Historical Traveller Reviews of Riad Dar Najat Hotel

A slice of French Cool

from ollie_atkins
To be honest, reviews aren't really my cup of tea, but in the case of Dar Najat I feel compelled to make an exception.
Tucked away in the back streets of the Medina, a stone's throw from the main square 'Djemaa El-Fna', this might just be the coolest Riad in all of Morocco. Sleek, sexy, very very cool, and about as laid-back as a Sultan's harem on a Sunday afternoon, you'll find yourself hard pressed to get out of bed in the morning, let alone off the sun-drenched roof terrace.
Dar Najat has the feel of a close friend who has invited you to stay for the weekend. With dynamite breakfasts, quality service, and in French owner Olivier, one of the friendliest and most helpful hosts you are ever likely to meet. A chilled-out corner of paradise in an exotic and exciting city that's already got me planning a return trip: "Ssalamu 'lekum".

best choice u could make...

from biglebowski19
an excellent sanctuary amidst the hustle that is marrakesh. i have stayed in many places that can be considered beautiful and the riad definitely lives up to the marketing shots. what can't be shown however, is the warmth of hospitality and the openness of riad owner, oliver. many people seem friendly for alterior motives, i.e. money, however, i found oliver and the beautiful saoud, to be great hosts and good friends. i would not hesitate to return, given the oppurtunty, and will recommend anyone , except the uptight, to open up and enjoy the welcome as they are unlikely to receive a warmer one anywhere else.

Fantastic hospitality in cool riad

from bstadt
I stayed in Dar Najat for four nights as a solo traveler. The riad was very cool and chic with great Moroccan decor and a lounge/ club like feel on the roof. It was truly a peaceful sanctuary in a crazy and hectic city. The atmosphere was chill and very inclusive, and I got to meet many other patrons and make new friends.

What made the experience incredibly special was not just the physical space but the owner Olivier and his girlfriend. Olivier took care of me and cared that I had a good experience from the time I arrived in Marrakesh until I left. My trip to Morroco was very last minute, and I arrived in Marrakesh without a reservation. After calling 10 riads with no luck and desperation kicking in, I dialed Olivier who did not have room that night but found me a room in a neighboring riad. The next day I checked in to his place and stayed for 4 nights. He personally showed me and some other guests Marrakesh and paid for a couple drinks in a cafe as well as provided info about what to do and not to do. Olivier had his staff wash some of my laundry and didn't charge and was quick to provide a juice or beer for no extra charge. He also helped me find a hotel in Essaouira. My experience would not have been nearly as nice without this assistance. Also a special mention for the help from Amin who they call Bob Marley (you'll understand if you meet him).

One thing to note, if you do have Olivier set up trips around Marrakesh, you will pay a premium that is more than you could potentially find through other sources. The premium is for the ease of setting up the trip and the safety of him knowing the drivers, but if you are on a budget it's possible to find cheaper alternatives.

Fantastic time in a lovely riad

from georgeandemily
My girlfriend and I stayed in the Widad room for 5 nights, and had a wonderful time.

The Riad is located about 5 mins from the main square, and provides a welcome retreat from the hustle and bustle of Marrakech. Many a relaxing hour was spent on the roof-terrace in the shade escaping from the midday sun.

The Riad's decor and ambience is fantastic, helped by the friendly staff who made us feel very welcome. Despite the relaxed feel, the riad and our room were always kept clean and tidy, and the staff were efficient at all times.

Special mention goes to Oliver the owner, who was a very useful source of local information, his mother who was lovely, and to Brownie the dog, who provided excellent comedy during the week.

We also had a day-trip to the coast whilst in Marrakech, Oliver organised this for us, and this was smoothly arranged, at a decent price, with a good driver - invaluable!

Overall, we had a brilliant time, and got the impression that all the other guests were having a similar experience. Riad's are sociable places, where you will see and interact with your fellow guests- if this is not for you, then a hotel in the new town is probably better, but if you want to stay in a beautifully decorated, friendly, "close to it all" guest house, then Riad Dar Najat is definately the choice.

I would heartily recommend to all.

Being in a riad and feeling home...

We spent four night at Dar Najat and we like to say that we enjoied the style of this house and the friendship of the staff.
The food is delicious, the rooms are extremely clean with very nuce fourniture.
The ouner is always ready to give you every direction you need: places to see, night life in town, shoops with very good prices for all you wont to buy.
He can arrange tours in the area with driver and guide at very good price (wewent to Essauira and we enjoied it very much).

