Over priced for what you get

On arrival we were told our room wasn't ready - check in time was 2pm and we arrived at 5pm. We were told it would take 20mins but came back 1 hour later only to be told room still wasn't ready. We complained and magically the room was instantly ready. The room was okay but most of the furniture was broken. Room service was unreliable and it took them 3 goes to get an order right. The resturants were extremely over-priced and the food was very bad quality. A chargrilled steak turned out to be fried in oil and the other dishes were badly made. This hotel may have all the services to make it 4 stars but the quality of service is definitley not! The springs themselves were enjoyable (once they fixed the problem with the pool and re-filled it). If you stay here, rather opt for the self-catering apartments as the extra money you pay for a hotel room just isn't worth it and you can avoid the terrible food.

Top Local Tips for Montagu

Best value for money November in South Africa is spring/summer, very warm and also outside school holidays. Avalon Springs, being family oriented, got a few day-tripper groups from schools, for the hot springs facilities and fun, during off-season in November so I should imagine is busy during school holidays. Apparently February, end of summer and out of season, is also a good time to visit Western Cape.

Templeton's Restaurant Is it just me or should one run a mile when a restaurant feels the need to tell you that its good? This may indeed be a Top 20 restaurant in the country, but my personal experience (admittedly of just two dishes) was a complete disappointment. Perhaps the regular chef was off, or I should have chosen better? The presentation was excellent, but thats where it ended for me. My experience suggests that the restaurant is complacent and overrated.
