Top Local Tips for Sydney
Manly Walkway This is a tough, but worthwhile, walk from Manly to the Spit. You get to see Sydney from so many perspectives. Be aware that once you get to the Spit, it is not obvious how you get back to the city centre!
shuttle bus from Sydney airport When arriving in Sydney, book yourself on one of their hotel shuttles. You tell the driver your hotel and they'll stop you right on the doorstep. They also pick you up if you call them 24 hours in advance. I can't remember the return fare but it was really reasonable.
Don't miss the Fish Market! If you're a seafood lover, there's no better place than the Sydney Fish Market - no frills; just basic, great quality and value fish and shellfish. Lunch here will set you up for the rest of the day, and won't break the budget.

A recent stay shows why the prices are high - the hotel room I was in was quite luxurious, with a mini-bar, shampoo, ironing facilities, air conditioning etc. All in all, the rooms (at least the one that I was in) and the corridors are reminiscent of a 4-5 star hotel. The tariff includes breakfast, served in its pleasant first-floor restaurant.
Whilst the facilities in the room are very 20th/21st century, the means of ingress and egress are very 1840s. Because the hotel is a historical building (established 1841) , there is no elevator. This is rather unfortunate, given that the reception (nice as it is) is on the second floor. This means a lot of climbing on steep stairs though I understand bar staff are available to assist people with heavy luggage and the infirm. This situation with the stairs may explain its 1-star rating.
This hotel also brews its own beer, and I couldn't resist trying out some of its Quayle Ale. Not a bad drop, really. It was a bit sweet but that didn't bother me. The ground floor bar was doing good business when I was there, but unfortunately the crowds can be an additional obstacle to someone with lots of luggage who has just arrived.
Getting to the hotel by public transport is done by taking the 431, 432, 433 or 434 bus to its Millers Point terminus. The hotel is a short walk from there.