A real home from home

from TerryandJune
Oliver, Souad and Browny (the dog) could not have been more welcoming, it felt like we were staying with old friends.

Dar Najat is a great base for exploring Marrakech. Just a few minutes walk from both the Jema al Fna and the Bahia Palace with the added benefit of having a local friend (in Oliver) to advise, arrange things and generally look after us.

Our room, (Widad) was really lovely - always impecably clean and very comfortable. If we have the opportunity to visit Marrakech again we will certainly be returning to Dar Najat.

A fantastic Riad

from thijs1981
Riad Dar Najat is a fantastic Riad. The owners, Olivier and his beautiful wife-to-be, and his friends form a wonderful cast of characters for your trip. It really is true: Riad Dar Najat is an oasis amidst the hectic and busy activity in the old city centre (Medina). And yet it is only a few minutes walk from the square. The thought that has gone into designing this Riad can't be described; it has to be seen. It truly is beautiful, from the vintage looking furniture to the great art on the wall. This place is something special.

Olivier and his staff took great care of us. From the nice breakfast, to serving cold drinks on the fine roof terrace, a great place to hang around (and enjoy the music Olivier selects, mostly nice soultracks but he should really throw away those UB40 songs!). We had one meal there which was splendid. Make sure to have diner at the riad at least once.

We went to the Ourika Valley as well, which was a great trip. Nice to get away from the center and see the Morrocan countryside a bit. The driver and guide that Olivier arranged were great.

Oh, and the dog was great fun too!

An Oasis in Marrakech

from TeamSmillie
We can't recommend this Riad highly enough! Great location, just a few minutes' walk from the hustle and bustle of the Djemaa el Fna square (once you can work out the maze of little streets!), the Dar Najat is an oasis of calm. And yet it's also full of life - Olivier and Souad are fantastic and generous hosts, helping to make our stay in Marrakech truly memorable. We miss them already... Olivier is definitely the star of the show, selecting just the right music to set the mood. We had a lot of laughs, and will never forget this genius of a Frenchman. If you stay here, you should definitely book at least one meal at the Riad - one of the best we had in Marrakech. We'd also recommend a trip to the Ourika Valley. With Olivier's help, we teamed up with a couple of other guests and hired a driver and guide, who took us up into the mountains and looked after us well. Fantastic scenery and well worth it - but beware of the "20 minute easy walk" to view the waterfall!
Thanks Olivier, for your care and attention, your warm welcome, your music, your food and your wonderful collection of art.

Perfect Paradise!

from rubyglittershoes
My partner and I spent 5 nights in Riad Dar Najat and we couldn't have been more pleased with our choice.

From the moment we arrived we were made to feel most welcome. The riad's owner, Oliver, arranged a taxi from the airport and was awaiting us with freshly-pressed orange juice and cooling mint tea - something we were extremely grateful for considering it was 35 degrees!

As seems to be the tradition in Morocco, each room is themed with a different colour and we stayed in the Leila room which was beautifully decorated and comfortable with a private shower-room and air-conditioning. In fact, the whole riad was adorned with lovely trinkets in a true Moroccan style (mosaic tiling, African paintings, ornate furniture etc) which you simply would not get if staying in a hotel. The attention to detail was what made the riad so special and you can see that a lot of love has gone into making it perfect. My favourite place was the roof terrace which even has a jacuzzi!

The riad is situated just 5 minutes from Jemaa El Fna but it is still difficult to get your bearings in the labrynthine streets unless you speak Arabic and can decipher the street names!! However, Oliver was kind enough to arrange for a local boy to take us to Jemaa El Fna on our first outing and he also met us at a pre-arranged time to ensure we didn't get lost.

Marrakech itself is quite an experience and cannot be described to full effect: you simply have to go there to understand! It is incredibly full-on, and Riad Dar Najat provided a peaceful and beautiful haven from the chaotic high-energy of the city.

I couldn't recommend it highly-enough.

Dar Najat was amazing!

from justinstevensmorocco
Dar Najat was amazing! Olivier and Souad made us feel at home from the second we arrived. We are vegetarian and were worried about our food options, but they carefully cooked for us whenever we asked. We had a number of issues with regards to car hire and trip planning and they stepped in and sorted the problems out without any fuss! They helped us with accommodation in Essouirra , told us where the best places to eat were etc. The rooms at Dar Najat are spacious and the air conditioning works really well. In the day time we hung out on the roof and cooled down in the cold jacuzzi. By night the riad transforms into a psychadelic heaven. Truly romantic! We had a great time and brownie the dog rocks!
Thanks guys!
