Historical Traveller Reviews of Dar Eliane Hotel

beautiful riad but freezing cold

from Jasby
We stayed at Dar Eliane in december. The riad has been beautifully renovated with attention to detail. The food is delicious and is good value.
We were in a downstairs room - rather dark and no privacy. There was a very bad smell early in the morning, I think it came up the drain in the shower. The heating, though advertised, was out of order so we were freezing cold.
The riad is in a dangerous area. Taxi drivers don't want to take you there. One driver left us with some youths who then threatened and abused us. I would not recommend this riad to women travellers.
Management Response from dareliane
Thank you for your lovely comments about our house. The Dar Eliane has been renovated to a very high standard and offers excellent value for money. The riad is ideally situated, with friendly and helpful staff and a wonderful choice of delicious food.

We are so sorry you had a smell coming from the drain in your shower, we would have liked to of known this whilst you were at the Dar Eliane then we would have dealt swiftly with the issue.

We have had many female guests stay at the Dar Eliane from very the young to mature, from lone travellers to hen parties. They have never been intimidated or abused. I am sure the residents of the Medina will be extremely shocked to hear what happened to you.

We know the riad is not in a unsafe area. We understand that you got lost on several occasions which is unfortunate. We provided you with a card to show to taxi drivers giving the riads address, as all riads do as a matter of course. Every taxi company in Marrakech knows where Azbezt is, it is not a dangerous area by any stretch of imagination. After the first time of being lost, Badre, the manager asked why you did not call him on the house phone or his mobile to come and get you.

The riad has reversible air conditioning for heating or cooling and sometimes needs to be reset to get the heating working. If you had asked at the time, our staff would gladly have assisted you.

We are sorry that you had a few issues when you were staying in Marrakech. We’ve not had any complaints about the area. We can only apologise and would like to reassure you that we always aim to offer a very high standard of accommodation in a beautiful city.

Fantastic time

from Mel2301
We stayed at the Dar Eliane for a long weekend and had a fantastic time.
The Medina is full of life and a brilliant place to shop and sight see, but when we got back to the riad it was lovely to kick our shoes off and be pampered. The room we had was very nice and we spent a lot of time on the terrace and the way the staff looked after us was second to none.

awful experience

from laura819
my experience of the dar eliane was not a pleasant one! I spoke to the owner,Tracy and requested 'Jawhara' room on the 1st floor as i suffer from claustraphobia and didnt want a ground floor room. The trouble started with the taxi the riad had arranged. We sat on the side of the motorway for 15 minutes whilst the driver screamed into his phone and were then told we had to return to the airport.
On arrival we were told we couldnt have the rrom we requested as 'tourists' had arrived a day earlier then us. regardless of the fact that i had booked the room. No apologies were made. The room we were given was small, dark and dismal. There was no daylight in it at all. should you want a glimmer of light i had to open the shutters which resulted in everyone in the courtyard and walking past could see directly into our room and bathroom. We were laying in bed whilst guests were on the other side of the window eating breakfast.Every noise could be heard, you could even see the toilet from the courtyard. and with no bathroom door that resulted in no privacy whatsoever!
On the second night the tap sprung a rather big leak. At 3am my partner was up trying to fix it. in the end we wrapped towels around the tap and listened to dripping for the rest of the night. By the morning the water had flooded the bedroom, including my personal belongings. Again, no apologies!
I had an awful experience in this riad. I was offered a bottle of wine to compensate. and once again told ' the tourists did arrive the day before us!?!?! It seems to me we got the worse room in the riad for the same price as the others.
The riad is to far from the main square. Hardly any taxi drivers know of it and if they do can only drive halfway there. Which left us wandering around dark narrow streets late at night.
I highly recommend you dont stay at this riad. I found the staff extremley unproffessional and was made to feel like all the problems were my fault. We did look at moving to another riad. Unfortuantly for us they were all fully booked but id recommend paying an extra 20 pounds a night for a nicer, professional, happier, better located riad than this one!

