Excellent choice!

The hotel is located in a large, quiet garden one foot minute away from the railway station, just across a lively square. The 3-storey hotel offers plain but adequate, if a little worn and smallish, rooms at very attractive rates. Four 1st floor rooms have large terraces facing the beautiful garden, overlooking the well-kept and large pool. This is a typical "railway" hotel catering mostly to travellers who stay one night only, while the terrace rooms are normally given to guests who stay for longer periods. In spite of the hotel's proximity to the railway station not a sound was heard - there aren't many trains any way. There is a pleasant restaurant offering fixed 3-course meals at modest prices, and a very lively bar opening out to the garden and the pool - a favourite of the local top-end Shady Ladied and their pimps, who otherwise bother noone. Even if the surroundings may seem a bit dubious it is very safe, as is Fez in general - so enjoy your stay at this very pleasant hotel.

Top Local Tips for Fez

Fes from above Ask a taxi driver to take you to a vantage point to view the city from above. It's a wonderful spectacle!

The Medina - use a guide We almost never take organized tours and much prefer to walk by ourselves, but we had a guide take us through the Medina and - partly because we had a wonderful guy, but partly on general principles, too - we would very strongly recommend this; we would have missed so much doing it by ourselves. Of course any guide is going to take you to shop at places where he has connections, but if not interested you can "just say no". And in any event, enjoy the game: "come in madam - just looking, no buy", then "I give you very good price" etc, then the haggling. It's actually fun so long as you know what you can afford to spend and don't get swept into paying more The key to a reasonable price (which in some places can be 70-75% and more off the original offer) is being prepared to walk out wthout the item; you won't do as well if the seller knows you've just got to have it.

shopping in the souk( medina) Fes used to be a real hassle. It doesn't need to be now. Being pleasant and polite to everyone - even when one feels a bit hassled - works with almost everyone. We found the whole experience very friendly, and that is not something I have ever found before. Smile, smile, smile!!
