Top Local Tips for Windhoek
Downtown rolls up sidewalks on the weekend If you can plan your stop over and/or overnight arrival/departures so that they don't fall on the weekend. Not many people live downtown so the sidewalk really rolls up - especially on Sunday. During the business day it's really a hopping little town. Get out to the townships and visit Panduka Market - great goods and for a great cause.
Windhoek is a beautiful city Windhoek is a beautiful place. There are plenty of great restaurants, the Namibians LOVE their grilled meats and you can get an array of different wild game. I was there in October and March and the weather was lovely, it does get a bit cold at night so I would recommend a sweater. I stayed for 2 nights at the gaming lodge called Goche Ganas which was absolutely wonderful! I would recommend this lodge to anyone who is staying in Namibia. I got to see giraffe and wild game. I got a massage while overlooking the beautiful mountains. Travellers to Namibia should realise that Namibia is economically better off than other parts of Africa. Therefore, things are not cheap. Travellers should not walk by themselves downtown at night we had one business colleague that was robbed, so just be aware of your surroundings.