Kindness beyond all expectation

from Rosalyn62
we arrived at Dar Eliane at Eid El Kebir, equivalent to christmas day, everything was closed and there was a rainstorm. The staff who were in the middle of their celebrations still provided food and welcome although officially not serving dinner that night. We felt so cared for. It just got better and better. The rooms are beautiful, Badre and Bouchra so attentive and warm hearted. Take Badre's advice and let him come and meet you if you get lost or arrive back late at night it is easy to get disorientated. The riad is just around the corner from the souks yet in a quiet, non touristy neighbourhood. We had lovely home cooked food and tasty breakfasts with something different every morning. The fact that thre are only four rooms make this an intimate and homely place to stay. The birds arrive every morning and fill the air with their song. What more could you want? If you want a real taste of the medina, ordinary life as well as the tourist experience we reccommend Dar Eliane.

What a fantastic place!!!

from cutchi
I've always wanted to stay in a riad and was thrilled with this one!
We booked direct and the owner Tracy could not have been more helpful. She arranged a taxi to pick us up from the airport and her manager Badre met us in the local square to guide us through the alleyways to the riad.
What a lovely man, nothing was too much trouble for him and his beautiful assistant Bushra. We had arranged to have a meal there the first evening and it was served by Badre in the private dining room - fantastic Morroccan 3 course meal with great local wine for a total of 50 euros for two! Spacious rooms, lovely breakfasts served in the central courtyard at whatever time we got up, wine or beer anytime if we requested it.
The other guests were delightful and friendly and we all had another wonderful meal there together before we left.
We were amazed at the tranquility of the riad, a peaceful and beautiful oasis in the middle of the noise and bustle.
I would recommend booking one of the upstairs rooms if possible and do remember that this is in the heart of the Medina which may not be suitable for the faint-hearted! That said we had no problems except for finding our way around and the local people were friendly and helpful. A real experience and one we could totally recommend to anyone who wants to get away from the sterile hotel/escorted tour scenario.
Many thanks again to Badre and Bushra who made our stay special!!

Oasis of Calm in the mania of the Medina

from LoinerLoiner
Our stay at this Riad was really good.
In all honesty, Marrakesh was a tad too hectic for us, but Dar Eliane was an oasis of calm.
The standard of the accommodation is good, probably equivalent to an top-end B&B in the UK, rather than hotel.

The staff could not have been more helpful - they collected us from the little square where the taxi from the airport stopped. Be aware that this Riad is really in the heart of the Medina - you will be dragging your stuff through the tiny, narrow lanes. The Riad is down a dark little alleyway, but if you can get past the initial assault on your senses, the homely welcome of Dar Eliane will be worth it.

We thoroughly recommend eating here during your stay. The salads and tagines were better than a very expensive restaurant that is recommended in all the guides.

Brilliant value for money.

A cut above the rest

from lilcakesLondon
We had an absolutely fantastic time during our visit to Marrakesh - made all the better by the standard and excellence of the Dar Eliane.
Bader and the staff were wonderful and nothing was too much trouble. The Dar itself is a cut above any of the others we seen and the renovation works and attention to detail were amazing.

Little oasis away from the bustle of Magical Marrakech

from gem162001
I booked this Riad through a company called Hip Marrakech, I spoke directly with amanda from this company who was very helpful. I paid £50 for a room with a double and a twin for me and my mom. The riad, as with most, is located down a dark smelly alleyway in the thick of things in the middle of the souks. For my first time to marrakech this was a lil scary at first but totally worth the trouble to be amongst the actual living and working people of this enchanting city. Once you get your bearings it's a 10 minute walk to the main square. The actual Riad itself is totally gorgeous, the rooms are lovely and spotless. The staff are there to help you whenever you need it and the manager Badre actually stays at the Riad so is on hand for any problems... not that we had any apart from getting lost and even then he came and met us and accompanied us home. There is a roof top terrace which is gorgeous and perfect for a spot of sunbathing, the breakfast varies, we had pancakes, croissants and different breads with jams, which are served by the very helpful bouchera any time you require. I would defintely go back there for another visit, it's definitely worth finding your way through the souks to this beautifully chic and delightful Riad.

The only thing I can say which might put some people off is that you have to be pretty relaxed and easy going to stay there as there are no keys allocated, just bolts on doors meaning the cleaner and whoever can go in while you're out, the front door is often open too but this didn't put me off personally it just felt friendly and I always felt safe as there was always a member or a few members of staff at the Riad at all times.
