Top Local Tips for Townsville
Billabong Sanctuary An astonishingly expensive waste of time. Small, smelly and run down. We weren't expecting Australia Zoo, though we had to question our expectations when the entry fee was the same as what we have paid to Australia Zoo!!! We were in and out in an hour, with young children!!! Even they couldn't be kep amused.. I'm talking about a 6 and 2 year old. Dull, dull, dull (and dusty).

I liked the way the reception area, the bar, the resturant and the pool/spa was in one open area. The open area also had a lot of palm trees (well, this is far north Queensland) with its own ecology system ( a possum was sighted by myself one night when I was there).
Other pluses that I liked and which worked for me included the external drycleaning service, the roomcleaning service, the free newspapers available for guests from the hotel reception, the hotel's close proximity to two large shopping centers and numerous food outlets such as Sizzler's, a takeaway noodle house and Macdonalds and the friendly nature of the staff there.
Some minuses apply though. The rooms are on two levels, and there is no elevator. This is bad luck for people placed on the upper floor if you have lots of luggage or are in a wheelchair. (You may be able to get a ground floor if you say in advance when reserving rooms that you are in a wheelchair. I have not checked on this bit, but it seems worth trying) Some of the ground floor units seem not to be very soundproof, though I was OK. However, my business associate reported being unable to sleep because of some noisy revelling neighbouring guests. Their toilet activities could also be apparently be heard in great unwanted detail. The hotel has some adult video channels which can readily be accessed by minors - there seems to be no safeguard against this.
Room service varies a bit - it took over two hours to get a meal delivered to me. However, a second order placed about a week later arrived promptly. So that was definitely a down followed by an up.
Would I go there again? Despite the minuses mentioned a minute ago, I think that I would.
