Nice staff but dated hotel, transport difficult and mosquitos are a problem!

This was once the hotel to recommend - lovely view, many quality rooms, lift to your floor, restaurant with good food and the competition could not rival it and so on, sadly through lack of investment, the standards have slipped, the rooms are no longer desireable, the problem of mosquitos here right on the lake is terrible, the lift is often not working or can break down with you in and the list goes on. The only thing that has progressed with time the price continues to rise and the sunset and beautiful scenery has remained the same.
In summary, this is no longer a hotel to recommend and Imperial Hotel is nice but very pricy. If you want value for money go for a smaller hotel or a guest house in Kisumu but ensure it has transport links within a minutes walk and it comes with a Free breakfast else you'll pay quite a bit more on top. Also a top tip is stay a little away from the lake otherwise the little mossies swarm around the lights and enter your room when the door is opened - like Sunset. Location wise, look along Kenyatta Highway or Kibos Road in Kisumu.

Top Local Tips for Kisumu

Some tips for Kisumu GETTING AROUND: Tuk tuks (the tripod taxi cars) are the cheapest and fastest way to get around town. To get anywhere in town (ie: town to the Sunset or town to the national museum) it is 50 shillings...don't let those drivers over charge you just because you are a tourist. To get from town to the airport...it should be about 150 shillings. Going in regular car taxis might be slightly more expensive and on the weekends (and at night) rates may go up as well. Boda bodas (bicycle taxis) are the cheapest way to get around, but they only take one person at a time and are considered pretty dangerous. Those rides cost about 10 or 15 shillings. No helmet and no protection among Kisumu's crazy traffic. Good luck. ATTRACTIONS: The national museum is totally worth a visit! It's quite an impressive place with lots and lots of animals: crocs, turtles, snakes, lots and lots of fish. The staff are really friendly and knowledgeable. I spent a solid 2.5 hours there.
