Historical Traveller Reviews of Kirketon Hotel
Excellent for $145 per night
from chefspopWhat a disappointment!
from A TripAdvisor Memberideal for a basic getaway
from A TripAdvisor MemberIt doesn't have all the extra facilities of the upmarket hotels (ie: no room service over xmas - new year!!?), and no restaurant in service for now. It does offer excellent value, and sometimes professional service. Make the most of the surrounding cafes etc.
Amazing boutique hotel
from rooster73Great Value
from MelbourneguyHaving visited Sydney more times than I can count and stayed in all manner of hotels with varied star ratings, I can honestly say I liked the Kirketon very much.
I had a Standard Room and yes it was small but stylish nonethless. The bathroom was particularly interesting with creative lighting. Having a cd player, video and walk in wardrobe was also nice.
Lobby is small and the bar and restaurant are currently closed which is no bother cause you are in Sydney's best dining precinct.
Staff were fantastic. Friendly and well informed.
For what they are charging you cannot beat it.
Friendly service in the middle of the city

from babsoramaA certain style
from daPollI spent five nights at the Kirketon in July, and was wrapped in finding this urban oasis and all that surrounded it.
Tucked away on busy Darlinghurst Road, it has an unobtrusive frontage making it difficult for the cabbies to find, yet it never seemed overly noisy.
The bathroom was extraordinary, both in size and fittings. The soaps are specially made, and exquisitely perfumed. To say it only had a shower is like saying the pyramids are only tombs!
The bed was very comfortable, although a chair would have been a nice addition, and perhaps some brighter lighting to read by at night, but then in Sydney, who wants to stay in at night? A TV with cable and remote, and a wonderful sound system (bring your CDs) made the room that much nicer to spend any time in. If you want a kettle, you may have to ask for it as not all rooms are equipped.
The hotel is surrounded by cafes and restaurants, which was just as well as the house restaurant was being refurbished. My choice for breakfast, lunch and dinner would have to be bill's, just five minutes walk away. And down the street is a friendly little pub perfect for that evening nightcap.
For a day's shopping you can't beat Oxford Street, ten minutes walk to the west, with its eclectic range of bookshops, clothes and music. Or head down the hill along William Street to the city centre, an easy 15 minute amble. Want to walk on the wild side? King's Cross is just a two minute stroll up the street. Try the Bourbon Bar near the El Alamein Fountain for dinner and a $10 steak meal to die for.
Be aware there is no lift at the Kirketon- those bags have to be humped up the stairs! The staff were willing to assist though - in fact, the staff were very helpful with any request, and had intimate local knowledge. Taxis were plentiful, but even so a booking was made for me for an early morning departure when the front desk would have been unmanned.
All in all, this place is a gem for the price, a perfect base from which to explore Sydney. I'll certainly be staying there again.
We loved the Kirketon... it was fantastic
from JandJDCWe're indebted to Adrian for allowing us to check in immediately after our flight from the States (at 9 AM!), which was extremely appreciated. (Their staff even lugged our four huge bags up the stairs while we were out for breakfast, much to our surprise...)
The hotel's design is very sleek and hip throughout, which we found refreshing. The location is great, within easy walking distance of lots of wonderful neighborhoods.
I'm sort of baffled by some of the other reviews... Not only did we get daily maid service (and we were in a standard room), they even gave us add'l Aveda products (the mint shampoo is brilliant!) when we had mentioned how much we enjoyed them.
Overall, we highly recommend it, for a hip place with great stay to stay in a cool neighborhood...
friendly
from RosalieSydneyGorgeous intimate hotel where the staff are sublime in chararcter and always prepared to help with a smile. My husband and I stayed for three nights and on each night we asked to upgrade however the hotel is apparantly always full so be prepared and the book the room type you want early. The hotel's rates are very reasonable which is why we booked and I assume why the hotel would be in such high demand.
Top Local Tips for Sydney
Best breakfast in the world. Five mins from The Kirketon is UNA's - the greatest breakfast you'll ever eat. The only meal you'll need all day!
Take a ferry to Watson Bay for fish & chips with beer The desk clerk at one hotel recommended this to me. I went, had a great time, enjoyed my fish & chips with a couple beers. Only problem was that I ate it at Doyles right there when you get off the boat, and the bill came to $60. I wasn't really expecting that!! But I didn't do that often so it made for a really nice afternoon. Oh, and they close at 3pm from lunch and reopen at 5pm for dinner.
Food Try the cafe around the corner I think it's called 'Eat & Drink'. The breakfast was nice and the building is by Dale Jones Evans, pretty cool.
