Absolutely perfect!

My wife and I spent our honeymoon here and could not have asked for a better hotel. The room was understated and beautiful with an amazing view of the turquoise ocean from our balcony. We had not encountered such excellent standards of service before and the staff are all very attentive without being intrusive. The special extras you receive as part of the honeymoon package were great too. We arrived to find a platter of tropical fruit and a bottle of champagne on ice in the room and had a special meal arranged for us one evening in the plantation restaurant. The water sports are great and we both enjoyed the waterskiing and sailing which are all included in the price.

Highly recommended!

Perfect Honeymoon

We have travelled to many hotels for business and leisure reasons.

Afetr carefully checking in Trip Advisor, we decided this one for our honey moon. We both work in advertising and the best compliment, it is that the whole place is better than the advertising.

The service is excellent, but you never feel overwhelmed. We were 8 days. some of them a little bit windy, but fully avoidable being by the Yatcht Club beach chairs. Cristal clear water, beatiful sand colour and magic reefs in the short distance.

Food of excellent level. Wine a little bit over priced but justified because of distance.Details carefully looked after. Excellent service in all languages and trying hard (we are from Spain) in Spanish.

It is the perfect script for far beaches in the Indian Ocean with love and luxury.

Hotel shop prices in line with the island.

Many activities to be done and excursions in case you feel dinamic. We mostly loaf around the hotel and beaches and took full advantage of everything it offered, including the Spa.

Visited The Residence for our honeymoon in October 2003. A beautiful hotel with excellent service, set on a perfect beach. We have stayed in luxury hotels around the world, and this hotel was our favorite. Highly recommended. If you do stay at The Residence, I would also suggest an evening visit to one of the restaurants in the nearby Le Touessrok hotel, which the concierge will be happy to arrange for you.

We have experienced many excellent hotels around the world and I would class this as one of the best. Considering its size it is extremely well run and scores highly in most categories. Location and ambience is excellent, food extremely good and varied, and accommodation (we opted for an ocean front room) above average, even for a resort hotel. The staff are all well trained and service levels are high-similar to the standards in Far Eastern hotels.

Comments about the cost of beverages is justified-wine is overpriced. Also I believe more comfortable beach chairs would be more in keeping with the overall class of this hotel. Also if you object to regular weddings taking place at your holiday resort, then this hotel is not for you. However, these are minor points and do not detract from an excellent rating overall.

Having stayed in Four Seasons, Taj etc hotels I would rank the Residence amongst these

One final word of advice-do not expect wall to wall sunshine, even in October. It can rain and some days may be cloudy. It seemed to be windy most days, with people often off the beach by 4pm. However, you still get a lot of sun for your money

Wonderful honeymoon

My wife and I just returned from a two week stay at The Residence for our honeymoon, and I wanted to share what a wonderful time we both had.
I have to disagree with the reviewer who claimed it was like a Disney resort - this hotel is pure elegance. From the moment you arrive you are treated like royalty. We were given iced tea and refreshing cool towels, then taken to our room where we checked in. As it was our honeymoon there was a fresh fruit basket and champagne on arrival. The personal butler was great - felt a little odd asking him to do things for us, but the rose petal baths he ran were fabulous.
The food is sublime. The Dining Room seems a little more elegant, with the Plantation being great for themed buffets - Seafood, African and Mexican were all sampled!
Whilst I agree the prices are high for drinks and lunch, one can walk 5 mins to Belle Mare village and get a Mauritian curry / rice / fish for a few pounds. My wife and I also bought wine from the supermarket for a fraction of the hotel price and took back to the room.
Watersports, Spa, pool...all first class. The fragrant smell of ylang ylang being wafted through the air prompted us buy some spray for our flat to remind us of the wonderful time we had.

