We recently spent five nights at the Peninsula Hotel In Port Douglas, and enjoyed it so much we did not want to leave. This is very much a hotel for quiet/romantic holidays for adults. It is not designed to cater for children. All the staff we met were friendly and helpful. James (the Manager) could not do enough for us. He even rang us in Tasmania to see if we would like to be picked up from Cairns airport. (This was included in the tarriff, he wasn't drumming up business.) I would especially like to commend the lady who waited on the breakfast tables. (I can't remember her name but it might have been Karen). The hotel is in an excellent location, within walking distance of everything and across the road from the beach. I can't think of anything negative to say about the Peninsula Hotel. It really is a great place to stay and it is so clean. I really have a thing about staying in Hotels because they always feel a little bit grubby. Not this one. The rooms are cleaned properly and regularly and it shows. The pools are cleaned each morning, and the area surrounding the pools is immacculate. Even the washing machines in the laundry are spotless. It isn't the cheapest hotel in town but in this case you get what you pay for. It isn't a large resort with 24 hour everything, it is exactly what it is held out to be. A luxury boutique hotel, and we highly recommend it.

Perfect honeymoon

We stayed at the Peninsula Hotel for our honeymoon and we had an excellent time. The staff of the hotel were very friendly and helpful. The hotel arranged for a limo pick up at the airport which was really nice. The driver was very friendly telling us all about the area. The location of the hotel was perfect. Right on the beach but very close to the Main Street of Port Douglas where all the shops and restaurants were - so you could walk into town very easily. Considering my husband likes to sleep in a very quiet area this place was perfect - as it is located in a quiet area. But in all honesty Port Douglas is a small quiet town to begin with so I can not imagine anyone having a problem with noise from the streets. The hotel was clean and room service was excellent. The only complaint I had was the phone charge to make a local call - we did not realize we were being charged per minute as compared to just a flat fee. But in all honesty that is the only complaint I had about this hotel. I highly recommend this place especially if you are going on a honeymoon!!!

service, forget the old reviews

Don't hesitate to stay at the Peninsula! We were - having reads negative reviews from 2004 on this site but we took the plunge and it was GREAT. Being quite well travelled and (unfortunately) quite discerning travellers, the Peninsula hotel delivered - matching the standards of some of the Luxury hotels of the world we have stayed at!! The value is very good.

Yes. The road may be in front of hotel but it is very quiet and the ocean front rooms are nice. The public beach (with AMPLE great beach!!!) is just ahead of the hotel. We checked out every 5-star hotel nearby and found we had a really great deal at Peninsula.

There is a sufficient kitchenette and the sounds of the ocean was much much louder than the sounds of the rare car passing. The breakfast was good enough - not fancy but good. Fancy would be having cheeses and cold cuts, but then there were eggs, ham, etc. The restaurant and the staff were wonderful...pricey and small portions but good. I would rather food be delicious and pricey than just pricey.
We had moved from the Thala Lodge where they promised coral sea view - only to find the views of the sea was nearly 1 km to the distance! We actually ended up paying less at the Peninsula and being (much) nearer to the sea and being central to all the restaurants in "town". We highly recommend Peninsula and no, we were not paid for this review by them!!! :)

Loved it!!!

This is a truly great small hotel located right on 4-mile beach and just a 5min walk to all the best bars and restaurants of Port Douglas.

Our room was great, spacious and well decorated with a seperate living area (complete with a small kitchen), a balcony overlooking 4-mile beach and a huge bath in a very nice modern bathroom.

When you're not diving the reef or trekking through the rainforest, the hotel pool and jacuzzi is a perfect place to chill out and relax over a beer or 2 and the hotel restaurant High Tide is also very good, well worth a hit.

Overall this hotel gets it spot on, but what really sets this place apart is the staff, they were all genuinely friendly and incredibly helpful.

We did not want to leave...defintely recommended.

Return trip, and just as great the second time

I stayed at the Peninsula for four nights as a solo traveler in November 2002, and returned with a friend in November 2004 for another four nights. When I was there as a solo guest, the staff was incredibly helpful and accommodating in setting me up with tours of the Daintree and the Great Barrier Reef and meal advice. They generally made me feel utterly welcome and at home (to the extent of setting a special table for me at breakfast, as they knew what time I came down and that I would be dining alone).

