We found the hotel to be ideally situated to explore Stone Town. We found the staff to be friendly and helpfull. Boat trips can be arranged by the waiters at good rates with reliable crew. All in all a good experience.No alcohol, but Livingston'S Bar right next door.

Restaurants near Tembo Hotel Tembo hotel restaurant - food lovely, not cheap but reasonable, especially given setting. Livingstones - beachfront, next door to Tembo along the beach. Food very nice, wide range of cocktails/alcohol. Service slow. Archipelago - highly recommended, especially the daily specials, which feature lots of seafood and fish. ECT Plaza - Rooftop restaurant with lovely views. Extremely slow service even though there was only one other table in, but the food was nice. Mercury's - One word: overrated. NB Forodhani Gardens is currently closed for renovation, so no opportunity to try the famed food stalls.

Tipping and fighting off the vendors 1. Steel yourself against street vendors and shop owners. Do not speak to them, do not respond in any way. Ignore them and they will go away. Most of all do not buy from them unless you are experienced in negotiating.Hotels sell goods with a price tag on them that is usually well below anything that you will hear from the vlips of a vendor. 2. Everyone wants a financial reward - a tip. A few deserve it. Make sure you carry small denominations of the local currency or US dollars. 10% tips are adequate for waiter services. One Dollar is adequate for bag carriers etc. 3. You can't get Tanzanian shillings until you get to Tanzania. US Dollars are accepted everywhere in Tanzania. Forget Shillings get dollars before you go. Remember - lots of one dollar notes for tips.

Don't be scared of the locals At first we were a bit scared of the locals. We thought that they were sussing us out to see what they could steal. In fact the just wanted to talk to us and learn English/Italian (I am Scottish and my husband is Italian). They are amazing at picking up languages and seem to be able to learn just by listening to people having conversations. Tourism is so important on the island that being able to communicate means having the chance of making a bit more money.
