A great deal in Tokyo!

I stayed at Hotel Universe Nihombashi Kayabacho for two weeks, late March/early April in 2005. I had three important criteria: low price, high-speed internet access, and convenient location. This hotel aced all three. I paid 6,200 yen per night (except for Thursdays, which were about 8,820 yen per night). I'd requested a room with internet access, which was just good, but good enough. And I was practically on top of Kayabacho station, with access to the Hibiya and Tozai subway lines. This put me no more than about 2 stops away from any other subway line in Tokyo. I could get anywhere with no problem. (Get a subway map and don't leave home without it - this is the *only* way to get around in Tokyo!)
The rooms are tiny, but comfortable. No view to speak of. Having a private bath in a room at this price is a big plus. If you're in a single room, be aware that there's no closet and no drawers - just a couple of pegs, maybe 8 cm long, to hang things.
The only luxury here is the low price for a clean, functional room. The restaurant in the basement served a breakfast buffet for 1,000 yen, but the better deal is to walk a block up to Eitai-dori and turn right, go about 10 m to the noodle joint on the right. You can get a good breakfast of udon or soba for about 6,500 yen. There's a Yoshinoya gyudon place close by also.
In addition to the location right on top of Kayabacho station, you're just steps away from an izakaya (Japanese pub), a coffee shop and a Lawson's convenience store. There's a post office two blocks away if you need to send something home.
There isn't much going on close by after dark, just a karaoke box if you want to do that. This is mostly a business district, though there are some art galleries within a few blocks. The real attraction of staying here is the proximity of the subway station. If you want to go out at night, you'll ride the subway to get to Shinjuku or Roppongi, and head back by midnight. If you stay out much later than that, you're stuck with a (very expensive!) taxi ride or a night in a capsule hotel.
The staff speak serviceable-to-good English, and are most helpful. If you ask them for the location of anything in the local area, they'll pull out a map, circle your destination, and give it to you.
Have breakfast in the hotel restaurant at least once or twice - most of the guests are Japanese, but you might also run into some friendly Brits or Aussies who will be happy to share some stories about their adventures.
To sum up... I was very happy with this hotel. The price was right, the internet access was adequate, and the location was extremely convenient. I did a lot of searching for hotels before my trip, and I couldn't find anything that looked like a better deal. Highly recommended if you're going to Tokyo to spend all day seeing the sights, not just to hang out in your hotel room.
