Absolutely Disgusting

Disappointment would actually be less effective expression to use.
I was in Canberra last week for my Research thesis; I booked Rydges as I had a very good impression of them. My parents had stayed at Rydges in New Zealand some time back and they had a brilliant review.

I stayed there for one night and to my amusement, I saw dirty toilet, smelly too and a cockroach on the wall. On exiting the parking, a huge truck had blocked my way and I had to get them to move, actually got late for a meeting by 15 mins.

Additionally on confronting the front desk, all they could offer is a little "SORRY".

All I know is not just me; anyone from my family isn't booking with Rydges anymore. They have really let me down. Where are the days gone when customers were treated like customers? At least they need to be careful about Hygiene.

I stayed at Rydges Lakeside for a conference and found the experience to be horrendous. The lobby of the hotel is dated but nice. Upon checking in, I encounted possibly the rudest person I have met in a customer service position. The entire time she behaved as though she was beneath providing any sort of adequate customer service. The room's decor was dated and the furniture stained and scratched. It had a very peculiar odour, to such an extent I slept in quite cold Canberra weather with the balcony door open all night. The bathroom was not at all what I would consider clean. There was mould on the tiles and grout missing. The shower curtain was mouldy and visibly dirty. When I called room service they sent a man up with a new one who was laughing and said that he had another shower curtain to replace the one I didn't like. I didn't find it amusing and when I showed him the filthy curtain, he shrugged and did not make any apology. There were 3 positives to the trip: the first was that I went home, the second was that I have told everyone I know about my experience and the third was that the meals from room service were nice. I do not recommend anyone stay here.

s ok but not that big of a deal

This place is ok but I wouldn't go for the view. We stayed for 3 nights in a Queen Lakeside View but the only view of the lake was from the TV side of the room or the balcony. I'm glad I researched for a good price because I wouldn't pay the normal room rate for such a poor room. The worst part about the place wasn't the age as others have said but the fact that the room next to our's, was joined to our's by a door between the rooms so you could hear all the noises from the next room. The service was good but I would have expected more from the Rydges as I have in the past from other Rydges I have stayed at, as the staff helped but not really alot. The other sad fact about the room was the shower. It went from hot to cold all the time. Other then this the room was ok. I wont be going back there nor recommening it to anyone.

Better than expected

Having read the other reviews in advance, my expectations were not great for this hotel. Sure, a lot of the points about the age of the hotel are valid, but overall I had a good stay here. Check-in/out was efficient. I was on the 8th floor looking over the park which is fine (seeing the lake is not a big deal for me). I thought the main room was fine and well-furnished. The bed was very comfortable, as already noted! Sure the bathroom looks tired, but it was clean and adequate. Nice to have a balcony, and the location was good (about 10 mins walk to the main shopping area). I'm glad that I arrived early in the afternoon, because the free car park at the rear was full later on (you can park below the hotel for $12, which is a bit steep I feel). Buffet breakfast pretty ordinary, but overall my stay was OK, and I would return.

The Best Sleep

My wife & I stayed in this hotel for 3 days for an in service work Conference which was held there. First the negative: it is an old motel, and as such has old motel issues. The air conditioning in the room was very poor and could not bring the room temperature down. We were fortunate in that it was winter. We opened the external door to cool the room down.

The lifts are a real worry. One time about 8 of us were stuck on the ground floor and the doors would not open. We could hear people talking outside so I said we must be close to the ground floor. I opened the doors manually by pulling on them and the lift was not aligned correctly with the floor level. Two ladies in the lift were quite scared. The rest of the time the lifts worked ok but I avoided that lift & used the other one.

The middle lift is out of action because it is being replaced.

The view wasn't what i had hoped, but I wasn't staying there for the view so that was neither here nor there.

On the positive side, the customer service was excellent, the girls were very helpful, the cleaners did an excellent job on the room.

The BEST thing about this motel is the beds, they are FANTASTIC! Very comfortable. I have just purchased a new bed myself, or I would have been tempted to purchase one of these.

