Well worth a visit
from A TripAdvisor MemberAll facilities open on return c. 06/01/05 and enjoyed a swim & jacuzzi on the roof. Service excellent; location ideal if one has only a limited time in SY because prime sites are on the doorstep and just behind the hotel is a comprehensive if a tad touristy but comprehensive market for those presents that one has to get for mother before setting off back home.
Reception very competent, luggage chaps very helpfull given restrited vehicular access to hotel entrance and the young fellow running the bar in the lobby a credit to the etablishment. Taxi to SY Int c. AU$30 half an hour but that was on a Saturday morning; perhaps 15 minutes extra when running against the rush hour traffic week days.
Holiday Inn - they really should change their name because this is a hotel giving good quality in an ideal location for short stay visitors; perhaps UK standards reflect upon the the title in Australia for UK peeps.
Do recall sticky floor at breakfast but even being 1st there (early start 07:00) could not fault menu, plates or cutlery etc. Perhaps previous correspondent was there on an off day. Can't comment on restaraunt as we utilised the excellent restaurants and bars in the locality.

from A TripAdvisor MemberExcellent location
from A TripAdvisor MemberViews from the rooftop pool area were superb.
Our room was clean and pleasant.
However, the service at breakfast was poor (no plates, bowls, messy service area and sticky floor!)
We were also unlucky as we arrived to find that the shop below the first floor was being (very noisily) renovated and were allocated room 101 above the shop - the noise and vibration of the drilling was incredible! We refused the room and they gave us another on the third floor - this too was very noisy as it overlooked bins (emptied daily) and a restaurant.
Overall this is a good choice of hotel if you manage to get a quiet room!
LOVED the Old Sydney Holiday Inn
from Leonorewve soundproofed!
from gasmanWe booked two rooms for four nights, and were given two interconnecting rooms as requested on the first floor overlooking George St. We were aware of some noise on the first (Thursday) night, but it didn't really bother us. The following night (Friday) was unbearable though, like being on the starting line of the Indy 500. We couldn't be moved as the hotel was full. They did give us earplugs! Didn't quieten down until 2am.
The following day management transferred us to the Sydney Intercontinental - a far more upmarket hotel, but not quite as good a location and a ridiculously overpriced breakfast. We'll return to the Old Sydney Holiday Inn in the future, but will inquire about the soundproofing first (which apparently they are in the the process of doing something about)
Quality Hotel in quality location
from A TripAdvisor MemberUpon checking in found the staff very helpful, extremely courteous and friendly and nothing was too mjuch of a problem for them.
The Executive room i had was spacious with a good view of the Harbour Bridge.
Best views of Cicrular Quay can be found by going upto the rooftop pool. It is breath-taking.
the bar inside the hotel is ok whilst small and the range of berverages extensive.
I would have no problem recommending this hotel to anybody as i will stay here again the next time i visit Sydney.
Fantastic Location, First Rate Staff!
from A TripAdvisor MemberThough this hotel does not have a gym, the do have an agreement with another hotel in the area , which allows you to purchase day passes to a gym in the city.
Our room had a spectacular view of the Opera House and the Bridge, which brings me to the ONLY negative of our experience. A very high level of street noise, that even double glass and ear plugs couldn't overcome entirely. Though the walls are very thick and we had absolutely no "hotel noise', there was a fair amount of honking and street rowdiness. If you are a light sleeper I would request a room in the back, I think you would be fine. I loved this hotel and for us, waking up in the morning and seeing the Opera House outside of the window was a fantastic thrill!
Loved this hotel
from atcer28We were given an upgrade to an executive room on arrival. When we realised it was a smoking room staff were very helpful offering to change the room or send up an air purifier. The room was great with a nice wooden blinds and black out blinds although the bathroom was a little small. The TV was huge.
The rooftop pool has great views of the harbour. The pool and spa were good. The breakfast in the morning was good value for money. The bar is also good with good value food and drinks and a very helpful barman.
I would definately stay here again.
great for first-time visitors to Sydney
from radio71Awesome Accomodation and Location
from A TripAdvisor MemberThe views from the rooftop pool are almost as good as the location, with views of the Harbor Bridge, and the Opera House you may not want to leave the hotel at all!
I give it all of 3 1/2 stars!
Top Local Tips for Sydney
Harbour Cruise Captain Cook Cruise MV2000 - Enjoy Sydney harbour by night on this lovely cruise. Different levels and prices available. For something romantic or to celebrate a special occasion the "Degustation dinner cruise" which includes unlimited beer wine and soft drink is fantastic. We have done this cruise twice (Oct 2006 and Feb 2007). There was music entertainment included - as well as a dance floor.
Purchase the Day Tripper Pass Use the public transportation to get around Sydney -- bus/ferry/train works great and you can get a day pass for $15.00 AUS that lets you travel to all locations
PLENTY OF THINGS TO DO AND SEE WITH THE HOTEL BEING CENTRAL, WE WOULD RECOMMEND USING THE FERRYS, AND BUSES TO GET AROUND, NO NEED FOR TAXIS, THAT WAS THE NICE THING ABOUT THE ROCKS AREA,
