I was ripped off by this hotel - they lost my reservation for a 2br apartment and had to stay (with 2 kids) in a queen room. They refunded the difference between my internet special rate for the 2br and their rack rate for the queen! Besides that, the bed sagged, the main light didn't work, the air conditioner was noisy, the spare pillows were dirty, the sofa was dusty and the bathroom was run down. Don't stay here!

I was very disappointed with the room, it was very tired looking and the mould around the spa and tiles in the bathroom was disgusting. I will not be staying at a Rydges again.

The grounds are well kept and buildings newly renovated. The staff were very helpful, friendly and accomodating. Apart from a few small problems eg a couple of spiders in the room and the toilet stopped flushing once, it was a perfect stay and the problems were dealt with within 15 mins of us reporting them. The room was very nice, facilities excellent-with free use of pool, spa, sauna, pool table, tennis courts etc. Restaurant was gorgeous and by being a rydges priority member it was a cheap very nice dinner with cheap drinks. It was a very relaxing and comfortable stay which was wonderful and extrememly affordable.
I would certainly be returning asap and would recommend this resort to all!

How NOT to enjoy your holiday

from Nad49
Following a long twelve hour drive, our family arrived at the Resort at 6pm and as expected, very tired and hungry. Being late June, the outside temperature was a very chilly 3C. At the time of checking-in, we requested a restaurant booking. We were informed by the reception that 'it was a quiet night' and therefore a booking was not necessary.
When we arrived at our room, we found out there was no hot water. We reported this to the reception and they assured us they would investigate the matter. We then proceeded to the restaurant and was told that it was fully booked due to a school camp. A restaurant staff offered a table in the breakfast cafe and informed us that we could only order from the room service menu. They also suggested that the petrol station adjacent to the Resort also offered meals. We waited one and a half hours before our meals finally arrived (our curry was microwave heated - 2 mins???). The quality of the food was sub-standard (the 'stir-fry' noodles were more like a soup).
Management confirmed our hot-water complaint and, added to our frustration, offered a room between two school groups. We were also offered an upgrade but at a cost. Badly in need of a good night sleep, we chose the latter. Upon arriving at the new rooms, we found we had been given the wrong keys. In zero temperature, we had to run back to the reception to obtain the correct keys. It was almost 10pm before our family of five finally settled. During the night, the reverse cycle heater malfunctioned and changed to air-conditioning. As this was controlled at the office, it could not be turned-off. My son and I survived the night by loading on all our thermals and jumpers. We reported the matter to the front desk and at 6am, a small heater was delivered to our room (absolutely useless). We promptly packed our bags and checked-out. At no time did management offered any apology. The only positive outcome was that we found an awesome cafe for breakfast enroute to the snowfields.

Would we stay again? Would you?

ps - a feedback was sent to Rydges HQ and, as expected, no response.

Depressing compound on road to Sydney (really... just keep going!)

from L
Hotel is a long way from the city - it is actually in NSW (which makes getting a decent meal quite an expedition: $50 cab fare to Manuka, for instance!).

Lobby is smart and well renovated... and then it goes down hill. You leave out the back door outside to a rather sad pool/entertaining area (the 'resort' in the name is seriously pushing it!) and back into what looks like something between a medium security asylum and an outer suburban high school. Think low clinker brick boxes on concrete slabs surrounded by pathways, covered walkways and brown gardens.

My room smelled of rising damp, had a very basic bathroom but otherwise was basic and OK. Shower was very unreliable. All rooms are on the ground - which means to have any light in the room you need to open the curtains - quite exposing if you like some privacy, and the lighting in the rooms isnt really good enough to compensate.

I did breakfast at the glamorous truck stop down the road - at least it wasn't pretending to be something it is not!

Dear A&L,

I thank you for your feedback in regards to your recent stay at Rydges Eagle Hawk Resort.

Rydges Eagle Hawk Resort is located on the outskirts of Canberra on the NSW/ ACT Border. The resort property is a 15 minute drive to the centre of the CBD and 10 minutes to the Canberra Airport. A cab to the CBD generally costs $35. Canberra has many eating/ dining precints like Manuka on the other side of the CBD but for several eating restaurant alternatives you can visit Dickson, a 5 minute drive from the resort.

Rydges Eagle Hawk Resort also provides several eating options including the Wintergarden Restaurant, Cafe MUNCH and rooms service is also available.

The resort was refurbished in late 2007 and the accommodation rooms and public areas are looking great!

You will be happy to know that the resort pool area has recently been upgraded with the addition of a new food outlet called the PIZZA BAR. This area is now a favourite of mine and the feedback from guests has been very positive.

I do hope you get the opportunity to visit us again.

Yours sincerely,

It was a very relaxing and comfortable stay which was wonderful and extrememly affordable. Even though it was 10-15 mins out of the main part of town the resort itself more then made up for it, as I have stayed closer in town for alot more then i paid for this resort and didnt get nearly the same service!

I would certainly be retuning asap and would recommend this resort to all!

Dear lolmm88,

Thank you for taking the time to complete this very positive feedback in regards to your recent visit to Rydges Eagle Hawk Resort. The responses our guests provide us with are an invaluable source of information and allow us to improve our standards and service.

After completing an extensive refurbishment over the last 15-months, it is very rewarding to receive such positive feedback.

