Historical Traveller Reviews of Oriental Rivoli Hotel

Will be back!

from limitedition1
I have just returned from a 10 day holiday to Egypt with a group of 9 people. The haggling started as soon as we got out of the airport and since we heard that the hotel was only a 15 minute drive away we didnt want to pay too much. There was 9 of us and therefore we needed a minibus that was initially offered at £30 sterling! Do not take any first price because in the end we got it down to £10.

When we arrived at the hotel our luggage was unloaded but for some reason left unatteneded by staff in the car park for at least a good 15 minutes. A few of us stayed back to keep an eye on things whilst the rest of us checked in. We was all offered pineapple juice on arrival which was rather refereshing due to the hot weather. Check in was straightforward and pleasent. I do have to also note that there was alot of communication via email between the hotel and myself due to changes being made from the group that i with. These were dealth with quickly and efficiently.

After being given our room keys we made our way to our rooms and was greeted by Tariq/Totti on the way. Great guy! He has a bar next to the pool and was very friendly. Very approachable and he had seemed to build up a rapport with the majority of guests in the hotel. But he does deserve alot of credit because out of all the staff, he was the main one we talked to on a regular basis.

Rooms were very spacious and clean. They had powerful showers and reliable air conditioning. The only problem was the fridge which didnt really keep things cold. But that seems to be a regional issue as many shops which store drinks in fridges do not keep them at a 'cold' temperature either. Beds were fairly comfortable. Housekeeping was excellent and on several occasions, the towels were folded into animals such as crocodiles, swans, crabs which was a nice touch.

Food was very mixed. We had breakfast included in our rate. This consisted of a buffet from 7am to 10am. Outside the restaurants there are two chefs who cook omelettes, flaffel and pancakes to order. Inside, you have your juices, salads, croissants, pastries, bread, some cooked food and some cold meats. Tea and coffee is also offered.

We had lunch at the hotel once. We was offered a 'buffet' lunch for our group. It wasnt the greatest of meals especially for the 100 L.E price. There was only 4 or 5 dishes (rice, kebab, fish, prawn and chicken) and several of us fell il the day after.

Apart from that, i would recommend the oriental rivoli pizza which was fairly nice.

Drinks at the bar are priced okay for tourists but are still available cheaper elsewhere. A large bottle of water cost 10 L.E (£1) but is available at the 24/7 supermarket next door for 2 L.E (20p). Beers were 22-25 L.E. Only reason we mainly bought drinks here was to a) get the cold and b) have them whilst talking to the staff.

There is also a sheisha cafe above the restaurant. Here you wil find a man called Ali who was also extremely helpful. He was another membetr of staff who made our job that more enjoyable so credit to him.

Next door to the hotel you will see a half finished hotel which is an extention of the Oriental Rivoli. Do not worry about this though because there was absolutely no disturbances. If anything, its looking pretty impressive.

Swimming pool was a decent size for the hotel. Im guessing it wasnt quite peak season when we were there but the pool was never crowded and there were alawys sunbeds availible.

If you want to go to the beach you need to get a ticket from reception. You need to cross the road but it really is no big deal. But that is coming from a group of 9 19-22 year olds. But really, it isnt that much hassle even if you do have young kids. After crossing the road its a 5 minute walk to the beach where they provide sunbeds and towels.

The hotel isnt situated right on Naama Bay but in a more quiet area. It is only a 15 minute walk there or a 2 minute taxi ride.. We were told not to pay more than 5 L.E for a taxi. I managed to get this price once and never again for that low for some reason. We mainly ended up paying 10 L.E. Or if you take a small blue bus/van it'l only cost you 1 L.E which is a bargain!

Overall, a very enjoyable experience.
Management Response from OrientalRivolli
Really was great and nice group come to our hotel and have fun and enjoyed...thank you for your review which sure will help all our guest .Concerning the food request which the group asked for it was 4/5 dishes for 100 L.E which not too much as a private buffet.any way the most important to us that all of you felt comfortable and you will come back.

Great Hotel, location not so great!

from ro22er
After much searching we picked the Oriental Rivoli after reading reviews from various websites. On arrival we were greeted by Said (Reception Manager) and Sayed (concierge staff) and Tariq (Bar Staff) who provided a welcome soft drink. Check in was painless and we were taken to our room which was of an average size, decorated as described in an oriental manner (Moorish). The bathroom was huge in comparison. The following morning we went to breakfast which consisted of various rolls, bread, pastries, cold meats, fruit, hot Egyptian food, fruit juice and tea or coffee. The pool is not much larger than a private pool, however, I-man (pool attendant) was very attentive and moved the sun shade around with no complaints. At lunch time you can order basic items from salads to chicken and rice. The staff were helpful and friendly especially Mamoud, Islam, Wahid and Taseer. Ayman (Food and Beverage Manager) was particularly helpful and nothing seemed too much for him to do. Evening meals were freshly cooked buffet style and varied as Ayman introduced theme nights (just don't expect the Chinese to taste quite like it does in the UK). The location, however, is a bit suspect! Yes, the beach is 5-10 minutes walk away although you do have to cross two dual carriageways, walk down a back street, then find which part of the beach to sit on. Also, you will have to get there early if you want a decent position as the guests from the Gaffy Hotel seem to be out at 4am to stake their claims!!!! Na'ama Bay is about 20-25 minutes walk away (Top tip: cross to the central reservation and walk in the direction of on- coming traffic as this will prevent you going mad by the constant tooting from taxi drivers!!) and is vibrant, noisy, somewhat touristy and, in my opinion, over priced. Overall, our stay was made extremely enjoyable by the homely and friendly feel of the Oriental Rivoli and it's welcoming staff.

