Historical Traveller Reviews of Novotel Sydney On Darling Harbour Hotel

Great place to stay but eat elsewhere

from Ynca
We enjoyed our stay in the Novotel, with helpful reception and housekeeping staff, clean and comfortable rooms with lovely modern decor, and a very convenient location.

There is supposed to be internet access via the TV, but at a ridiculous price, so we didn't bother. We complained to the hotel and to be fair, they wrote to us and said they were addressing the cost issue.

We only ate breakfast there and it wasn't great - standard sloppy buffet fare, terrible tea and coffee, and serving staff who seemed half asleep (long waits for extra cutlery, etc., slow table assignment despite there being lots of free tables, etc.)

The location is fantastic though, and since there are plenty of places to eat nearby, it isn't a huge factor, especially if you book a room without breakfast and don't need the expensive internet facilities.

Average hotel

We didn't manage to check into our room until 11am having arrived from Europe with a one night's stopover in Singapore at 5.10am. From 7 - 10am we walked around Darling Harbour feeling pretty tired and cold as it was only 8 degrees.

The room was comfortable, clean and modern, if rather small by the time we had an extra bed for my daughter. We only had a room at the back of the hotel which wasn't very exciting. The downside, I thought, was the reception, which was rather dull and dark. The breakfast room reminded me of a cafe with no table cloths. The tea was often cold but the breakfast otherwise was good.

The hotel is well situated in Darling Harbour but I would have preferred to be on the other side of the Bridge nearer town.

Great

Stayed here in June whilst visiting family in the city. I thought it was great - very nice rooms - small but really well appointed - the staff were excellent and even found a jacket for my husband to borrow whilst we were there. Great buffet breakfast with a discount for guests and their guests of $15. Perfect location - couldn't fault this great hotel.

Too expensive

from travellerJack
Location is very good for Darling Harbour and the conference center, although I would prefer to be closer to the city. Darling Harbour is a small area and everything is within walking distance.

The hotel is very non-descript, feels like a cruise ship. Way too big to be personal.

Room (Darling view queen) was spacious and clean. Large towels, but water pressure not sufficient. TV had 6-7 channels, mostly sports, no CNN.

Everything here is overpriced. Breakfast at 26 AUD not worth the money; internet 27.50 per day; bottle of minibar water 7.

Concierge service friendly and knowledgable.

As a local (five years in Sydney) it is still fun to be a tourist in your own city. Therefore my friend and i set off for one of our weekend experiences, to where else but Darling Harbour. We found a great rate on the "net" after a bit of searching. There are a whole range of hotels in this area but the Novotel at $199 looked great compared to the averages in Trip Advisor, and we had read that it had been done up recently

We checked in on a Friday after work, the bar was buzzing so we stopped for a quick cosmopolitan and dropped the bags in the room, the concierge was very helpful when asking where to go for dinner reccommended three different resstaurants Nicks, Jordans and a new one Icecube (as we were looking for seafood). We tired Icecube, five minute walk great views of the harbour. Fairly quiet but it started filling up after our meal. We shared a seafood platter $100 aprox and a nice sauvingnon blanc and the service and food was terrific.

We checked out another bar Cargo which was fun and then headed back to the hotel, the rooms are lovely, brand new spacious and ours had been upgraded to a view rooms "Bargain". Waking up to the darlign harbour view in the morning is spectacular. we had chosen a sleep in and room serivce, which was delivered on time, hot and with a smiling staff member.

We visited the Gym after brekkie, then explored Darling Harbour from the Monorail stopping in China Town, checking out the markets and then a harbour cruise for afternoone tea (cheaper than doing the lunch one) it was fun.

We opted for an early dinner in the hotel (seafood buffet oops) but it was really lovely and cant fault the service, a big restaurant and a big hotel but all staff we came across were great. Taking advantage of the room we enjoyed movies on the plasma and all in all a very relaxing night. Sunday morning we asked for late check out, and slept in til 10 then did the breakfast buffet which at $26 with espresso coffee was a great deal. For two nights, driink from both basr and min bar, room service brekafast and buffet breakfast, dinner out one night and in the other and movies the whole weekend splurge cost us $750 money well spent to escape the stresses of daily life.1s

Better than your average tourist hotel

from AnneB32
I had mixed feelings about staying here after reading the reviews so was presently surprised when I opened the door to the hotel room.

