Historical Traveller Reviews of Le Riad Monceau Hotel

from ashanti67
Had a most wonderful long weekend at this riad. The staff were pleasant and couldn't do enough to assist despite our pigeon French. With its proximity to the main square, and yet it was a quiet haven from the bustle. The food was exquisite and the facilities great. Looking forward to taking our daughters there next year. Thanks for a memorable time in Marrakesh.

A perfect Riad............

from KentApple
Perfect. A beautiful calm & tranquil haven in the craziness that is Marrakech. Location must be the best, so close to Jemaa-el-Fna. Staff do all they can to help. Food is wonderful. We can't wait to find an excuse to return.

disappointed, hurried service

from sgd13
We checked in and within 2 minutes, the lady who is there to help you find your way around the medina, give dinner suggestions, etc left for the night. No one else at the hotel spoke any english. It made for a difficult time in terms of getting directions of food recommendations. I was pretty disappointed because I basically spoke to no one at the hotel my entire stay.
Management Response from RM-management
As manager of Le Riad Monceau, I would like to kindly precise the following :

1/ Le Riad Monceau is a very small house (7 rooms in all) and a charm hotel where a friendly staff are proud to take a great care of each guest ; the reviews on TripAdvisor and on our visitors' book give us the feeling that the way we work is usually appreciated by the travelers who visit us ;
2/ we admit, and one will understand, that we cannot afford to have a 24/24 open desk nor an english speaking staff present all night long in the house. How could we ?
3/ however, our restaurant and bar are open everyday until 11:00 pm or so with a Maitre d'hotel, a cook, a doorman and one of our assistants being there to take care of the guests who have dinner as well as of the late arrivals ; this staff speaks English enough (even if not fluently) to be helpful and friendly ;
4/ the gentleman who wrote this review (coming from South Corea and hardly speaking English himself) spent ONLY ONE night at the riad, with a LATE check-in, an EARLY check-out and a dinner outside…

Of course, it is always a pity to learn that a guest was disappointed with its stay… but the fact is that this traveler had not much time to appreciate the charm and assets of the house (not a word about the hotel itself in the review) … and one could say that, perhaps, in this particular case, a hotel like Le Riad Monceau was just not the right place to stay ?

A beautiful place to stay

from BritandDan
My husband and I are doing a 4 months world tour and we stayed at Riad Monceau for 5 nights at the beginning of november during our 10 days stop in Morocco. All that we had read about it being beautiful and heaven in the bustling of Marrakech appeared to be true. As a matter of fact, it is so peaceful and beautiful and friendly, we found ourselves reluctant to leave the hotel to go around the city.

The service and the hotel were all excellent. The food at the restaurant is probably the best we had in Marrakech. Breakfast is just great and starting our days by the swimming pool, sipping mint tea in the quietness and freshness of the white andalous patio, was a dream. For such a small house (7 rooms), the desk is wonderful (they booked 2 great restaurants and arranged a very nice day trip in the Atlas mounts for us) and the staff are absolutely fantastic. Special thanks to french owner Isabelle and her assistant Kaltoum. We love you.

A great find and a definite yes.

We stayed here 3 nites in mid november.
The location is fantastic , just 100yds away from the main square but as quiet as you could wish for. The food was very good indeed and the staff consistently friendly and helpful. The riad has a very high standard of cleanliness and the roof terrace is a nice place to relax after a few hours touring the city. Our room was small , but really didnt need to be any bigger. We had booked the riad's transfer service and this is a definite must , even as seasoned travellers the airport taxi dept looked hard work.
A couple of watch out points though : our bathroom had a lovely big bath(for 2) with attachment , but if you want a stand up shower you would be disappointed.Secondly - we asked them for restaurant recommendations , got 1 that was very good , but they also booked us into the Riad Lotus - a pretentious , vastly overpriced place in the medina , that we actually walked out of .Riad monceau restarant is very good - worth at least 1 nite staying in.

great place for honeymooners!

Very pleasant place to stay, the most friendly and hospitable staff and of course the food was gorgeous! We will certainly go back and we do recommend it to everyone. Splendid!

A pure gem

from BishopNY
This place was a lovely surprise. It's a very old home that's been restored by a famous french architect who spent a lot of time to take the best out of some of the greatest moroccan palaces and historical riads to create this little gem. The result is just beautiful and charming. The accommodation is superb, providing space, character and style. Facilities are excellent and the staff and service are amongst the best that we have ever experienced.
The meals we had in the intimate restaurant room and in the patio by the swimming pool were perfect and the best of all we had in Marrakech. We loved that it wasn't the bland hotel experience.
And the riad couldn’t be better located : the main sights and attractions of the Medina can all be reached on foot and the famous Jemaa el Fna square is just there, within a stone’s throw from the hotel ; less than 2 minutes’ walk ! So every night we had a spicy tea on the square, staring at the crowd, listening to the music coming from everywhere, and it was kind of magic.

– Fantastic riad

from smith36
We spent three nights here in Sept 2007. We had the Pacha Suite which is one of the best room I have ever seen in my life. The huge bathroom with its private jacuzzi is just as fantastic as in movies and makes you feel as if you were some Califa in an Ali Baba story!!
The Riad was in perfect condition and the detail was incredible - it was like staying at a mini version of the La Bahia palace. The staff (about 9 or 10 people in all for 7 rooms) were excellent and friendly and assisted us with all our requirements for reservations and guides, etc
There is a genuine reason that there are no negative reviews of this riad : it is just perfect in all ways… (as an aside, we went to Le Tobsil for dinner - supposed to be the best Morroccan restaurant in Marrakech according to general guides. It is a set meal served in a nice atmosphere but I thought it was quite overpriced and full of tourists – we had a much better food and service at the restaurant of the Monceau which is more intimate and exclusive).

The perfect Riad in Marrakech

from Nabeel_S
Hidden little gem, tucked in the back alleyways a minute's walk from the Jemma el Fna, Riad Monceau was simply a tranquil escape from the hustle of the square. The location is the best feature being so close to the square, with a mosque nearby and taxis outside the street.

Entering beyond the traditional door, The courtyard was small but clinical and sophisticated, whilst maintaining the traditional tiling and design you expect from a traditional Riad. The centrepiece being a small plunge pool in the centre of the courtyard.

The rooms were well decored, with simple yet stylish furninshings. Not too much in the way of facilities, your basic's such as a fridge, tv, and safe...

The staff were impeccable, even though most were French / Arabic only speakers. Very friendly, and polite and are more than happy to have a chat...

One downside - No views from the roof terrace of the square.

Would recommend to couples / honeymooners to Marrakech.

great for couples.

from tashyFrance
We have just arrived back from this fantastic Riad. This is a great place to stay if you are a couple, we were staying here as part of our honeymoon.
The Riad is very clean. The staff are wonderful and very friendly.
The rooms are fantastic with lots of little touches such as rose petals and chocolates plus fresh fruit.
Breakfast was very nice and the meals in the restaurant were great.
This was our first trip to Marrakesh and it was a culture shock to us at first, especially when we had to follow the porter down the small crowded alleyways to the Riad, but as soon as we stepped behind the door it was like being in a completely different world.
This Riad is worthy of its 5 stars. The owners should be proud of what they have achieved.
We hope to stay here again. Thank you for a great time.
Steve & Jan Sharp.
