Historical Traveller Reviews of Riad Al Massarah Hotel

SSSHHHHHH........we need to keep this place a secret!

from lexy_n
WOW....the reviews on here weren't wrong. This hotel is truly fantastic. Having never visited North Africa we were at once overwhelmed by the noise and hustle and bustle on our arrival in the city. Stepping into the Riad was like stepping into another world. Michael could not have been more helpful, friendly and welcoming, and he certainly knows his stuff! His recommendations on places to eat and things to do were tailored around us and were spot on. Our holiday wouldn't have been half as good if it wasn't for his help and advice. It was only a shame that Michel wasn't there for most of our stay.
We stayed in Ambre, which as one of the cheaper rooms I expected to be on the small side. The room was spacious and beautifully decorated. The bathroom which the website states is shared, is now ensuite and is large and very well appointed. Towels were large and FLUFFY and changed daily, beds were comfy and turned down every night, water was provided in the rooms which was very welcome after a day spent out in the sunshine.
Michael and Michel have thought of everything, we were left wanting for nothing. My only regrets are that we didn't have longer there, the hammam looked lovely as did the food, but we didn't get round to either......maybe next time.

The best way to experience Marrakech

from CRHLondon
There’s not much I can really add to all the fantastic reviews of Riad Al Massarah but we had such a wonderful stay I felt I should add something.

My husband and I stayed in this great riad for 6 nights in May. Michel and Michael were the best hosts we could imagine; they really made us feel welcome and gave us great recommendations for restaurants, shopping and places to visit around Marrakech.

Nothing was too much trouble for Michael, Michel and their staff (particularly the multi-skilled Ftah). They all made us feel much more than hotel guests, more like friends. We ate at the riad on the first night and it was so good we ate there again a few days later after a great hammam/massage which left us so chilled-out we couldn’t imagine venturing further afield.

Riad Al Massarah was a great contrast to the excitement and bustle of the medina. We loved the pace of Marrakech but it was wonderful to return to the tranquil peace of the riad and be able to close the door on the rest of the world. It was great to have supper in the riot of colour that some of the restaurants boasted but then return to the calm of the riad. The contemporary style was just our taste and added to the relaxing feel.

We had such a great time we’re hoping to go back with friends next year.

Fantastic boutique, well priced luxury riad

from neb
Michel and Michael are the perfect hosts for a brief Marrakech stay, with great friendly advice on restaurants, shops, bars and general things to do.

The riad itself is tastefully decorated with a great attention to detail. Rooms are spacious with walk-in bathrooms and showers.

Breakfast served in the Riad is a great healthy way to start each day. It is well located, within 15mins walk to the main square and souks.

I highly recommend this place.

Charming Proprietors, Elegant Accommodations

from michaelsmother
What a wonderful place. Michael and Michel really go the extra mile to make your experience a good one. We arrived extremely late in the evening but a taxi was waiting at the airport and took us to meet Michael, patiently waiting in the alley at the edge of the medina. We immediately went to our lovely room and upon unpacking I realized I had left my purse (with passports and wallet of cash) in the taxi. Right then I heard a phone ring and as I was feeling my way around a dark and unfamiliar home, Michael's door opened and in the sweetest British accent he said, "I believe you left something in the cab." It was returned to us with everything intact! How likely is that to happen in the states?

the next morning at a delicious breakfast of fresh fruit, yogurt, crepes, coffee and fresh juice, Michael explained the secrets of the Hammam and I booked a treatment for the next day. he took us on a private tour around the medina and arranged for our dinner reservations at Fondouk (very cool). Michel was equally hospitable taking us shopping to a part of town that specialized in modern fixtures and furnishings, as my husband and I were in Morocco to check out the interior design and architecture. He was wise, wonderful and we enjoyed his company immensely.

Unfortunately, Al massarah did not have accommodations for our entire stay so we had to leave after two nights. Worth noting, the Hammam experience was INCREDIBLE - i highly recommend it. As I recommend full-heartedly Riad Al Massarah for its location, decor, charm, beauty, hospitality and value.

t ask for more...

My boyfriend and I booked a long weekend here as we visited Marrakech for the first time. After doing our research and reading the reviews for the Massarah on Trip Advisor we thought it would be good but could never have imagined just how magical the city was - made even more magical by the hospitality shown to us by Michel and his team.

The Riad itself has been beautifully renovated to accommodate all modern amenities. Minimal, stylish and calm, the riad is the perfect place to relax after a hectic day visiting the souks.

It was like staying with friends - from the moment we arrived and were greeted with mint tea, to the great restaurant suggestions made by Michel. We couldn't recommend the Riad Al Massarah highly enough.

Michael & Darren.

Magic in Marrakech!

from Reeftrekker
My wife and I stayed at the Riad Al Massarah as total Marrakech beginners for an entire week. And boy... what a lucky find this place was! You open the doors to this magic oasis in the middle of crazy Marrakech and you will find yourself on a different planet, so it seems.

