I stayed there mid December 2005 and was mildly impressed with the standard of the decor and fitments. However I was expecting the grandeur matching that of it's reputation before modernisation. I was disappointed although the velour curtains and muted colours were small nuances of opulence past. The reception desk staff were quite surly and indifferent remiss of smile or warmth. Furrthermore they were not aware of the locale. Having asked where they would recommend to eat out for typical Namibian food - don't know. Ask directions to a nearbyStrasse or Avenue - don't know. Ask which type of taxi to use (Windhoek having 2 types), they were not sure. So being intrepid, I found out by speaking to local Namibians who were more than pleased to assist.

The buffet breakfast was fine replete with the requisite slices of various meats, juices breads etc. I feel though a greater selection of fayre to include hot food like kidneys, fish and seafood would have added breadth and value to a fairly mediocre spread.

The rooms were spacious and well appointed, modern and clean with fresh bathroom towels. The bed linen needed replacing as the spreads hark back to polyester quilted 1970's counterpanes.

The hilight in my opinion was the evening manager called Michael Maenda. Apart from him being rather a hansome devil, he was extremely helpful and hospitable offering us his undoubted wherewithal about Windhoek and his perspective on culture, politics and the world according the Namibians. A credit the the hotel!!
