Historical Traveller Reviews of The Sands Resort Hotel

Absolutely Brilliant!!!

from DettiePlett
Bernie Iaccarino & Family enjoyed 8 days at The Sands Resort & Spa and it was absolutely brilliant. The service was out of this world, from the restaurant to the bar, to the beach or around the pool, we were looked after at every chance. The food was amazing! Every night you had something different, and there were so many different deserts, you just had to try them all. We also took full advantage of the spa, and the girls there did a magnificent job. The one day we
had massages around the pool as they gave a free demonstration, terrific!!! The hotel was not that expensive, rather exchange your money at an atm or exchange control as the rate given by the hotel is very low. But they advise you to rather exchange elsewhere. The staff are extremely friendly and helpful. They offer most water sports and are very helpful in this regard. The only down side of this holiday was that it was pretty windy and the weather was not that good. Although we still managed to have an awesome time, and on our good days we did the water sports. Otherwise you can hire a bicycle and go to the little town where there are a few shops that sell some very nice clothing and souvenirs. The rooms are very comfortable, and rather big with a nice big bathroom. The room service is unbelievable. Its the quickest I've ever known room service.Overall, a fantastic holiday and compliments to the management and staff. If you looking to be spoilt and to just relax, then The Sands is the place for you. It has entertainment every night, but no disco so for young teenagers it may be boring!!! Although there were also young couples there. We would definetly recommend The Sands and would certainly go back one day should we return to Mauritius!!

Best Kept Secret

from AbigailShropshire
The Sands must be one of the best kept secrets in Mauritius being in only a handful of British brochures. We spent ten days there at the end of May - no cyclones, no crowds and still warm enough in an evening not to need a cover up. We are in total agreement with all the previous positive reviews, Its location is undoubtedly the best on the west coast overlooking both the sea and the mountains, the hotel has a small intimate feel & the staff could not have been more friendly and helpful. The food is good value for money and deffinately pay the supplement to try the giant prawns in Spices restaurant. We enjoyed the walk up the beach to both Wolmar and Flic en Flac. We had no problem changing travellers cheques at reception although as in most hotels the exchange rate was not the best. We hired a car to go over to the East coast and since they drive on the left found driving fine except for keeping a look out for stray dogs. We had a taxi on two other days to see Port Louis (go on a Saturday and miss the traffic), the north and west. When visiting the interior take an umbrella there is a reason for all that lushness! Have lunch at Le Chamarel for the amazing views and at the Botanic Gardens at Pamplemousse for just 100 rupee have a personal guide.

nice small hotel

from westmorland
Stayed here for 2 weeks May 2007, very nice small hotel, only 92 rooms all sea facing with furnished balconies. All the rooms are the same, ours had a king size bed, sofa + chair very large well equiped bathrooms, full size bath + spacious separate shower, separate toilet and wardrobe cum dressing room, with electronic safe. Rooms are well maintained with efficient A/C. Bathrobes were supplied. Plentiful supply of tea/coffee, replenished twice daily. Rooms were also servcied twice a day.
Good selection of FREE activities, both land and water sports, also sauna and steam room. Good small gym= excellent personal trainer- my thanks to Jean Philippe for all his help in trying to get me into shape-
Very good service from staff, refreshing towels brought round the beach, and glasses cleaned.
The evening meal alternated between buffet and table d'hote, food plentiful, (sometimes not very inspiring )
The beach is in our opinion the best bit of this beach- better than Hilton and Sugar Beach
We really enjoyed our stay here, however, iff I wanted to be really 'picky' I could find a few negative things:

Sometimes our room didn't get its 1st service until 3.30pm

Very few English speaking channels on th TV

Cost of drinks really high- 600% mark up on supermarket prices

On table d'hote evenings the service was really slow- we waited 25 mins for our dessert to arrive- Not I think the fault of the waiting staff- more the fault of the Kitchen staff!

