Historical Traveller Reviews of Crowne Plaza Canberra Hotel

First Choice

from booker1
Crowne Plaza is my first choice for a hotel in Canberra. It is so convenient to our office and the city. Our regular travellers love the fact that the staff greet them by name and really look after them, a rariety at most hotels these days.

Fantastic service

from Mr-Smithkline
I travel to Canberra quite often and when I do I always stay at Crowne Plaza.
Everytime I have stayed there the staff make me feel completely at home. They always remember all the things that I like so that they're readily available for my next visit. The staff are also very friendly and helpful and go to great lengths to satisfy my needs.

Very dated and overated.

from Alby1
Very disappointed, I found the rooms to be very outdated and the bathroom was something I would expect for 2 star accommodation. I expected a lot more for the price I payed ($168 per night). I also did not appreciate being kept awake all night by the noise from the nightclub downstairs, people were still making noise after 5am. Car parking was also a problem and cost an additional $10 per night (which was not mentioned when I made the reservation). "Superior city view room" - What a joke... Good breakfast though.

Thank you for your valuable feedback. We are aware that our current hotel room product is tired and have just commenced a $6 million room refurbishment.

We’re excited about the new look we will officially unveil in August, but until then we’re staging the works to make sure our other guests are unaffected.

From 8 March and during regular business hours, we’ll be renovating one floor at a time. There won’t be any structural works taking place, so you won’t even know the refurbishment team is there.

Features of the newly refurbished rooms include LCD televisions, ergonomic leather desk chairs, day and night blinds, chaise lounges, room service tables, large work areas, queen size beds replaced with king size beds and a change in layout.

If you have any questions at all regarding our refurbishment programme please don’t hesitate to contact me on 02 6274 5502 or via

Kind regards

If you are looking for a very average hotel ... this is it. I was very disappointed after checking in as the location was fantastic, as were the staff. The room I had was dated and old, and the cleanliness was questionable. The corners of the room and the hallways in the hotel looked like they have never been vacuumed. The bed had a very old quilt cover and i question whether it was washed for every new guest. A CSI lamp would reveal some interesting stories. Unless you get a room facing the park, expect a lot of noise from the bar downstairs till the early hours of the morning. The photo's are very deceiving - the bathroom was also very basic, with a shower above the bath and an old shower curtain. I would not book this hotel again.

What a D-U-M-P

from S6blr
Clearly someone is resting on their collective laurels as the location is the ONLY thing that this "hotel" has going for it. The audacity to charge a guest paying $300/nite $10/nite MORE for parking is just the start of the disappointments. The rooms are DINGY, SMELLY, DANK, and in need of complete stripping and refurbishment. The front desk staff seem genuinely embarassed about their property, giving us free drinks tickets (2 for 1) in their bar as they realised we were Holiday Inn Premier customers didn't help. Every 40-odd minutes there was an airconditioner fan SCREECH from the back of the hotel, that even with windows closed you couldn't sleep through. The area the hotel is in is convienient for shopping -- although Canberra is hardly the shopping "mecca" of Sydney or Melbourne. As I have to come to Canberra once a month or more, after 3 miserable stays, I will NEVER stay at this property again.

This hotel looks fine on the outside but the rooms are badly in need of renovation. The carpets are very worn and dirty, and the furniture which was fairly budget to begin with are showing their age. The bathroom is small however, what was most telling about this establishment was when I asked for a second bathrobe. I was bluntly told to come down to the laundry and pick it up myself! This hotel is attached to the casino and the convention sentre, which are pretty much the reasons why it stays in buisness. It's a 10 minute walk to the city. The buffet was ok, nothing too special.Overall I wouldn't stay again unless I had no choice i.e. conference etc.

Awesome Bar!

I am a Canberra resident and frequently visit Crowne Plaza Canberra's bar, "Binara one". Our offices are located within walking distance of Binara one and it has become a regular spot for many of my friends and colleagues.
The staff are friendly and make fantastic cocktails. I recommend for anyone who is looking for a contemporary cool place to drink where you are not overrun by smokers and crazy drunks. It is chilled and unique enviroment which I can't fault.

Not a redeeming feature to be found

from Charade_8
We stay at Hotels all over the world, for our work, these also include Motels.. this hotel is quite possibly the very worst I have ever stayed in ANYWHERE !!...
The food in room service was inedible, the sheets on the bed, torn!! I can promise you they were.
You are promised Park Views and end up with a tired old worn room overlooking a construction site, I feel all in all an utter disgrace and I can only assume that anything good found on trip advisor about this tired old hotel would have to be written from someone who did not stay there.
The staff are rude and indifferent, are they really "service industry people" the beds hard and old, the bathroom so small and worn, why on earth would anyone in 2006 wish to stay at this place when there are wonderful Hotels and Motels to found anywhere and everywhere.
Even the breakfast of poached eggs and tomatoes and goodness knows what else was a disgrace and the wrong order came anyway. we could not eat it, the room service dinner was just as bad.. JUST A MISERABLE PLACE . CROWN PLAZA whoever is looking after you should be ashamed.

Give It A Miss

This hotel looks good on the outside, but the rooms are tired & dated. They definitely need a make over! Check in was great, very friendly & helpful. We asked to be upgraded away from the building site across the road (which we had to pay for) & were told we were being moved to the Deluxe wing. If that was deluxe, I'm glad we didn't stay in standard!
We were told we'd have a park view & it was half park / half car park. The furnishings were terrible & the bathroom was a disgrace - small, old, patched up repairs all over. Also, you could hear every noise that was made in there & as my partner came down with food poisoning, it was not a pleasant experience.
We ended up only staying for one night, although we had booked for four. This hotel was really disappointing & we wouldn't recommend it to anyone apart from business travellers on a budget who where only going to use their room for sleeping & a shower. I'm sure their are better in Canberra.
Note: When you are paying for a park view, it would be nice if the windows were clean & not covered with giant cobwebs.

4* prices for 2.5* service

Stayed here for 5 nights with a work colleague for a conference at the convention centre. The good things about the hotel are the free internet and computer access (could not get their WiFi to work though) and how close it was to the convention centre and central Canberra.

The rooms are clean and a good size. They just do not clean them while you are there! Of the 5 nights we stayed, 4 days after 1600 hours I had to call housekeeping and ask for the room to be cleaned!!! They do not have "please clean my room" door labels - maybe this is the problem? On the one day our room was cleaned, I specifically went to the front desk before 7am and requested the room be cleaned before 2pm as I needed to use the room then. Shocking. The very basic "sorry" after 4 nights of this was inadequate and I felt some sort of compensation should have been offered.

The buffet breakfast is good but very pricey at $28 unless included in your room rate.

Would not stay here again in a hurry unless there was no other option close to the area (and there are!).

Top Local Tips for Canberra

Dinner at VAscos If you have young children (3-12yrs) This place has an excellent kids menu with some activites for the kids, colouring in etc.The adult menu is also very good.

Getting around/Where to stay Hire a car as the public transport is expensive and hard to find and not very helpful. Recommend to stay out of the city in one of the hotels in the suburbs as it is easier and closer to most attractions

Parliment house A must do. An interesting building and great tour provided for free! Great view of Canberra city. A nice walk from the city center through the park and lake.
