Watch out! Be prepared for the driving conditions - people do not commonly follow any rules of the road. In Abuja proper the roads and signs ae pretty good, but once you get outside of the core of the city the roads get very rough. Accidents are common - we were rear ended while at a stand still at the Wuse Market (no major damage). If you are traveling in rural areas be prepared for unpaved roads or roads in major disrepair. Also road signs are scarce in the rural areas. Public transportation is cramped and usually not air conditioned. Your best bet is to hire a driver and air conditioned car (check with your hotel front desk). You have to be pretty gutsy to drive yourself. Even my husband who is a native Nigerian was shook up driving.

Airport transfers It is advisable, at least for a foreign traveller, to ensure beforehand that his/ her hosts or hotel have arranged an airport transfer, both to and from. The cab drivers are usually known to be unreliable.