It is over 1 km to the nearest bus stop either along the beach or the road- not good if you aren't fit. Nearest shops are 3 km away

However we feel the positives out weigh the negatives.

beautiful setting

from roxyroxy
This was booked by my mother from Australia,it was a sight unseen deal from the newspaper. Well a very good choice it was. A smallish hotel by most standards. Very well kept with rooms on three levels and all with a sea view, some slightly blocked by the palm leaves waving, but we got over that huge hurdle.A lovely first impression as the reception leads straight out to the infinity pool which gives you fantastic views over the bay to the amazing mountains in the background.Having walked up the beach we had the best bit of beach which was groomed each day.We were told the hotel was full, if this was the case I dont know what they did with the guests all day. The pool was empty with the profusion of sunloungers extending to the beach. You might find it hard to get an umbrella for shade but there are enough palm trees about.
Very attentive service during the day, includes complimentary pizza at lunch times while the nice waiter would clean your sun glasses for you! Good prompt smiling service from all the bar staff.
We used the spa a fair bit between us, massages, facials, pedicure, reflexology all very good and not too over the top price wise.It was all very unhurried and relaxing.
Its hard to find a moan really ,but we were both phoned at a reasonably late hour,I mean woken up, to be asked had we ordered room service. To which the answer was "no" but there was no apology which I found annoying don't like being woken up for nothing. Also my mother had trouble changing money at reception. She was told that they didn't have any money, this at about 1pm, and that she should try tomorrow.Well the next day it took half an hour to find the money and at least four people to count it, not what you expect.
The food was ok, not fantastic have had a lot better especially the deserts, which looked and sounded great but were vary disappointing, just get the crepe man in from breakfast! We did try the a la carte "spices" restaurant which was amazing. We had the prawn special menu, I have never had such huge shellfish and the taste was out of this world, worth every penny.
I was a bit worried that we would be surrounded by honeymoon couples but it was all quite normal really. Not many kids thankfully so a very peaceful relaxing holiday in a beautiful place with lovely people.

Absolutely Brilliant

from CSR073
What an absolutely brilliant place and an excellent experience. From the time we checked in, until the time we left, we had nothing but supreme service from all hotel staff from Guest Relations, to Bar Staff and Resteraunt staff. They couldn't do enough for you.

Unlike the previous reviewer, and I was at the Sands for two weeks, I would never class seaweed or coral as debris!! In the time that I was there that was the only 'debris' I saw on the beach and the staff were there cleaning that up. In relation to the beach - it is clearly the best beach on that section of coast at Wolmar.

The best thing about The Sands though is it's size. We considered other hotels along that stretch at Wolmar and we were so glad we made this selection as the other looked completely oversized and crowded.

We loved this hotel and it is definitely the one we will go back to when we go back to Mauritius.

I am a regular visitor to Mauritius and have always had nothng but positive praise for the hotels and indeed the island resort. The Sands however was a bitter disappointment, and with just a little more effort from the management it could have been so much better. There is most definitely a hygeine problem - twice I was served putrid fruit juice! I have never ever had a tummy upset while in Mauritius, but I did this time, on two occassions. The food was OK, but had a very odd aftertaste. Debris washed up on the beach was just left, sun beds were never cleared and so raking the beach to prevent sand flies from hatching was not possible. I brought my many concerns to the attention of the management who tried their best to sort out the problems, unfortunately their best was not good enough, although they did cover the breakfast pastries after I complained they were left uncovered for many hours attracting flying insects and birds.
There is room for so much improvement at this hotel and at the present time it does not deserve the four star rating it has.

Awesome Honeymoon

from prejoh
South Africa, Plettenberg Bay
Really wanted a romantic location for my wife and I. Will be honest and say I was seriously nervous whilst driving to the hotel because you pass grand hotels like the Hilton and Taj with their massive entrances.

But thank goodness, the Sands Resort, with its relatively small entrance still took our breath away. Personally I feel the view over the ocean is more beautiful at the Sands Resort than at the other hotels along the coast of Flic and Flac. Not only do you get to look out towards the open sea on the right but to the left of the hotel is a little bay with a mountain on the other side.

The hotel really caters well for couples, most of the table arrangements are for two and there were hardly any children.

