Excellent hotel

I stayed at the Sir Stamford in early March. Check in was easy and the staff were very helpful and efficient just what was needed after a long flight from the UK.
The room was large, clean, nicely decorated and well furnished with a very large bathroom. I had a nice balcony which overlooked the start of the Harbour Bridge. There was plenty of storage and cupboard space which I liked particularly as I was there for nearly a fortnight. In addition to this the safe was big enough to store a laptop which is a rarity in most hotels.
Breakfast was good but not really much variation so it became a bit boring after a while. The hotel has a good bar and serves good food in the evening.
As for the location it couldn't be better situated. The Opera House is a 2 minute walk away, the Royal Botanical Gardens are opposite, Circular Quay and the rocks are just outside your day.
Fantastic hotel would definitely stay there again.

Without knowing Sydney or this hotel, I booked because of the location - which is perfect. A short walk took us to the Opera House, which we could see from our small balcony, and to the Royal Botanic Garden, which we could see across the street. Its a less than 10-minute walk to the other end of the Circular Quay and a few minutes more to the Rocks. And it is a pleasant place to return to after a long day out. In spite of being located next to a busy motorway, our room was very quiet when we could bring ourselves to close the balcony doors and shut the triple drapes. (We were on the 9th floor; lower floors might be noisier.) All requests for service were met with "of course" responses and were tended to very quickly. Our room was an upgrade from what we had booked online and was spacious and well-appointed. This is not the sleek modern accommodation many Americans seek abroad, but that adds to its appeal. I'd recommend it. (We were an elderly mom and two daughters travelling. Did not see kids in the hotel, so I can't speak to the child-friendliness.)

After staying in Menzies the first couple of nights on arrival to Australia- we decided to book somewhere nicer for 2 nights before departure. Our room was beutiful- outstanding location just opposite Circular Quay, excellent view from the windows, bathrobes in the room, and beautiful bathroom. We have really loved our stay, would recommend this hotel to anybody who visits Sydney.

We stayed in room 703. It had a small balcony with partial harbour/bridge view. You can watch the ferries come and go. Very comfortable bed, quiet room, and the bathroom is so luxurious! We booked directly using Stamford's site and received their anniversary special for $199, Friday nights, which included $40 to spend at the bar. Week nights it's $249 which includes breakfast. All prices AUD and there really isn't any taxes or other charges added later - a treat for us Canadians! It's a short walk from the Circular Quay train station, although it is uphill. The Botanical Gardens and Opera House are also a short walk. One thing - they would not let us in our room early, but they did take care of our luggage so that we could sightsee. We loved staying here - We loved Sydney, it's a beautiful clean and safe harbour! Highly recommend this hotel.

After reading mixed reviews on this site, I had some concerns about booking the Sir Stamford however I did and was amazed at how wonderful it was. I felt as though I was at an English country estate. The guest rooms were extremely large and comfortable, the bathrooms were luxurious, the dining room was excellent and the service was fantastic. The location had to be one of the best in Sydney-right up the street from the opera house and a block away from Circular Quay. I will definately return since it was one of the best hotels I have stayed at. In addition, the hotel's web site has some very competitive prices on the rooms.
Elegant and refined

I stayed at the hotel in early October on the 8th floor. It is a hotel with great ambience and and an olde world feel.
The decoration in the public areas is rich and sumptuous. The bar and restaurant were very enjoyable places to be with exceptional staff. I felt 'at home' right away.
The room was a good size for an 'ordinary' room in a sydney hotel. It had an air of fading grandeur. The marble bathroom was luxurious, but no separate shower.
I had a glitch checking in when I was put in a room with sealed windows, but was moved immediately I contacted reception.
Room service and housekeeping were excellent.
The new room had a loose window catch and problems with the air-conditioning. When I rang about it next morning the staff promised action "straight away", unfortunately this did not happen after 3 more calls. So I went out and left a personal letter for the Manager.
When I returned about 3 hours later all was fixed with a lovely bowl of fruit,mineral waters and a letter from the manager with complimentary access to the Club Floor for my stay. She also rang me personally to check all was ok.
Apart from this glitch my stay was superb. I do get the impression that more staff could be used, but everyone was very friendly and helpful. Service without snobbery or grovelling.It was just the perfect tone.
The breakfast in the Dining Room was very nice and the bar is just a fantastic place to be.
I have looked and looked (and sampled)for the right place to stay when in Sydney and at last I have found it.

Not Quite 5 Star

Good location, nice small hotel that could be very good; however, service from the front desk is appalling. We had a nice large room but the carpet was old with a very large offensive and promient spot. Repeated requests (every day for four days) to clean were ignored ... definitely not 5 star service. On checkout the bill had food and bar charges that were not ours, after we waited for front staff to review receipts they discovered that they had charged the wrong room. No apology just an impatient arrogance that they had to go through the receipts. Restaurant and concierge service was excellent and the sitting room with fireplace is very cozy and appealing.

This hotel impressed from the start with extremely helpful front door staff.
Room was superbly furnished, and the hotel has a real personal touch with lots of french antiques/reproductions.
Room (409) was fantastic, big and spacious, with a bathroom which was even more impressive than my other fav. hotel, the Canberra Hyatt.
The dining room is fabulous for breakfast. A four minute walk to Circular Quay. Great price, Great location Great atmosphere.

Premium value at a reasonable price

(January/ 05) Thoroughly impressed with this hotel all the way around. Service was excellent and ammenities rivaled any world-class hotel. And all for a very reasonable price. We've paid more to stay at other Sydney hotels and had a far less-impressive experience. Loved the quaint feel of this smaller-sized hotel and found the staff exceptionally friendly and helpful.
Top Local Tips for Sydney
weekly travel ticket Don't necessarily buy the Sydney Explorer ticket if you want to cut cost. We bought the weekly train/bus/ferry ticket which was much cheaper and allows you to use the corporation ferries/ buses and trains in different zones. You are still able to visit most places with the ticket ie. Manly, Darling Harbour, Olympic Park, Bondi etc You can buy the tickets at the airport train station when you arrive or in the city stations.
Incredible dining experiences The Pier at Rosebay is a stunning contemporay view seafood restaurant and setting. The food was simply outstanding. Service was a bit cool and nervous. No jollies there. Cafe Sydney in the old Custom House has amazing contemporay interior design providing a smashing view of the Sydney Harbour bridge. Check to make sure you are going to get a Prime table first. Food deliciouos, service efficient. But it suffers a bit from its success. Staff cool. A place for a memorable view, but not a place to dine where you feel you are special!
Sydney Pass Sydney Pass seems expensive(we paid $125 for 5 days) but it is worth it. Travel on all buses, ferries and most trains is included. It also includes two bus tours (the Sydney Explorer and the Bondi Explorer) and three harbor tours which are worth doing. If you like being on the water the ferry system is extensive and goes to many of the tourist attractions - the Zoo, the Aquarium. The Nautical Museum across from the Aquarium is also worth seeing and it's free.

We did have a few problems with The Dining Room being full for breakfast as it was the weekend but we were taken to a club lounge floor which we thoroughly enjoyed.
We got a good rate by booking on the hotels website although we would not have chosen to stay anywhere else as the Stamford was a recomendation from family.