The motel is situated in a GREAT location.

Unlike several other reviews I've read here I would stay here again.

Extremely disappointing

This hotel is very tired and shabby and is overdue for a good makeover. My experience was pretty appalling for a hotel that claims to be 4 star eg:

- While the room looked relatively clean, I put my hand on the cabinet and it was really sticky!! Yuk!

- When I emptied the bath, the water came flooding out of the floor waste and flooded the bathroom.

- The air-conditioning in my room didn't work.

I let the front desk know about these things and was told that the maintenance people had gone home. As I was only there for 2 nights I didn't want to bother shifting rooms.

As another contributer has noted, furniture was scratched and worn. The bathroom was a shocker, exposed glue on the sink where it had been reglued into the vanity. Odd tiles glued onto the bath.

One of the reception staff was not particularly friendly.

On the plus side, the hotel food was good. The room service breakfast was very good and the dinner was nice. I had a small view of the lake, but there's a building going up in front of the hotel which I suspect will block a lot of views.

I don't mind shabby places if low rates are charged and they don't claim to be 4 star hotels. Who provides the star rating for this hotel? It's misleading.

Renovation needed

The place is old, everything is yellow-looking. The wall, ceiling, bathroom... The TV has like 3 channels. The AC control is like a control nob from a 20's radio. Canberra the city is about to totally dry up.

Oh, one important thing. Another building was being built when I was there. So they no longer have "lake view". Even without the building, the "view" wasn't nice at all.

Service was OK.

Internet is convenient, but NOT FREE.

There's also a charge with local phone calls.

You get what you pay for but breakfast great!

We stayed here for two nights. We chose this hotel as it was the closest hotel to the Cirque du Soleil. We didn't want to spend a great deal of money on accommodation. In my view you get what you pay for so we weren't expecting a palace. Yes - to confirm other reviewers opinions, the room was tired looking and it was quite small. The bathroom also needed a good revamp but there was a bath which was a nice surprise.

On the positive side the queen bed was quite new and comfy and the linen fresh and modern. Breakfast was great value at $15 pp if you prebook. It tended to make up for the shortcomings to an extent.

I found the service generally to be fine.

I had no trouble sleeping the first night. However the second night I was kept awake on and off by the noisy mini fridge so not good if you are a light sleeper.

We used the indoor heated pool. The pool itself was fine about 12 metres long so adequate to swim a few strokes. We would have liked it to be a little warmer though. The pool's location was very drab though with no atmosphere or decor and we were glad to leave.

There is no point expecting a view of the lake due to the construction site opposite. They may need to rethink the name of the hotel as I can see this will result in a lot of complaints.

To sum up I certainly would not class this hotel as any higher than 3-3.5 star. I couldn't see us staying there again as next time I would rather spend a little more to get a little more.

There is construction that is currently underway across from the hotel which is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2007, the building in question will not be any higher than the floors that are in place so there is still a view of the Lake from the hotel.

I have been to a number of formal functions at this hotel and thought it was pretty good. Conversely, i attended a conference here and found it to be very ordinary.

Check-in for this stay was efficient, yet the service was impersonal and indifferent. I didn't see one smile at any time I was in the vicinity of the front desk.

We booked this night as a celebratory indulgence. We had a Queen Suite and found the rooms to be spacious and well furnished. The carpets and furniture all appeared to be clean. The bed was comfortable and the linens were clean and stylish.
The room was not what I would call well kept. The walls and doors were scuffed and chipped which I can forgive, but the cleaning job was not good. One bathroom was quite well cleaned but the second seemed to have been overlooked. There was hair on the shower step - more than one - and a dirty footprint. Obvious dirty hand marks on the walls had been overlooked and the mirror had not been cleaned. The sills were dusty especially behind the curtains when they were pulled back and the TV's needed more than a cursory wipe-over. The windows and balcony screens also needed a good going over.

