Historical Traveller Reviews of Fairview Hotel
what a great place!
from Grecwonderful bathrooms!
from dreamsNottinghamI stayed in 3 rooms over 8 nights - basic single, first class single and business. The basic single was as it says, perfect for budget or short overnight before moving on. High window, no real view. 1st class had a kingsize bed and was truly wonderful, a beautiful room with own front garden and door step! Only downside was no mirror in the bedroom, problem if you prefer your own hairdryer/ straighteners!
Business was equally romantic with a fantastic bathroom and windows overlooking the gardens, only downside, no fridge. Service friendly, excellent in every way. Breakfast - fantastic! A lovely country city hotel.
Very smart hotel - but not overly central
from 1968jawrestaurants serve good food, and the pool is great. My room had everything I needed, including mosquito nets, and was very quiet.
My only reservation is that it is not very central. Taxis are on hand
to take you into town, although we decided to walk (about 15 minutes), which wasn't too far, although definitely not to be recommended at night.
I wasn't too impressede with Nairobi - the guidebooks put me off a bit with their talk of "Nairobbery"! Lamu (on the coast - our final destination) was much nicer!
Best stay in Nairobi for the price
from dogonhQuite Nice
from Twenty7eastthe front desk staff was very helpful and even allowed us to store our excess luggage at the hotel for the time that we were on safari (had not even been hotel guests at this point.)
we also appreciated the lush and secure surroundings. prior to going on safari we stayed in downtown nairobi for one week - an experience never to be repeated - and returned the same day that two women from the us embassy were gunned down in a car jacking. it was reassuring to pass through so much security on the way in and then be in such a peaceful setting.
our only complaint was the food at the poolside cafe. it was way too expensive and not very good. as an example, we paid about US $7 for "authentic" nachos. what we got was, literally, 15 Cool Ranch Dorritos covered in pasta sauce with a few bits of shredded cheese. oh well, live and learn.
lovely and felt safe
from maziejaneThis was part of our honeymoon and we used it as our base when going on safari and then off to Mombasa, they stored luggage/gifts that we didnt want to take to other places. We will return to this hotel.
Budget room is really budget!
from marjiVancouverOther than that, the hotel was excellent! The restaurants and wine cellar are good.
Excellent Hotel
from kaleleAt least four stars
from MistyLaw2I've stayed in some of the best and worst hotels around the world including two others in Nairobi which were both horrible.
The Fairview is a warm and friendly hotel offering nice accommodation for the price. Rooms were spacious, clean and nicely decorated with wooden floors, writing desks and a powerful shower in the bathroom.
There's a pool in the lovely gardens and the place has a nice feel to it.
The staff was also very helpful when KLM lost our bags and arranged to have them delivered to the hotel when they arrived.
While it's not a top-end luxury hotel, it's far better than anything else in the price range. It's also a bit of an oasis in a big, dusty, busy, scary at times city. Well worthy of four-stars.
Great Choice for many reasons
from Albatross37I have stayed at The Fairview about 7 times over the last 3 years. I store luggage there while on different "legs" of my safaris. Recently some birder's that where there with me identified 30 bird species on the grounds in the two days we were there.
You cannot go wrong with the Fairview, it will make you feel right at home no matter where you have come from, or how many times you have, or have not been to Kenya.
Very safe and secure, and extremely affordable for Nairobi.
Top Local Tips for Nairobi
Getting to/from the Carnivore restaurant in Nairobi Don't let your driver talk you into a special "excursion" to the Carnivore - by all means go there, but just take a taxi one way from the hotel and get another one coming back. We had a driver intimate that we had to have our own car to get to and from the Carnivore (about 15 minutes outside of town) - rubbish. There are dozens of Taxis waiting outside the Carnivore to take you home. Otherwise you will end up paying your driver to wait while you eat and he will charge you $20-30 to do so.
Giraffe Center, Langata Be sure to get the giraffe to get its lunch pellet from your own mouth! The giraffe are big, but gentle, and the experience will elicit squeals of laughter from the crowd and get you a wonderful photo opportunity.
Taxi is must Alawys use a taxi booked through the desk. Never walk around Nairobi at night.