Real oriental feeling

from nygyuri
Oriental Rivoli is a not so big four star hotel next to Peace Road. Its charms come from its classic oriental style in architectural and interior design in spite of the fact that it is a pretty new building.
Self service breakfasts and dinners were ok but we (as guys with sensitive stomach) stayed off uncooked vegetables.
Pool is not very large but it was enough because of the half-house of guests.

Nice, clean friendly hotel with good location for price paid

from stereojo
Had to change to this hotel at last minute when our travel agent informed us that our original hotel was over booked and the alternative had horrendous reviews.

At the time we visited the hotel was very small, however, there was an extension underway next door that would probably make the hotel 3 to 4 times bigger! Despite this there was no evidence that this was a building site, no noise and the new room fronts facing the pool had been completed despite the rooms behind not being finished!

there's 2 types of hotel in Na'ama bay, hotels on the beach and cheap(er) hotels! Of those not on the beach this is a good location. There's a main road between the hotel and the hotels that front the beach and the beach about 5 minutes walk through these hotels. It's about 20 minutes walk along the beach into the centre or about E£1/E£2 in a taxi. The road is very busy and whilst the traffic is generally easy to traverse, it may not be suited to young families!

The room was very spacious, especially when compared to those on the med!! Very spacious, air con, TV with BBC world and a great shower! Ours also had a nice seating area! The beds were a little soft though for our liking. The house keeping guys always kept the room extremely clean and tidy and there was always a new towel sculpture on the beds each day!

The food was repetative but there was plenty to choose from. Omelletes and pancakes made to order for breakfast as well as cereal, fruit salad plus plenty of bread and pastries. There was also a selection possibly not geared towards the British palatte (soup, salads, sausage and potatoes) but worth a go if you're adventurous enough! Dinner there was fresh pasta bar and other fresh food including stir fry cooked to order as well as a wide selection of other hot food, salads and FANTASTIC desserts!

The beach is shared with one of the other hotels (Days Inn Gafy Resort) and whilst it is spacious and has plenty of lounges, the lounges themselves aren't the most comfortable! Only issue was that the last day we were there and wanted to chill out on the beach for a few hours before our flight we were told that we would have to pay for entry to the beach (E£20 per person) even though we had only been to the beach 2 out of the 7 days we were there.

Small but nice with plenty of comfy sun lounges and a bar. Massages are offered pool side during the day.

Nice, clean, new hotel with nice pool area. Good location if you're not staying on the main beach strip.

Food can be repetative, main road needed to cross, but only really if with families.

Very Nice - Hotel, Staff, Location ... all good

from Geneva72
We are a mid thirties couple who wanted to find a hotel for low price but still a good experience. Well, we found it. Oriental Rivoli was a very good experience for both of us. From when we arrived at the reception to our departure, the staff treated us really well and took care of all of our needs. This is a newer hotel so everything is in good shape. Located right next to a McDonalds, a Sushi restaurant, a Pharmacie, a big grocery store and a currency conversion place made it really easy for us.

The rooms are nice size and the bathroom was also very nice. The only complaint as already mentioned by others is that the rooms seem a little dark because they are painted in darker colors and the lamps used do not give out enough light. So, if they can change that, it would be perfect.

The beach is about 5 minutes short walk across the street from the hotel. You get a ticket at the reception and walk over to the beach, hand it to an attendant over there and they give you big towels. Go find one of the many beach beds/umbrellas and enjoy. It's that simple. One more thing we liked was the walk from the city center to our hotel. You walk down towards the beach and then take this promenade like walk along the beach and all the nice restaurants/resorts towards the city center. A leisurely walk down this path takes about 12-15 minutes to get to the center where the night action is. You can eat nice dinners, shop, lounge at a sheesha places in the open air and people watch.

I would definitely stay at this place again. Really liked the service and the friendly staff there. Two thumbs up.

Small and friendly

from emilouYork
Me and my husband stayed at this hotel for 14 nights from 14.2.08. We were a little nervous about visiting sharm again as we had previously had a very bad experience at one of the all inclusive hotels, so had been very careful to select a hotel with good reviews. We were not disappointed with the Oriental Rivoli. Great loctaion, walking distance to Namma bay ( 10 mins)

Rooms: A decent size, with king size bed and plasma tv. The bathroom was really nice, good shower and hairdryer. Plenty of hanging space and always spotlessly clean.

Pool: Very cold!! as most unheated pools in winter. Again the whole area was really clean and bar staff very helpful and friendly. Snacks and drinks are available and all at good prices. There is a massage area set up, which is reasonable priced and very relaxing!

