Historical Traveller Reviews of Sydney Marriott Hotel
Great service, great location!
from A TripAdvisor MemberThe location was great for the few days we spent there - right on the edge of Hyde Park, really central and good for the shopping areas, and our room was on the 15th floor with a view over it!! Pretty spectacular - some great buildings and the Sydney Tower all in view from the BIG windows in the room.
The decor of the hotel generally was looking a little tired; some peeling wallpaper here and there in the corridor, but the lobby was fine and it was clean. Our room(a deluxe double, I think - one down from a junior suite) was large, clean and comfortable, the bed was good and firm. Great minibar, and we had a small kichen area with everything one would need (microwave too). Good size bathroom with a spa bath - all clean and tidy. In general, a good, large room with no particlarly outstanding features save the large windows - and the 15th floor view.
What really made this hotel for us though, was the staff. They bent over backwards to assist us, on one occaison we realised very late in the day (about 11pm!!)that we wanted to book a tour to the Blue Mountains the next day, and bearing in mind the bus was leaving at 7.00am this would be no easy feat for the concierge! But, sort it they did, and with a smile! Excellent trip as well, so top marks there. All the staff we spoke to were really friendly and helpful, offering advice for certain shops, places for good views, lunches, ferries, etc.
If we were to go back to Sydney - as we hope to - we'd have no hesitation to book at Hyde Park again, just make sure you keep the staff happy, Marriott! They are an asset to you.
Clean, Spacious, Comfortable and Friendly Staff
from AussieAnnExcellent hotel
from keithreddyThe room was superb, nothing was worn, housekeeping was imaculate and service in every aspect was superb.
When added to the fact that we booked at a great rate through Hotels and still got a great room with a view of the park.
No worries bruce!
Very ordinary hotel
from MillefleursThe staff were generally friendly and helpful, and I had good assistance from the concierge desk.
The standard of the decor and the level of luxury "add-ons" in the room was quite ordinary. One benefit of the room was the basic kitchenette facilities, which allowed for basic food preparation. The glasses in the bathroom and the cups in the kitchen cupboard were not 100% clean.
The lobby is large and colourless, the bar and restaurant areas lack character. It is kinda dreary. It may suit business travellers better than holiday makers.
This hotel claims to be 4/4.5 star, but I did not think it reached that level. I did not think I got great value for money.
Enjoyed my stay at Sydney Marriott!
from Liverbird1We had a large room overlooking Hyde Park, which contained everything we needed for our stay, the toaster, microwave and other cooking utensils were also very handy to have, and the huge bathtub was also greatly appreciated.
The food I found to be excellent and the room service ordered was also very good too.
The real bonus of this hotel is the roof top pool, although a bit small it offers nice city views and is nice to use on a sunny day. The added Jacuzzi, steam room, sauna and mini-gym were also great and very relaxing.
I feel the hotel previous criticisms are rather harsh, and this is all in all a good hotel from which to explore Sydney.
My only criticism was the hotel bar Archibalds and the restaurant. Don't get me wrong the food and drink are fine, no problems there, it's just the general ambience of the bar and restaurant was rather stuffy. Archibalds bar does need livening up a bit, I found it quite depressing, and when you are on holiday you want to feel a bit jolly but it was often like a morgue in there, it sent me to sleep, they should at least play some lively happy music, perhaps then it wouldn't be as deserted as it often was.
Also one of the head waiters in the hotel restaurant needs to chill out a bit, the waiters were all very pleasant and we decided to ask one of them for advice on where would be good to go that evening, I did not appreciate this head waiter then taking this poor man aside and telling him off for talking to us, we could hear everything he was saying and we called him a little hitler after that night, what a pathetic little man!
Apart from that though, this is a good hotel for facilities, location and general service.

Public transportation Take the Sydney explorer bus to get your bearings. A pass is good for the entire day, and will get you to all of the important sights, with excellent commentary along the way. We also used public busses, and found them to be easy and friendly to use. Take the local bus to Bondi beach (locals will tell you which bus to take) - don't pay for the cost of more expensive transportation (or even a tour to get there).
Sydney Pass - Fantastic The Sydney Pass is the best way to see alot of the city. I got a 3 day Sydney Pass (they also have 5 and 7 days) for $110. The pass basically lets you travel unlimited times on buses, trains and ferries and 1 trip to and from the airport. It also inludes ulimited travel on the Sydney Explorer and Bondi Explorer which are great to see all of Syndey's famous icons. You can get on and off at any stop you like and then just catch the next bus. The Syndey Explorer takes in all the city sights with a bus going past each stop every 20 mins. The Bondi Explorer takes you to all the beaches at 30 minute intervals for each stop. The explorer buses are great as they take you directly to all the landmarks without having to try and figure out the public transort system and where to go - although you also have unlimited public transport use if you want to work it out yourself. The Explorer buses are clean, airconditioned and there's a running commentary on each area as you pass it. Get a Sydney pass!!
Australia's own football game. If it is on go and see a Sydney Swans football game at the SCG - a lot of fun (but maybe a bit confusing).
