as good as North Terrace hotels. A high floor gives a good view, although the windows seem quite small.
The rooms are reasonable, but not quite 5 star, about 4 stars in my opinion.

I booked a non smoking room, and confirmed this on check in. However, I was given a smoking room on a smoking floor, with quite a pungent odour. I have no doubt that the check in clerk did this deliberately, trying to fob me off with a poor smelly room, despite the fact that I booked an executive room and paid about $50 extra.

After some argument, I was reluctantly given a non smoking room, which was quite ordinary. The newspapers were not delivered to the room as ordered, and I was told that they'd run out and none would be delivered till later in the day. A clerk then turned up with a tattered, well used copy of the day's paper for which I was charged for on check out.

The restaraunt and breakfast were quite good, with good variety and friendly service.
The gym was quite good with very good equipment.
I wouldn't stay here again unless all other hotels were full, but if you can get a good deal, it may be worth a try.

City centre stay

from A TripAdvisor Member
This hotel is located right in the heart of the city and next to the famous Adelaide markets - a renowned epicurean haunt. The rooms are comfortable although not as modern and trendy as some of the other Hilton's. The hotel staff are very friendly. I ventured in to the restaurant for breakfast, the buffet spread was very nice. The lounge bar is very comfortable and offers great service and yummy snacks.
