A glamorous Manila hotel....

While most of Metro-Manila's top hotels are in the Makati area, I can wholeheartedly recommend one of the rare truly top notch hotels in the Malate/Ermita area. It's the Manila Diamond Hotel on Roxas Blvd and Querino. This area was formerly the center of Manila tourism, but most of the hotels have become quite seedy, as has much of the area. However, there are a small number of hotels that have remained in top shape, and the Manila Diamond Hotel is one of them. The hotel is glitzy and glamorous, but in a rather tasteful way. The Diamond Hotel suggests a clean lined New York Hotel rather than something out of Las Vegas.I don't mean to suggest an old time understated elegance like New York's Pierre or St.Regis hotels, but a hotel suggesting the upscale glamour of the Grand Hyatt or Mandarin Oriental hotels in New York. Not overly flashy, but still quite tasteful and modern. The service was excellent, and the superior room was well decorated and thoughfully equipped. The room showed only slight traces of wear; in general the room was in excellent condition. This New Yorker was quite impressed ! If you have reason to stay in the rather deteriorated Malate area, rather than in the much more upscale Makati area, I highly recommend the Manila Diamond Hotel. There is still a lot of nightlife in Malate,(modest in scale and taste) and it's close to the airport, the Cultural Center of the Philippines, the American Embassy, and the modestly revived Manila Bay area.Along with the new Hyatt Hotel and Casino, the Diamond Hotel seems the most upscale hotel in the entire area....having said that, I haven't been to the Manila Hotel recently, so I can't comment on its current state.