Outstanding Honeymoon

As per most other reviews on this hotel, the facilities and food are outstanding. From the minute you arrive you are waited on hand and foot in the incredible surroundings of the hotel. Everything is spotless. The rooms are outstanding - we had the ocean view room and was worth every bit extra as the views were amazing. The main bedroom is huge and we had fresh flowers, fruit and champagne on ice waiting for us. The bathroom is also amazing although we did have 1 day of hot water issues where there wasn't any! My wife had several rose petal baths run by the room butler - who was available any time you needed him and was extremely discreet. The pool side was excellent as were the loungers on the beach. You just needed to stop by a lounger and within seconds a member of staff would lay you a towel down and bring some water for you. Some fresh fruit was also brought round at 11am each day to wet your appetite. The food was excellent. We preferred the Dining Room to the Plantation as there was slightly more choice if you did not fancy the menu of the day. The only real problem was the drink! This is expensive. Local Phoenix beer is reasonably priced but a bottle of south african wine will set you back £23 and this is the cheapest. Champagne by the glass is £10 each so be prepared for that! Be also careful of the lunch menu. A panini and chips will set you back £10 - however by the end of the holiday we really didn't mind as we were having such a good time. The beech is amazing as are the water sports - tuition for free on most things. We did some horse riding which was great fun although it was in front of the adjoining hotel which has a much worse beach than the Residence's! We did venture out of the hotel once to see the Pampelmouse Tropical Gradens - these were great and we wish we'd have stayed longer but we went to the capital - Port Louis. Personally this was a mistake - we ventured to the market and found that as soon as the taxi driver left us we were hounded non-stop. This made us feel very uncomfortable and we left shortly. The weather ( 2 weeks from 10th September ) was varied with a constand trade wind. It is windy at this time - do not expect a light breeze! There were a clouds on most days but any rain would only last 20-30 minutes and it was never cold. When the sun came out this is very hot and you will burn in 10 minutes as I proved!! The wind can hide the heat very well. Overall the honeymoon was fantastic and I would recommend this hotel very highly

just arrived from a week at the residence hotel in mauritius. it has been one of the best experiences my wife and i ever had. everything is excellent,from our arrival til our departure.

rooms are spacious and comfortable and the room service it is outstanding. our evening butler, named jogoo, was very efficient and kind. it has prepared to my wife an unbelievable bath foams everyday. and if you have to book for whatever he did for us.facilities are excellent:gym well equiped, spa superb, and pool perfect.

food was awsome.their french chef knows what he is doing. i specially recomend the desserts(what a experience!!!!). spa treatments were out of this world.we did two treatments and were absolutely relaxing and well done.

i recomend this hotel to everyone

A fabulous hotel for our honeymmon

We loved the residence. It is a beautiful hotel, the staff are very friendly, curtious and helpful. The rooms, we booked an ocean view were fab, spacious and luxurious. The thought of a personnal butler actually put us off a little before arriving but they were very discreate and you could call upon their services as often or as little as you want. The petal filled bath was a really nice touch and I must admit we did have a few of those. The restaurants were great. We were really impressed by the standard of the food and my husband enjoyed the best lamb dish he had ever had. The seafood buffet is a must, we really enjoyed it. The food was just amazing. We also went to an african evening and the food there was equally as good. The waterskiing lessons were very good and we played tennis everyday - sometimes twice. The courts were of an excellent standard. We both enjoyed the massages.
As a previous reviewer has mentioned - watch out for the wine and alcohol prices, they are steep and in our opinion unreasonable, but that is our only gripe. We bought a bottle of champaign from mauritius airport and it cost us about £30, in the hotel, exactly the same bottle would have cost us over a £100!
We would recommend the hotel, the rooms, food and beach are fab. A very relaxing honeymoon.

Been once, been twice, going again!

My family spent Christmas & New Year at The Residence Jan 2003 and returned Jan 2004 in anticipation of another wonderful holiday having enjoyed our previous visit so much. Unfortunately, our youngest son was unwell on arrival in Mauritius and we subsequently learnt that he has luekemia and so we had to leave Mauritius urgently. The management (and guests) were all so helpful and considerate to us all that inspite of our visit being curtailed we happily look forward to returning to The Residence with young Ted now in much better health. The Residence is a wonderful family hotel over the Christmas period - best we've experienced anywhere. We've 3 boys (now 8,6 and 4) and we know they will thoroughly enjoy the kids club activities, beach, lovely pools and everything else about their holiday. In addition, the clinic at Curepipe has wonderful paediatricians at hand should they be required - a valuable reassurance for any young family on their travels! With the children taken care of the service, food, spa and general level of service and attention leaves little to chance. Great babysitting service too! For us The Residence is tops!

Top Local Tips for Mauritius

Factory Designer Shops You can buy great designer clothes at low prices at some of the Factory Shop outlets. I bought some Paul and Shark and Prada stuff. All looks and feels genuine stuff to me. An owner told me that all the big names have clothes made on the island and locals are allowed to sell any line over runs etc in these factory shops. Beware however of smaller retail outlets that have all the usual low quality copy stuff.

Private Dining Make a point of requesting a private dining experience during your stay. the staff make a great job of spoiling you for the night!

Restaurants Most hotels force you to go half board to keep you in the resort. Other hotels offer great food and it's well worth eating out. Also, the hotels charge European prices which are heavily inflated, yet local restaurants are a fraction of the price. To give you an idea, a great meal for 2 with wine in a top hotel costs the same amount as a months wages for a waiter in a Mauritian hotel. The locals eat at good restaurants outside the hotels that are much cheaper.
