Historical Traveller Reviews of Hotel El Andalous

Halfway Hotel

from Halfway
Arrived 2100hrs,was pleasantly greeted, shown to room by a friendly little man,I had read some of the reviews and was a bit worried, no need ,the room was fine,I was alone and the room had two queen size beds, was ok furnished but could have done with a revamp, bit tired but ok for the price I had given, around 40 english pounds per night,I would have been miffed if I had given the standard room rate CA 100 pounds per night, nice bathroom with what you need but the toilet was placed against the corridor wall and back to back with my neighbours????,its true that the walls are very thin! awoke in the morning to find I had a room with a great view of the pool and outside dining/bar area, pool cleaned every day and used alot by kids ,grown ups ,and by this one guy in particular,Negro, good looking,6 foot 2 inches tall 85kg,shoulders like Arne,Im 5ft 8 ,110kg ,shoulders like a small wine glass, this guy did 100 laps every single day,I cant swim ,did I care!!,anyway, breakfast was fine,2.5stars ,cleaning in the rooms could have been more thorough ,I found that as usual ,a couple of dollars left on the pillow ensured clean sheets every day , which was not the norm ,food outdoors was good ,Bar was good but could be considered a wee bit pricey, good promotions on the beers, also on whiskys, ask, great wee supermarked just round the corner, leave hotel turn left and left again cross over to the right hand sidewalk and proceed 300 yards, cross main road and go up allyway on left hand side off PianoBar, 3 shops, one sells smokes,#2 has most things and #3 is the busiest liquor store Ive ever seen, good prices and honest service in all 3 shops, same prices no matter who served you, staff friendly enough,no complaints,BEWARE TAXI DRIVERS:

Faded but friendly

from Buntman
This must have been a very grand hotel when it was built. It's now a case of faded glory, from the weather beaten balconies to the chipped patio tiles around the pool.

However, it still has a lot going for it.

The situation is excellent - completely surrounded by trees, it's easy to forget that you're in the heart of Marrakech and just a few minutes' walk to the Djemaa El Fna. The pool is certainly big enough to keep an 11 year old and her friends very happy and the poolside snack bar offers a good choice of kebabs and snack lunches for those days when you leave exploring to the afternoon.

The buffet in the evening is adequate and fairly priced, although you wouldn't want to go there every night. There's also a more trendy gastro-bar downstairs. ( More pricey but the food is excellent.)

The rooms are a good size, clean and the cleaners are conscientious. Each room has a little balcony. No fridges though!

At the time of our visit (October) one receptionist spoke perfect English and the rest of the staff had varying degrees of fluency. A bit of French on your part won't go amiss. We reported a couple of minor problems and they were resolved instantly. The hotel offers excusions through a roster of drivers ( some of whom will arrange guides) so it's easy to get out and about.

One or two of the staff are a bit grumpy. The pool attendant upset a few people with his over-zealous collection of towels; but the majority seem to enjoy their work and want you to enjoy your holiday.

My two top tips:

There's a dingy little office called a "Business Centre". If you get the key to this from the "telephone operator", you can access your emails and surf the net to your heart's content.

Pull the door of your room firmly shut ! If you don't , the door alarm will go off. Each new new influx of guests is announced by a chorus of door alarms. If this is the sort of thing that would bother you, you're probably better off at a more formal ( but less relaxed) hotel.

Great, despite previous reviews

from sanditaylor
I was a little bit apprehensive because of some of the previous reviews, but we found the service to be excellent!
The rooms were spacious and clean, the pool/dining area was beautiful, and the day spa is very highly recommended and reasonably priced.
We spent 3 days here and found all the staff to be very courteous and willing to help (and speak very good English!)

What a place!!

from danton
We asked for a low floor and were put on the 5th. We asked for a 'no smoking' room and the bed stank of smoke.
The towels were grey and hard.
The food really was indescribable!! Never have we had such a poor display offered whilst being in an Arab country. Usually, they are magnificent.
We spent most of our time eating out and so with the constant tipping and being subjected to blatant dishonesty in this hotel, it cost a lot more money than it should have done.
One good thing, the beds were clean, but the blankets were awful!

Never again!!