When I returned with a friend in November 2004, we were greeted with a special gift thanking me for returning to their hotel, an upgraded room, and more of the lovely service I had come to expect from my prior visit. The location is truly unbeatable -- across from an incredible beach, and a couple of blocks away from the main drag with all the bars and restaurants in Port Douglas. I have no quibbles whatsoever. This is not a true "luxury" hotel -- there's no spa, the rooms have tile floors (although they're spotless), and it doesn't feel so much "posh" as sleek, clean, friendly, and modern. It's worth the trip (even when the trip means flying via Honolulu and Guam, as New Yorkers must).

Not value for money

The 5 days we spent was overpriced bordering on a rip off. Small rooms (we changed once) the breakfast was a joke along the likes of Fawlty Towers, no room service, no in room bar, bad decor, uncomfortable sofas....shall I go on? The best thing about this hotel apart from the excellent bathroom was the cable TV that you could almost watch from the bed.
The front desk staff all seem the type who were friends and not professionals and somewhat indifferent and gave a most definitely 2 star service. The itinerant room people were nice however.
We would strongly recommend people to spend that amount of money- or maybe just a bit more- and stay at a proper 4/5 star hotel.

Perfect Hotel - Perfect Staff

My girlfriend and I stayed 8 nights at the Peninsula in December 2004 and cannot beleive that anyone could be less than 100% happy with this hotel. the location is perfect at the end of the main street right in the beach - much better location than the Sheraton. The staff are quite possibly the best I have experienced anywhere in the World. The rooms are vast - the bathrooms exceptional. Would not hesitate to recommend this as a wonderful place to stay and enjoy POrt Douglas and its surroundings.

Good location, but disapointing, poor service, overpriced

from A TripAdvisor Member
My wife and I stayed in the Penninsula for four nights in November.
Whilst the location is good, most other aspects of the hotel are very disapointing and overpriced. The suites are small and not particularily well appointed, but the biggest ctiticism was the service - which is extremely poor for such a price. No room service, no in room bar, and the hotel "bar" ( in reality a serving area) seems to close at about 9:00.pm.The breakfast "buffet" is pathetic. On Wednesdays there is no service at all in the evening - no bar - no restaurant - it is not possible to get even a cup of coffee. We returned from dinner, at a very nice local restaurant. at 9:30pm to find the main door locked and everywhere in darkness. Reception staff were not particularly helpful and decidedly snooty. Having stayed in first class hotels all over the world this hotel is no better than a three star. There is more to running an exclusive hotel than calling yourself "boutique"and putting some fancy soap in the bathroom !

Hated the Peninsula!!!

If you can aford to stay here - dont.... stay at the Sheraton Mirage which is about the same price.

Very disapointed in most respects - a bit like a Butlins or Pontins camp. Rooms very uncomfortable with no carpets on the floors and uncomfortable cane furniture.

The hotel backs onto the beach yes, but there is a pretty major road between the hotel and the beach which is busy all day, 7 days a week.

Breakfast was shocking for such an expensive hotel. Burnt scrambled eggs, no choice, no pastries. About 8 tables for 34 rooms so didnt get a table nearly every day of our 8 night stay!

No room service, no in room bar and the pool was very small and unusable.

Sorry but a hotel costing this much should be much better.

Not worth the money.

My wife and I stayed 4 nights in July and having stayed in many hotels on many trips we found the Peninsula dissapointing . We paid the most we have ever paid for a hotel in Australia and we were expecting great things . The pool turned out to be small , sun beds , only 15-16 for 70 guests and the breakfast was one of the worst we have had (not much choice, very fatty bacon, no pastries, and also had to ask and wait for food to be replenished). We booked the a pool view suite and found it to be right by the sun beds and also over looked by walkways. We changed to a sea-view (which we paid extra for) which were not overlooked. We could not fault the rooms which were very nice if a bit on the small side. My wife and I have stayed at other hotels in Port Douglas which have been equally as good but half the price.

Top Local Tips for Port Douglas

A recommendation We were recommended to dine at the Yacht Club (near to the Marina) by one of the ladies who worked at our hotel. She said that the location is lovely, and the food very good and not expensive. We never actually made it there, but it might be worth passing on to other travelers!

Best restuarant in Port Douglas Best place for a great steak and other great food in Port Douglas. Check out the aquariums in the toilets.

Lady Douglas boat trip Really enjoyed this trip on a family run boat along the river - beware of sandflies though!
