Auto Rickshaw Ripoffs If you are spotted as a tourist in certain parts of town, there will be autorickshaw drivers anxious to "take you where you want to go". In reality they will first take you to a "special" handicrafts shop. The reason the shop is special is that they are getting a kickback from the shop. Now these shops are no better or worse than any other, but it can certainly be annoying when you are headed for dinner and your driver is headed for the handicraft shop. Also beware of the driver who doesn't want to use the meter. If the driver doesn't reset the meter then just get out of the vehicle... otherwise it will be an unpleasant experience when at the end of your ride and he is arguing that you owe him 5 times a typical fare for the ride. I hear that this problem is much worse in Delhi.

Pre-paid cell phone service in India In India, purchasing a pre-paid SIM card for your mobile phone requires: (1) a copy of your passport (2) a copy of your visa, (3) a letter from your hotel confirming that you are a guest at their location, (4) a passport-type photograph. I have read (but cannot personally confirm) that you may have trouble using a SIM card in a different Indian state than the state in which it was purchased.

What's on in Bangalore See page 3 of the local daily Deccan Herald. For train travel in India, either go through an agent or get to the rail offices or station early... else you'll be in a long slow moving queue.