Great pool, 1 star Hotel bed

from keikot
I have very mixed feeling about this hotel. Great location, green and quiet, best area of Marrakech. Pool and garden are big and beautiful. My room was clean and nice size with a patio but the mattress was so soft like 1 star hotel. If you have a back problem you are in trouble.
Breakfast was OK. And the problem is the hotel people. They will be fine with the French speaking people but not for the English speaking tourists. Their English is very poor.
Since I loved the environment and I had very good rate from the Internet, I felt it was an OK deal. I guess not too many hotels in Marrakech are perfect.

Great rooms shame about the rest

First - taxis from airport a rip off - they ignore the fixed price sign and charge 100DH - even to the El Andalous which is only 2 km from airport. The drivers are rude and a disgrace compared to very many polite Moroccans we encountered over the week we stayed. I go so fed up I took the bus (20DH).

Rooms are nice with good AC/TV/balcony but no fridge.

Hotel food - very average and restaurant feels like a canteen. Although we paid for evening meals, we ate out.

Good restaurant RDV - turn left and left again - at end of road - french food, reasonable prices and great service. Superb desserts.

Small supermarket for water etc just behind this restaurant.

Pool guy very aggressive on tips - separately rude to both my wife and 12 year old son! Pool is unbearably cold.

No towels in room after clean - had to phone for a towel.

Service in outside restaurant slow - forgot coffee in a three item drinks order and overcharged for ice creams.

They advertise a tennis court - it is covered with an empty tent and can't be used - took our rackets - a waste of time.

This is a nice hotel that is badly in need of some good management.

TIP - get into a taxi outside hotel to return to airport and simply pay 60DH - ignore protestations - a good price for such a short trip.

Nice place to stay, despite the staff

from Stewable
In common with other reviewers, the main buffet restaurant is very hit and miss (and strangely, with more flies than the exterior restaurants).

Very good pool and garden with reasonably priced dining area.

Room comfortable and with a balcony to watch the local excitement (a police car flagging down a donkey cart - speeding perhaps)

pretty good

from daffy33
Pleasantly surprised by the El Andalous, it's a short (slightly hair raising) taxi ride from Menara airport; and not too far from the Medina etc. on foot. The hotel was clean enough & the staff were quite helpful - most spoke English, if your French is not up to scratch.A buffet breakfast was on offer each morning, which was o.k but limited.
Overall I would recommend El Andalous, especially for the price ! - not sure I would return to Morroco though .......

Enjoyable stay

from BunnyFamily
We were a bit dubious having read some of the hotel reviews. However we were delighted with the El Andalous, the bedroom was large and very clean with a good air conditioning system, and a large bathroom. The pool and poolside bar were always staffed and very clean. The spa offered a selection of wonderful beauty treatments at very reasonable prices. The breakfast offered a large choice as did the lunchtime menu and the portions were very generous. Our only disappointment was the Tapas Bar downstairs which was a terrible experience, the staff were indifferent and the food mediocre. The staff otherwise were always helpful and if you are able to speak French they are delighted, however realising we were English they were happy to speak English and did not have a problem with that at all, as was previously suggested by other reviewers (new staff perhaps). We would definately pay a return visit to the El Andalous if were back in Marrakech.

Excellent hotel, great food and close to the medina

from MacKiwi
We were most impressed with this hotel, it is more a resort hotel rather than a regular tourist hotel. We stayed over New Year's Eve and New Year's Day and found the staff very happy and friendly, even though the hotel was fully booked and there were lots of people around.

Yes It helps if you speak a few words in French, but we didn't have any problems if we spoke to the staff in English either.

The room we had was a good size with a balcony and a separate toilet room and bathroom. The only problems we had was that the water cycled hot/cold in the shower and that it was noisy from the bar.

The bar prices were very reasonable and there is a small grocery store about 10 mins walk away from the hotel, with a liquor store next door (both are situated at the bottom of an apartment building - the staff gave us good directions in both French and English).

Djemma el F'na Square is about 15 minutes pleasant walk from the hotel, not difficult to locate. There are plenty of restaurant options there, be prepared that the more reasonably priced ones will be French or Arabic speaking only. We also had the buffet at the hotel, this was excellent with very high quality Moroccan food with lots of variety for dinner and similarly lots of choices for breakfast with Western and local foods to try.

I would definitely choose to stay here again if visiting Marrakesh.