Not that the Riad in itself is just amazing, but also the hosts Michel and Michael made us feel totally at home. The entire crew always had a sunny smile on their faces. Especially Momo and Fatima are worth mentioning as the good souls of the Al Massarah. Michel grew on our hearts within no time. He is very knowledgeable and happy to share this with his guests. And there is nothing more relaxing than having a glass of Moroccan wine by the fire in the lounge, listening to the soothing music in the background and having a good talk with Michel...

Fatima is entirely to blame for the few extra pounds on our bellies, since her cooking is the best we've had, while exploring this marvelous city. Delicious breakfasts and mouthwatering tagines for dinner kept us going strong. And let's not forget the afternoon teas, which we enjoyed every evening on the rooftop terrace...

There are so many wonderful things we could say about the Al Massarah... but it would sound like a great story of 1001 Nights. You have to experience it yourself to believe it. Trust us... the Swiss would never lie ;-)

We came as strangers and left as friends. Thanks for everything and we will be back for sure... to your place of pure Magic!

My partner and I stayed here recently with 2 other friends. We could not have had a better time. Michel and the staff made us feel welcome (more like guests in their home - which it is!) than paying visitors. Nothing was too much trouble. Michel would discuss suggestions for touring and eating and then make all the arrangements. He even took us on our first tour around the Souk to help us get our bearings. Fatima and Co would produce lovely breakfasts and then, in the afternoon & evenings, would keep the G&Ts flowing. The Riad has been very stylishly refurbished and truly is an oasis from the hustle and bustle of the Medina. If you have booked the room with the adjacent (but not en-suite) bathroom, don't worry. It is a lovely bathroom; it is immediately adjacent and you can get there discreetly. Don't let it put you off. Another example of how hospitable this Riad is comes from how they reacted when one of our party was ill on the last day. A late check out was no problem and nothing was too much trouble. I strongly recommend this Riad.

Wonderful riad

from citygirlStockholm
Me and my friend stayed here for 3 nights in March. We moved here from Dar Silsila and I have to say, Al Massarah is the superior one in style, decor, space, quality of rooms and bathrooms. Good water pressure in shower. Michel is a wonderful host as is the rest of the staff. We tried the hammam which was nice but you do get bored after about 20 min. The roof terrace had views of the Atlas mountains. I loved that the room was flooded with daylight and Michel really succeded with the (artificial) lighting. I'm comparing with other riads where we stayed where rooms are usually dark and/or poorly lit. Food was good. Overall a first-class riad.

Great Place!

from LHR2007
Once you've decided to stay in the medina and know your budget - this is the place! The place is recently renovated, clean and beautiful. Compared to some other riads it looks a bit minimalistic and is not as green on the inside. Yet it has style and it really depends on your own style preference. The rooms are comfortable and the bathrooms, modern. It was a bit strange to see frosted glass bathroom doors in a Riad but one can't argue. The bathrooms are nice!
Having said all that - I have to admit - I never stayed there, a friend did and he is as positive about the place. Unfortunately the Riad did not have space for my entire visit and not wanting to move Riads, we stayed elsewhere.
The best part of the Riad are the owners! Michel and Michael are extremely helpful (even if you aren't staying with them). They both speak English which is a plus in a french/arabic speaking country. Michel managed to organize a tour to the Atlas mountains for us last minute and it turned out to be lovely. We had lunch at Villa Atlas during the day trip. The place was essentially someone's house but the food turned out to be awesome...pricey for where we were but very good and tons of it!
Knowing Michel was really a plus...he is a great host! The only slightly off colour suggestion was Villa Flore. The food was not as nice as we expected - a bit too much oil in everything and the ambience of teh restaurant was a bit stuffy too. All in all though - Riad Al Massarah with Michel and Michael wins hands down! It's a bit farther away from the Main Square than some other Riads but it is not that far. Infact, it's located in a slightly more peaceful and local area as compared to Derb El Hammam. Be warned though, all Riads are entered through narrow alleyways which sometimes feel a bit dirty and damp... but you get used to get it and it's part of the experience. The Riad's themselves tend to be clean and completely different from the narrow lanes outside.

Beautiful riad, great food, wonderful hospitality

from jdetr0it
My girlfriend and I spent 3 nights at the Massarah and we really didn't want to leave. From the beginning, Michel was incredibly hospitable and went above and beyond to make sure we had the best stay possible. He arranged transport from the airport and brunch was ready for us when we arrived. Throughout our stay he was extremely helpful and gracious. The staff were great, especially Fatima, who not only makes great food, but was kind enough to walk us to our restaurant so we wouldn't get lost (it's not very difficult in the Medina).

The riad itself is beautiful, and all the amenities are new and well appointed. Sunbathing on the rooftop with a view of the atlas mountains and the minarets was definitely a highlight of the trip. There's nothing better than coming back to a cool, clean riad after spending the day in the dusty square and the noise of the souks.
I couldn't think of staying anywhere else in Marrakech. Ditch the new city and stay in the Medina for the full experience, and say hi to Michel for us.
