Tunisia is great but just DO NOT STAY at the Le Sultan, Hammamet. It's been a nightmare. I had a taxi arranged a week in advance and it never arrived even though I got a sent receipt on my email and having talked to the front desk of the hotel the day before arriving. Arriving at a completely empty hotel, the front desk gave me a room with a view of the building below and not the sea - strike two. The staff at the front desk were unhelpful and actually disdainful. OK a bad start. My wife and I then went to restaurant and had an awful meal which cost an arm & leg. Gosh it was not a nice start at all. The next day, we went to the gym, incidentally my shed is better equipped, and nothing seemed to work. We then spent most of the time outside the hotel. So we had been promised a double bed but got two singles only - remember the hotel was empty??? And one day, this being a four star, we found that our room had been ignored on the cleaning cycle, so no towels and non arrived even when ordering them. Four stars from a Fawlty Towers sketch I think. The swimming pool was indoors but cold and then closed at 9pm, remember we were staying when the weather meant that the indoor pool had to be used - the ill equipped gym closed at 7pm...??? The rooms were badly decorated, trying to hide a bad job by putting modern fixtures in them. Then to compound everything, the air conditioning didn't work. We almost froze one night and then baked the next.

So the nightmare was confounded when the manager, Mr Allani, at the end of our stay, identified that a mistake had been made and we had to pay an extra 11 pounds per night - no good will - nothing. So I would recommend you do not stay here - we went to the neighbour hotel for a meal and really enjoyed it - just wished we'd stayed there instead - as the staff were so gracious...you live and learn... please contact me if you have any questions - obliner@hotmail.com

Top Local Tips for Hammamet

something to see/ eat in Hammamet On the main road between Hammamet and Nabeul is a turn off to a quite rural area ( it is before the first roundabout out of Hammamet). The road is pretty bad, but once you get to the end of it you will find an amazing lake nestled in hills. There is also a villa where you can rent quad bikes near there. If you are looking for some great non-tunisian food, or are tired of the bland stuff on menus in restaurants, there is a Slovenian restaurant on the way to Nabeul. I was not able to get the street name, but it is easy to find - it is right after the Nabeul University (4th roundabout from Hammamet). The food is excellent and the service perfect.

Take the bus from Tunis and save 120 dinars both ways Take the public bus from Tunis from the Bab Aliwa station to get to Hammamet. It only costs 3 dinars where a hotel shuttle costs 70 dinars. The bus drops you on a main road in Hammamet where there are many taxis awaiting to take you on the 7 dinar (or less) cab ride to your hotel. To get back, just ask the cab driver to take you to the bus station to get to Tunis and he'll take you to the right place. If you're worried or nervous, go purchase the Lonely Planet Travel Guide for Tunisia. It is a life and money saver for anyone in Tunisia who does not speak Arabic and wants to save money by acting like a local. The bus was easy and worth the money saved!

Medina in Hammamet Unless you enjoy being pulled about my wally's spouting rubbish English catchphrases like 'Asda Price', stay away - the friday market in Nabuel is similar but without as much cajoling.
