Top Local Tips for Bangkok

If you have only a day or two, stay by the river. The hotels by the river, particularly the Hilton seem very nice.

Two places I was only there for 3 nights. Ate at the hotel restaurant Celadon the first night and it's really quite good. The next night, ate at Eat Me, and Asian Fusion restaurant. Fusion usually gives me visions of bad 70's jazz-rock bands and equally bad 90's Euro-Asian fodder. This place serves simple but well prepared food from fresh ingredients. Good service, nice location and you can book and outside table. One of my better dining experiences in the past year which includes Jean Georges in Shanghai, Tetsuya and Aria in Sydney, Petrus in HK and any number of restaurants between Shenzhen and Qiqihar in China. The last night we ate at Ban Chiang which was Thai food, well prepared and a quiet location off the main roads. Again, outdoor seating is available but book in advance. When we were there (Feb) the night time temperatures were around 30-31C.

Getting around by boat It's so easy to get around Bangkok. I suggest hopping on a boat on the river. For about 30 baht we were able to get all the way from the Grand Palace back down to our hotel. It was fun too!