We were supposed to have a room with lake views but being summer, the trees were holding their full canopy of leaves and obscured most of the lake. Unfortunately, our room overlooked a building site and a new partially constructed, multistorey apartment building which is certainly not the fault of the hotel. However, it would have been nice to be informed of this as we might have paid the extra for a room on the other side of the building with a better view. We liked our two balconies and the opening doors.

We had booked the seafood buffet as part of the deal and it was "run of the mill" but fresh and plentiful. The wine list was very pricy (we thought it pretty outrageous) and we decided instead to make do with the wine buffet. It was $17 per head for as much as you wished to drink from the selection of red and white wines offered. There were some very cheap wines but also some excellent ones included. We had the breakfast buffet the next morning which was also not remarkable, but the service was good and the food quite edible.

Other reviewers have discussed the internet service. I won't bore you with the details of that saga but suffice it to say that the internet is overpriced - the most expensive we have encountered - ineffcient and damned slow. We could have bought a wireles pack from the front desk but the price was astronomical.

I think it is about time that this hotel took notice of the reviews on this website and made an attempt to fix some of the things that seem to get up everyone's noses. Other Rydges hotels we have stayed in have been a lot better. Rydges Eaglehawk is out of town, but a better place to stay in my view. At least the room we stayed in there was refurbished and well cleaned.

Time for a shakeup

My son and I made a reservation for one night! We requested and received twin beds. Unfortunately, we also got a room with filthy carpetting. After a short discussion, we headed back downstairs to the check in counter. It was obvious from the reaction, that a change of room is 'normal' when given accomodation on certain floors. The girl KNEW exactly how bad the carpet was! Why would they book customers into rooms in such a poor state? We were changed to a room with newer furniture but older carpet...it was much cleaner, as was the entire room. This experience has me wondering who decides the star rating for accomodations. Do the owners rate themselves? We have tried 3 Star, and this was a 4 star...neither were acceptable. Obviously the only place to stay is 5 star...Hyatt, Hilton etc....can everyone afford to pay their prices?? We did not, nor attempted to eat here. A 10-15 minute walk brought us to a block of eateries. Stay somewhere else, if you can...or check to see when they complete refurbishing this joint.

Filth disgusting and poor service to boot

Where to start. How other reviewers can forgive this place its quirks is beyond me! This place should be reported to the health department and the management made to humigate it and refurbish it. Canberra was full this is all we could find so believe me we had no choice. On arrival I advised that I was Mr Walsh they gave me the check in form for a Ms Waschka (who I met at my conference) I pointed this out to the clerk who gave me a look that would freeze ice. Maybe I should have taken Ms Waschka's room. Room 1309 certainly had nice views of the Canberra CBD and hills but there was not one square inch of the carpet that was not heavily soiled with stains. It was matted and disgusting and for good measure on the right side of the bed there was a large vomit stain with detritus still attached and a feint smell. But they were full as was Canberra so thank god for the balcony door. I didnt pack slippers so called house keeping for towels and laid them on the flor so that I didnt have to walk on it! The furniture was likewise dirty and dusty and in a very poor state of repair. I didnt dare sit on the chairs as the arms were so greasy they were shiny. The bathrooms as others have stated was old and tired. Mine was cleanish although the shaver head of the previous guest was still on the shelf. Room service breakfast the next day arrived 35 minutes late and to continue the filthy theme the inside of the coffee cup was brown! I had to use the one in the room. There were no condments like sauce or even pepper or salt on the tray let alone sugar for the coffee. Whilst away for the day the housekeeping at least left extra towels as my note asked so that my feet were safe from the foetid floor. But someone left the balcony door open for me to find later that evening. So much for security! My laptop sat in front of an open balcony door all day. Perhaps they were airing the vomit smell? The next day I decided not to have room service as the wait was too much and went to the buffet breakfast the plates were filthy and I waited over 10 minutes for fresh cutlery. Upon checking out 'Bo' at the front desk would not make eye contact with me despite me being at the front of the queue and her station being free so I had to wait till another clerk was free. I would never stay at this property again or any Rydges for that matter and this place seriously should be reported to the health authorities.
