Top Local Tips for Zanzibar
Mercury Restaurant On the main beach front there is a restaurant called Mercury. This restaurant is a tribute to Freddie Mercury whom was born in Zanzibar and in general the theme works also the food is good.
Fascinating historical and colourful town Get a guide from your hotel, not on the street, its worth the fairly minor cost for 2 or 3 hours knowledgeable local guide to show you all the historical and fascinating places, House of Wonders, Fort, old slave market, Mercury's bar, the amazing indoor marketplace, etc, etc. Shopping is mostly small bazaar shops which can be a bit pushy but still polite, but on the main street near the post office not far from the Dhow there are some great aircond larger shops. Buy great Masai beaded wares, wooden carved bowls and wonderful fabrics, scarves, kangas, etc.
