Top Local Tips for Niamey
Niamey Fantastic place, very remote, little English spoken. Markets excellent, museum good, easy to get around, safety good. Many fascinating villages are within a few hours drive of the city, so you can see a lot of this part of Niger while remaining in Niamey. Niger is not a carbon copy of Mali, but Mali felt more rich culturally --- I think this is because Niger has been primarily nomadic and fewer traces are left in towns. But, the people are great, many tribes and languages, and the dress of the people is diverse and fantastic. I did not go to Agadez, because it was off limits due to political problems.
