Top Local Tips for Antananarivo
Visa takes you places Do not travel with a mastercard. It is only accepted at one bank on the entire island. the ads are true. visa does take you places. mastercard does not.
Tana Airport Be prepared to wait for long periods of time at check-in, especially if it's an International flight. Check-in is less than efficient and as a consequence, my flight to Paris was delayed by two hours. In a word, Chaos!
Tips on Eating (and not getting sick!) in Madagascar We had a Malagasy tour guide that absolutely forbade us to ever drink juice in hotels (except for super-high end hotels, which are pretty scarce in Madagascar)...he claims that behind-the-scenes in the kitchen, the restaurant staff typically mix packaged juice with TAP water (yeeeesh!) Which if true, will definitely make you really ill! Ditto for milk products (milk in a creamer, yogurt in a bowl, ice cream) served in hotels -- avoid drinking or eating these. The exception to this is anything you by PACKAGED, at for example, a little supermarket, or at the Jovenna Gas Stations (which have a mini-mart in them). Any packaged food (juice, milk, yogurt, ice cream) is fine, and can be consumed with impunity.