The room was reasonably big, clean and well furnished with 2 beds, a sofa, a nice modern desk and chair and plasma tv. The bathroom was also reasonably big but spotlessly clean and modern.

The other advantage of the hotel is the location - you are right next to Darling Harbour so getting around Sydney is easy.

On the downside it's about as impersonal a hotel experience as you can get. The hotel is massive and it feels very much like a production line at check-in and checkout and is generally quite a dark hotel at reception and in the corridors. For a few days stay however it was great.

t love it

from secondtimelucky
The Novotel has a great location and the rooms are spacious, with flat screen TV, internet connection and lovely bathroom.

HOWEVER, the walls are paper-thin and we were constantly awoken by people coming in from nights out or children running in the hallway.

Attention to detail also was not great. We stayed on the weekend and were awoken by the previous guest's alarm clock setting. This should be automatically turned off by cleaning staff. No personal care kit (cotton buds, nail file, etc). No instructions on how to use TV and limited video range.

Staff were lovely and very willing to help/answer any questions. View was lovely (we booked a harbourside view) and hotel is very close to the action but we would not stay again due to noise.

Lovely hotel with a great location

We stayed here from 16th July 05 to 20th July 05 as part of our round the world honeymoon.

What a great hotel with a fantastic location. It was only a 5-10 min walk to the harbour, where you can catch a ferry to the Opera House etc.

There are some great restaurants located in and around Darling Harbour. The monorail also stops just outside the hotel which is handy if you want to go into the city.

We stayed on a bed & breakfast basis and I would definately recommend the buffet style breakfast it was great value for money and really set you up for a hard days sightseeing.

One thing I would say you must do when in Sydney, is climb the Harbour bridge, its amazing and the views out of this world.

If we are ever fortunate enough to be back in Sydney, we would definately stay in the novotel Darling Harbour again.

Great views

Stayed at the Novotel for a couple of days in August. It is a very big hotel and consequently is a little impersonal. We arrived early at 8 am from our flight from the UK but were able to check, although they could not give us the room we wanted - we had originally booked a double but were given a twin queen room. Room was fine, beds were very confortable although we did hear a bit of the noise experienced by another poster but not enough to warrant a complaint. Darling harbour is very scenic especially at night but I found the shops around it quite tacky. It is a tourist area so this is to be expected, I suppose. Overall it was a positive experience but I probably would not stay there again as it was quite expensive.

What a great spot, everything at your doorstep

from AlanDHonkers
Back in Sydney over the weekend before flying back to HK so decided to stay in Darling Harbour rather than be stuck in the city centre. DH is where all the al fresco waterfront restaurants and bars are and there is always lots of events or entertainment happening. Indulged us a bit and opted for a Harbour View room for $295 but well worth it to wake up to the sun and a beautiful outlook. A big hotel (500+) rooms but very helpful staff (was surprised at the comments of other TA's) and terrific little business centre; high speed internet and wireless too which is a real plus. The seafood buffet on the Saturday night was great value and we hoed into a ton of smoked salmon, oysters and crab – all you could eat. Finished off with coffee in the lounge bar (called Liquid…one day hotels will get a bit more creative with their outlet names!) which had a terrace overlooking the harbour and city. Sunday spent pottering around the shops in DH and there was live jazz on all day. All in all a very pleasant way to weekend in Sydney.

Top Local Tips for Pyrmont

Convenience store Back onto the road from the Novotel Darling Harbour is a convenience store and around the corner is a supermarket. these are things that are very helpful for people who don't want to pay for room service all the time.

Bondi Beach We went to manly beach, everone raved about it but we def preffered Bondi. Check out both and see which you like best, they are very different.

Public Transport Don't take a car, public transport is the only option here.
