Top Local Tips for Beijing

Write it down Always write your destination down in Chinese characters (someone at the hotel will do this for you) - or ask someone to tell the driver the destination in Chinese. If you're in any doubt of the location, call someone at your destination who speaks Chinese on your mobile, and pass the phone to the driver so they can give him directions. NB: This assumes i) you don't speak Chinese; and ii) the taxi driver doesn't speak English - most don't!

Shopping in sections Once you get tired of the knock off stuff at the various markets, Beijing has districts specializing in various goods. For example there is a shoe street, a music street a kitchenware street etc. This usually consists of several blocks of shops mostly specializing in a given product. If you are looking for something specific, in my case a specialized violin bow, you should be able to find it in that item's shopping area.
