Top Local Tips for Zanzibar
Not a lot going on the island Zanzibar is not for you if you're looking for touristy things to do. Sure there's a pseudo "swim with the dolphins" though not quite as good as you might imagine. There is GREAT diving and snokeling. The island has a fascinating history and Stonetown is a great place to explore. Some natural beauty. But if you like sophisticated night clubs and not being exposed to extreme poverty, this is not the vacation spot for you. I'm a photojournalist, so I revel in the visual, whether "pretty" or not. I loved Stonetown.

Watch out for the airport! Warning about Zanzibar airport! Make sure you have plenty of dollar notes, as, despite the sign asking that you ignore requests for "unsolicited requests for money" you will need them! We were warned about the US$30 exit fee but not the US$50 for "luggage" - no receipt available when asked as it went into the pocket of the check-in man. All bags and suitcases are hand searched before they will check them in so don't bother locking them until after this or you'll be digging about for padlock keys. Due to the lack of electricty on the island there were no x-ray facilites so there was a team of 3 or 4 ladies checking hand luggage and hand bags. Be warned, if they like it they want it - particularly chocolate and lighters. The departure lounge is non-smoking but you are told you are welcome to come back out for a cigarette if you would like - the reality is you have to leave your bags, pay US$1 each and forfeit your cigarette lighter on the way back! NOT GOOD
