Top Local Tips for Cape Town
if you have a few days... After my business trip, I took a day trip with American Eagle tours to the Cape of Good Hope. It was an excellent tour and a good way to decompress after a long meeting. The guide was helpful and the group was small enough to be enjoyable. The Cape is a must-do, and after seeing Camps and Hout Bay, we took a launch out to see bachelor seals off the coast--wonderful! The drive through the preserve to the cape itself was lovely, and we saw a fair amount of wildlife. Climb up to the light house at the cape, enjoy the view! The restaurant there is also excellent, though the gift shop is ho-hum. Be sure to see the penguins of Boulder Beach, and you will find yourself wishing you could take one home. I also took a 3-day private tour with Dirk of 34 South Tours, and not only was the price reasonble, but we had great fun along the way. We took the Garden Route tour, the highlight of which was probably the elephant sancutuary at Knysna. I felt that I saw a lot and fun in the process.
Penguins A visit to Capetown just isn't complete without seeing the South African "Jackass" Penguins in the area. Two places they can be seen at Robbin Island or down in Boulder's Beach, which have other things to see along with the Penguins. Robbin Island is where Nelson Mandela and other prisoners were held and certainly is worth a visit. If youu go to Boulders Beach consider staying at the Boulder's Beach Lodge, which is right near where the Penguins nest. There was even a pair nesting in a potted plant outside the hotel. I did not think I was going to enjoy the Penguins as much as I did, but they are fascinating to watch. The reason they are also called the Jackass Penguin is they sound just like a Donkey when they call (or should I say bray).
Winelands Hire a car and head out to the winelands. Sixt have a desk at the hotel and the region is only an hour and bit away, incredible scenery and magnificent wine and food. A must do. I can highly recommend Franschhoek.