Restaurant: we booked BB at the hotel and enjoyed the buffet style breakfast. The restaurant for evening meals looked very nice but as the hotel is new and quiet it lacks any atmosphere, but i'm certain when the hotel is busier it would be nice.

Beach: This is the only real downside of the hotel. The beach is shared with the Days Inn Gafy accross the main road. This hotel is very run down and the sunloungers on the beach were really uncomfortable. The toilets were gross and the bar facilities very poor. The beach itself was very clean though and there are some dance and keep fit activities available, and a lovely view.

terrible hotel like nursing home for old people !!!

from 071810l
I had the worst experience staying during New Years Celebration in this small, ugly, dark hotel, which is like NURSING HOME for old people ! I was first time in Sharm el Sheikh and really didn't have experience and recommendation which hotel to choose ! I tried to choose and change 3 hotels during my stay to compare the services. So, I wish I would never left Hilton with 5 starts exellent fantastic services and hotel conviences and wish wouldn't never move to this holl ! It's ugly, dark, small hotel with 100 old age people, and the atmosphere you feel like sanatory or nursing home oh my god, I wanted go home rather sitting there ! No activities, no space, no pool, no entertainement, nothing ! Room the worst I have ever seen in prestige city ! Rooms don't have windows, can you believe? No windowns, rooms are damed, wet, smell dirty, ugly, we couldn't stay and sleep normaly there ! Never come back, highly not recommend, don't stay there if you don't want to make your hollidays nightmare !

a great holiday

from frewby
just returned on 14/01/2008 after two great weeks in this hotel. It is small compared to others that we have used in sharm but it had a certain charm. Extention work is being done but the disruption was minimal I just hope when the place doubles in size it wont loose its charm. The place whole place was spotlessly clean and house-keeping were at work all day. prices in bar were fair. we were there for the new year and the staff put on a great night, the food, entertainment and atmosphere were good. Our second week the hotel was almost empty and the standard and choice of food fell a bit but we never went hungry. The only strange thing was that the room we had (211)had two small windows covered with heavy wooden lattice work looking out onto a corridor so the room was always in darkness and as there was no balcony if you woke thru the night you didnt really know if it was night or morning. I would have loved a balcony or a big window. Tariq and Essam doing massage and plucking eyebrows around the pool were fab. Staff very friendly. Close to beach and Naama Bay. All in all a great time was had and would advise anyone looking for a quiet end to the day to go here it was really good

Fantastic Hotel

from D14NA
We have never booked a last minuet break or a holiday over the internet so i was relying on Trip Advisor having discovered it for reviews on Hotels in Egypt to help me select form the various holidays on offer. You can imagine i was hesitant when i found the perfect holiday price , in the perfect location but with a hotel that had no reviews. So i took a chance after seeing the hotels website, and i am so glad i did because it was exactly as the website showed and more! The Hotel is definatly a 4 star but with a 5 Star Service and attitude! Its location is in a perfect position in Naama Bay for peace and tranquility you are 5 min walk away from its private beach which is shared with the DAYS INN Gaffy Resort where you can join in with all the beach activities (great for keeping any kids occupied) or just laze in the sun. A 10 min walk down the road you are in the centre of Naama Bay with all the Hustle and Bustle of a livley resort with its shops restaraunts and bars. Taxi's are so cheap but you dont really need to use them if you stay here!
The staff are freindly all speak excellant english and are commited to looking after you. Tarriq who runs the POOL BAR was happy to show you the bars in Naama Bay after hours just for the English company and not for profit - - - - for every drink you bought him he wanted to buy you two back!!!
The food is excellant and the breakfast buffet has an enourmous choice. We didnt use the hotel for evening meals as we went into Naama Bay to the many restaraunts, but everyone we spoke to praised the food. Alcohol prices were reasonable and the mini bar prices for soft drinks in you rooms were almost the same as what you would pay in the supermarket which is next door to the hotel in a small complex that houses a Mac donalds, a cafe and a small shopping arcade which is still being developed. EVERYTHING YOU NEED FOR A RELAXING OR EXCITING HOLIDAY is within easy reach. This hotel is perfect for couples and families. Our holiday spaned New Year and the effort by the hotel in preparing for NEW YEAR was amazing a large Beduin Style tent was put up over the outsde pool area so you could eat dance and be entertained by dancers and musicians ---- they certainly know how to put on a party.
We will definately return to Sharm and to this hotel. We had a fantastic holiday and should you choose to stay here we are sure you will too!

Great find

from BeverleySuze123
A really unique hotel in the middle of some very glitzy (and tacky!) hotels. Newly opened with a lovely pool and very nicely decorated rooms, this hotel will not disappoint you. The staff are charming, the food and drinks are good and the location is excellent.
They told us that the hotel is growing but with new rooms are to come new pools and restaurants.
We booked this through Thomsons pretty last minute and were more than impressed with what we had.
As we say, not as glitzy as some of the others nearby but much more intimate and you felt as though you were a valuable customer rather than a number.
