great coffee house look for the Msumbi Coffee House just around the corner from Serena
Some do's and don'ts 1) don't bother with the Mercury Bar. Overblown prices, and not that pretty (the T-shirts make great gifts though...) 2) do have a look at the Gallery Bookshop, just gorgeous and some of the best art/craft work I saw 3) do a spice tour: It's a little cheesy and they blatantly hit you up for a tip at the end, but it's still worth it (and any decent traveller should tip them anyway) 4) ask the porters in the hotel if you want a good recommendation for a local place to eat - they sent me to a place called (I think) the Passing View, a local cafe, and I doubt David Beckham would have received a better welcome. The soccer was on (which I'm not really into), but I was welcomed with genuine friendliness by owners, waiters and other patrons - had a great time roaring with laughter at the game, trying out my Kiswahili, and a great chicken byriani into the bargan, for less than US$4) 5) don't eat at the hotel restaurant when there are so many other great options around. Have fun!
getting to know stonetown it really is best to get someone to take you around as the town is a maze of little narrow alleyways where you could easily get lost and soe could feel a little threatend as it some streets have very poor people and no tourists...! Also the peace museum doesnt seem to exist any more so we never found livingstones chest so again we should have done a town tour