Rydges Eagle Hawk Resort is a viable option to the CBD Canberra hotels and whilst a brief 15 minute drive to the CBD centre, our accommodation rates compensate for this.

I was happy to note your positive feedback in regards to the Rydges PriorityGUEST benefits you received. This is a very rewarding programme and further enhances your stay.

lolmm88, I thank you again and look forward to welcoming you back to the resort again soon.

t Return

from CMC-CNSW
Stayed at the hotel & attended a conference. Whilst there I had the worst room service meal ever!(inedible curry of the day). The water supply to the room was cut off overnight, coffee supply ran out for every morning and afternoon tea break over 2 days and the toilet facilities in the conference area blocked up on the first morning, not to be relieved. The dining area had all the charm of a railway cafe. However, the room itself was comfortable and well appointed.

Basic family value

from GedandNick
Basic motel-type family accommodation that at the family rate was good value for money, inclusive of breakfast. Our unit was recently repainted and the beds were new. There is a good playground and swimming pool. About 15 minutes from central Canberra. We would stay again if we were passing through Canberra, but look at other options closer to town if Canberra is your focus.

What a nightmare!!!!!!!

from bbgirl58
I made the booking a month in advance and gave my credit card details. When we arrived there was no record of our booking and was told that there was no rooms available. As we were travelling with other parties we had no desire to try elsewhere . It was my husbands 50th birthday as I explained to the girl when I made the booking. The staff eventually found us a room and would move us to another room the next day. The room was disgusting. There was even food?? stains running down the cupboards. The shower head had to be held up while you had a shower. We had booked a barbeque by the pool for our group. As they had supposedly double booked we were shunted to a back room and feed broiled sausages and lettuce (not a tomato or dressing to be seen). Our luggage was to be changed to our new room the next day. When we arrived back after a days outing our luggage was nowhere to be found. It took staff over and hour to locate our luggage, minus the beer we had in a bag. Arriving back home from our holiday we were surprised to find we were charged a 'no show' fee on our credit card statement for the supposed booking that they had no record of. The cheek. Charged twice for a lousy hotel room!!! The money was refunded after we complained but no apology was forthcoming. Never stay in this hotel. It's the worst hotel I have ever been to. The staff just did not care.

Dear Sir/ Madam,

I appreciate you bringing to our attention your concerns with regards to your recent stay in April 2007 at Rydges Eagle Hawk Resort Canberra. I thank you for your feedback as it is an invaluable source of information and also allows us to improve our standards and service.

Whilst this is the first time this feedback has been provided directly to the resort in regards to your stay I have communicated your concerns to the Management Leadership Team. They will review and ensure action taken to rectify the issues you have presented to us.

Furthermore, Rydges Eagle Hawk Resort will now offer visitors to the ACT the ideal accommodation solution, with the expected completion of a $3 million refurbishment in June 2007. The result of the six-month project is that Rydges Eagle Hawk Resort will have vastly improved and modernised its offer. The concerns you have communicated with your accommodation room will no doubt be addressed in this refurbishment.

I thank you again for your feedback and hope you will give us the opportunity in the future to turn your negative experience into a positive one.

Allow some time before bed...

from dairyfloss
I stayed here for a last minute trip to Canberra on business and will make sure I don't do that again... I can appreciate that a 2-star hotel will not have the same look, feel or facilities that it's 4 & 5 star stablemates may, but I was expecting something a little better to be honest.

Depressingly void of residents (maybe just when I was there though!), an out of date 70's fitout & very limited food and beverage service (which is fine in a city hotel, but more difficult where the hotel is remote and your only option for sustainence).

Make sure you allow ample time before bed to round up all of the creepy crawlies and mosquitos which will no doubt have come in to say g'day in the hours preceding lights out... this was an issue for me even in their top spa suite!

On the positive side, the staff are really friendly, albeit the majority seemed to be in training, and the shuttle into town each morning was also a plus.

Falue for money.

from KKmad
It all dependents on what you want to send!! You are not going to get Champagne on a beer budget!
I had to make a last minute dash to Canberra last month and I usually stay at the Medina but at the time all accommodation of that standard was booked out. – Actually most of Canberra’s accommodation was completely booked out at the time. Rydges Eagle Hawk Resort is actually in New South Wales but only 10 -15 minutes from the Canberra CBD.
OK – it was not 5 star but neither is the price and for $139 for 2 people in a comfortable, clean room, with in house movies, swimming pool, bar, café, kangaroos grazing at your door step and a small buffet breakfast included in the price – it was very adequate and I wouldn't disregard it as an option.

Rooms need refurbisihing badly!

from Epollene
The web site sounded great but the rooms were just terrible and needed reburbishment BADLY. They were just terrible. We booked a familty room and they were just 2 interconnecting motel rooms. Frayed carpet, unappealing and just plain shabby. I would not recommend this place for a stay.

How Wrong!

from ritapaola
When we phoned up to make a reservation the lady on the other end raved how great the rooms were and that they had recently been refurbushed. After all her comments we made the reservation however when we arrived it was nothing like her description. The room smelt horrible, not sure if it was vomit, smoke or alcohol maybe all three and for the price we were paying you would expect a decent HOTEL room however it was more like a MOTEL room. We actually found it bad enough that we could not stay there for another five minutes, so we cancelled our room and left.