We choose half board basis and found that it was more than enough food. The meals are really large and at lunch time you are more peckish than hungry. Pizzas were really good value for money and was easy to share with my wife. They charged us R70 for the pizza and we could have it delivered anywhere, even the beach.
Another thing that we enjoyed was that due to an older crowd we hardly ever had to wait to use any water equipment.
One criticism is that for South Africans the hotel's drinks are quite expensive, Coke is R30 (300ml) and R20 (500ml) for water. But luckily a little cafe is not to far away were you can buy cooldrinks and beers a lot cheaper and store them in your hotel fridge. The hotel room and bathroom were spacious and all hotel rooms have sea views.
Overall my wife and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The hotel ended up being more than we had expected. Before the honeymoon I searched for hotels in Mozambique, Zanzibar, Kenya and Mauritius and so glad we choose the Sands, the hotel was excellent value for money but still felt top class.

Fabulous relaxing break

from norfolk_travels
My wife and I have just returned from a week's break over new year at The Sands Resort. Booked as a result of reading the reviews on this page, the hotel more than lived up to expectations. The staff are welcoming and helpful - but not too much "in your face". Our room was spotlessly clean, spacious and had a lovely view (it was classed as deluxe). If you want an early night, it would be worth asking for a room away from the bar area where there is live music until 2330 every day. The food in the buffet restaurant was plentiful and had something for everyone if you looked hard enough. Even my vegetarian wife was satisfied! If you're on half board you can buy a very cheap (and large) bar snack as an alternative to the more expensive lunch buffet. The beach is quiet, sandy and good for a swim - though not any use for snorkelling - do go on the boat further out into the reef where it is amazing. The pool is excellent and right next to the bar. We would recommend hiring a car to see more of the island - they can be booked at the hotel. The black river gorges are a short drive away, and the whole island could be seen in a day. If you want to use the internet, drive to the Spar complex in Flic en Flac where it is a fraction of the over inflated price at the hotel. All in all, this hotel gave us all we were looking for - a fun, quiet and relaxing holiday with every facility to hand. And the tropical birds delivering their "dusk chorus" were fascinating. Highly recommended.

A wonderful holiday

from Doris=May
Flic en Flac, The Sands Hotel Resort, as recommended by others on this website. We took their advice and booked it. We stayed there from 30 October to 10 November and it exceeded all our expectations. We were there primarily to attend our cousin's wedding in the Temple at Quatreborne and reception at Domain Anna at Flic en Flac. Our stay was wonderful. The hotel was very comfortable and the staff looked after us extremely well. The food was lovely, and most days were sunny. We went out on five of the days we were there, with our family wedding party, and saw many interesting parts of the island. My husband celebrated his 60th birthday during that week and we asked the hotel whether we could invite some relatives in for lunch. The staff went to a lot of trouble to set a table for 19 people on the terrace of the hotel, just by the beach. It was a wonderful setting and the meal was delicious. We were very spoilt.
During our stay we made use of the volleyball, sailing, dolphin-watching boat, glass bottomed boat. There was also tabletennis but we didn't have enough time.
Do stay at the Sands Hotel, but do have a look around the island too. Isle aux cerfs on the East Coast was lovely. We were however always pleased to come back to the Sands Hotel after our days out and see the sunset.

Super Sands!

from Scottigal
We have just spent 2 wonderful weeks at Sands resort. The combination of a visit at the beginning of the season and the picturesque location at the end of a road in a quiet area provided a perfect environment for chilling out. We were delighted the tourist shops were a few miles away! Our accommodation consisted of a huge bedroom with comfortable bed, large bathroom with a 'wet room' type shower, large bath separate wc and a walk-in dressing area for the clothes. The patio outside looked onto nicely maintained gardens with a host of different kinds of wild birds and the beach was 20 or so yards away.
The evening meal alternated between Table d'Hote and themed buffets and in general was very good indeed. On a couple of occasions the lamb was a bit tough but that was probably a blessing in disguise as it meant we couldn't pig out every evening! The breakfast chef Mel was good fun and produced lovely poached eggs.
We caught the local bus from the Hilton Hotel (15 minute walk away) - a cheap fun experience! The walks in either direction from the beach to Tamarin or Flic en Flac made an interesting diversion. We had a lovely time on 3 trips in the hotel taxis and we managed to get round the rest if the island. We enjoyed sole use of the huge swimmimg pool and the free water sports. Few children were around and I suspect there would not be enough to entertain teenagers.
We experienced no rain or mosquitoes. Over the years we've had a few really good holidays and we're quite fussy. We could not fault the Sands Resort was Super!
