Historical Traveller Reviews of By the Sea Port Douglas Hotel

Just a perfect accomodation!

from lovedownunder
My mom and me really enjoyed our stay at "by the sea" or formaly known as archipelago appartments.
The location is perfect, just a short stroll to the beach and also very close to the shops and restaurants on Macrossan Street.
The staff was very helpful and friendly!
The appartment was lovely, very clean and quiet.

We were so impressed with this hotel. There's been a recent change in management and Wendy and her team couldn't have been more helpful. The rooms are spacious, spottlessly clean and have a convinient cooking area. And it's 30 seconds to the gorgeous 4 mile beach. Perfect!

Excellent Location and Brilliant Value

from burnsy888
I was wary about booking this accomodation due to a few negative reviews I read on this site, but I am so glad I did. The apartments have been taken over by new management in the last couple of months and they have made many changes. The location is possibly the best in Port Douglas, 30 seconds walk to the beautiful 4 mile beach and a 5 minute stroll up to the main street. Our room was fairly large, nicely decorated with air con and a large balcony.
The attention to detail from the new owners is very impressive. There is wi-fi available, but if you don't have your own laptop they have several available for guests to borrow. They have pre-porgrammed the phones in the rooms so you can use cheap rate phone cards. Most places actually block their phones from doing this so they can charge you more. They have pre-paid mobiles available for guests should they wish to be contacted. Bike hire is available for a very reasonable rate. They provide deck chairs, loungers and boogie boards for guests to take to the beach and use, free of charge.
If you are expecting a 5 star boutiquie resort you are going to be disappointed. These apartments offer excellent value for money. The owners are very friendly and helpful, our only regret is that we couldn't stay for longer.

Great experience with Archipelago Studio Apartments

from albertson5
This property is under new management in 2009 and they went out of their way to make sure we had a great experience. My wife and i are on a 4 week holiday in Austrailia visiting many tourist locations. Archipelago Studio Apartments was a delightful stay. The managers gave great advice on how to best enjoy the area. We stayed for 3 days, snorkling at the barrier rief and then touring into the Daintree forrest.

Great Beach Holiday Locale

Fantastic stay at BY THE SEA PORT DOUGLAS !!!!!!
June 24,2009
Thanks to the attenative and personal treatment by the staff , Wendy and Cathy ,our trip was that much more enjoyable. The accommodations are very reasonably priced and a great value. The location is ideal for Port Douglas, 1 minute walk to the beach !!!!!Had a wonderful view of 4 mile beach and the Coral Sea ,although we weren't able to enjoy it much as we were always out and about enjoying the tours, reef, restaurants and other Port activities!!!!! The staff of Wendy and Cathy helped my wife and make all our bookings and had some great tips on getting the right deals and picking good local eateries. We would stay here again, absolutely !!!

Archipelago - Great Place

from jemmathetraveller
we have just spent 8 days at these apartments and had a fab stay. the new owners bought the place in may and have spent a lot of time and effort improving the facilities....great new bbq by the pool, wirless internet and a great travel desk etc etc

it is 20m from the beach and 2 mins to the bars and restaurants on macrossan st - best location in the port!! the price is v good too - from $65 per room per night

wendy and kathy really helped with all our trips and made our stay - the rooms are a good size with a decent balcony, large bathroom and a small, well stocked kitchen area.

For convenience, affordability, location and friendly owner and manager - you can't go past Archipelago - we have been coming for years and intend to keep on doing so.

A short stroll to the beach and the wireless internet is great!

from ThumpsandMolly
I was up on business and also took the family. The beach is really close so that and the pool took care of the kids. The shops and day spas took acre of the wife. The new wireless internet set up is fast so I was able to take care of work very easily and at great rates. The office girls were great for advice and knew Port backwards. They were doing lots of work on the place like new beds and the like possibly new owners?

Great Location and value for money

As a local to the area we have stayed at the Archipelago for years. You cannot beat the location. Port Douglas is all about the beach and Macrossan Street. Lots of accommodation is out of town and you need to get a bus or drive to town. At the Archipelago we park out car and wall to the beach and at night we wander down for dinner and leave the car behind. And the price is great. We will be back again.

Cheap, 30 ft to beach, 1 blk to main drag, kitchenette. VERY good value

Stayed 6 nights found via Wofit & booked via hotelclub. I suggest booking direct via the hotels website in future. Holiday apartments. I had a single: stove top, micro, frig, kitchen sink, satellite TV, shower, single bed. No internet (yet - see below). Payed $65 AUD (~$46 US TOTAL) per night (offseason)! 40 foot walk to four mile beach. Right on Maccrossan St which is where all shops/restaurants are. There's a Cole's grocery 3 blks away, marina is 5 min walk, dozens of restaurants w/in 5 blocks, all the tours you could need. New owners took over 4 days into my stay. Very nice, chatted w/ one for 10 minutes or so. Said they were adding internet the next week (early May '09) and were going to do some 'upgrades'. Since its a 'holiday apartment', when I was there there really wasn't a maid svc, just fresh towels each day. Small pool, in shade, but seemed typical of similar properties. Upper floors looked to have quite nice views. On ground floor expect usual tropical colleagues: tiny ants, the occasional gecko. Just like southern Florida! This is a place to stay if you're more interested in spending your time and money on the reef, on the beach, in the rainforest as opposed to a hotel room. High marks from me!
