Great beach, but management ruined our holiday

The hotel itself is quite pretty with a great view over the sea. The snorkeling is fantastic with a coral reef just off the beach. Food was good and plentiful.
However, the check-in staff are very rude and are not at all concerned with making the guest happy, resorting to blackmail before they give you the room key. We arrived at midday but didn't get into our room until 5pm, basically losing half a day of our short 5 day holiday. The reservation manager made us sit in the lobby until he could sort out a problem with the booking. Our room was booked and paid for in full weeks before arrival but they had suddenly seen some problem and wouldn't let us check-in unless we paid extra. After many discussions with the check-in desk and them accusing us of lying we eventually gave in and paid the extra money. 2 days later they got an answer from the booking agent that it was not our fault and refunded us the money. A bit too late as it had already ruined our holiday. Pity.

When we were waiting for the taxi back to the airport we saw a similar situation unfolding at the front desk. Poor guests !

Every now and again they poison the cats in and around the complex. (staff explanation not mine) So be aware when you take you little ones with you the cat that sprawled on the path isn't always ASLEEP!
Staff were always on hand to help..........

Sun was out, food was good (if not a little the same each day) but most of all the staff made the stay complete.
They were always ready at what ever time to serve your needs or just help you in after a long night in town!
Room was spacious and gardens were kept in beautiful condition.
Only downside was forcefullness of local traders to obtain a sale.
Highly recomended!
All I can say is go there!

Lovely hotel. Beautiful grounds that are constantly maintained by gardeners.Food was nice, a bit repetative but plenty to choose from. The staff are very polite, they cant do more for you. My fiance enjoyed the beer, wine not bad either. The hotel do lovely cocktails too. Rooms were cleaned daily,tv,not many british channels but who wants to sit in their rooms watching tv on holiday anyway. If you go look out for Muhammed bar near the reception, he's a top guy, even tho he is rushed off his feet most of the time he always has time for a chat, even did some cocktails for me that wasn't on the list. Oh everyone speaks English too. If you are going dont need to say have a great time cause I know that you will! JUst on critism, the wicker chairs have no cushion on them leaves a lovely mark on your thighs!
The best

I really enjoyed my stay at the club fanara hotel. I would suggest the hotel to all of my friends when we want to on holiday when we get our exam results.
The people at the hotel were so kind and helpful. My television wasn't working at first, I mentioned it to reception and it was fixed straight away!
The food was fantastic! I thought it was really different to have different meals from different countries.
The food wasn't cold and it didn't give me a belly ache.
I am looking to stay at the hotel in May sometime.
I'm excited already.

Nice hotel - for no more than a week though!

from Layla047
Myself and my husband stayed at this hotel for a week in July, and had a lovely holiday.

I would disagree with some of the reports of a limited choice of food - at lunch and dinner there were always at least 10 different dishes available - as well as pizza and chips. I never noticed that the food was luke warm or cold - in fact a lot of it came straight off the grill as it was cooked. Most people did seem to suffer from tummy problems, but this was certainly not limited to this hotel - friends who stayed in other hotels nearby at around the same time came home with the same bug!! It seemed to be an airborne bug going around everyone - that immodium seemed to have no effect on!!

The hotel was spotlessly clean, and the staff were helpful and friendly. We had a room with a sea view, which was wonderful. The reef from the hotel beach is amazing - you can swim straight out to it, the snorkelling equipment is free from the hotel, and this alone made the trip worthwhile.

Wouldn't stay in Sharm for longer than a week though, unless you're a serious diver, as there is virtually nothing to do outside of the hotel.

brilliant time

i was there for one week, and really enjoied it, my only two things to improve would e the loca bar to be open later, i was willing to pay for drinks after 12 however the bar was rearly open untill ten past. i do understand this however as the location and close proximity to some of the rooms, would meen some of the geusts having sleepless nights. so they do have a good balance, and i supose as i am only 18, i would usually go into sharm at 12 anyway. my only other comment would be that the food got slighlty monotomus, but i have expercienced thi at every other all inclusive i ahve stayed at anyway. finially id just like to say hi and thankyou to all the anamation team and bar staff, keep up the good work xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx I MISS YOU ORANGE SMILES!! :(

25 December 2005 - 1 January 2006.
We have just returned from a week at the Club Fanara.

I booked in to the hotel directly from the internet. I was a bit upset that the total price quoted didn't actually include my children (47.50 Euro a day each) nor the New Year's Eve gala (65 Euro each incl children)which added quite a bit on to the cost. Apparently these additional costs were on page 2 of the booking confirmation (once you have booked!). Why it is not included in the total price produced on the internet I don't know. So be careful if you are booking direct in to the hotel and take this in to consideration if you are comparing the price with other hotels or tour operators.

That said, the hotel is in a really good location. We (myself and 2 children 18 + 9) had room 4321 in the hotel which had an excellent view of the swimming pool and the sea. The room was really good with coffee/tea making facilities and a fridge. My sons (19 + 11) had room A3 which overlooked the workmen's site. This did not bother them as they were never up early enough or in the room to look at the view! Their room was more basic.

I liked the food and sampled most things which were very nice and I was never ill. The children, not being as adventurous, ate mostly fresh bread, waffles, pancakes, cakes, biscuits, fruit and, of course, chips when they were served on a lunchtime.

The first 4 days we spent on the beach and the children went snorkelling in the sea. The coral and fish are well worth seeing. There is always plenty of sunbeds and an attendant to assist you. The beach is down the cliff which in my opinion wasn't a great distance and the view down was breathtaking with chairs to rest on the way down. There is also a beach bar at the bottom.

On the 5th day the children started using the swimming pool and 2 of my children were then unwell. They weren't physically sick but were just off colour. So it didn't stop them enjoying themselves.

The service at the hotel is really good. We experienced a few problems, such as toilet blockage. But it was repaired relatively quickly and the reception telephoned a few hours later to confirm the toilet was working.

The family entertainment was basic but my younger children enjoyed it. The older boys went to the disco most nights or got a taxi for about £2 to Naama Bay. They both enjoyed their stay at the hotel and made friends. They had a good rapport with Mohammed the Shisha man and some of the other staff.

My younger children went in to the Kids Club and loved it. Because they are older I gave permission for them to enter and leave the facility as they wanted. Although they didn't actually come out until it closed as they enjoyed the activities.

None of the children wanted to leave and tried to persuade me to stay another week.

A great holiday

from julia687
I had a brilliant time & would highly recommend here to everyone. The staff were always very efficiant & friendly, Mohamed the shisha man was great.
There were no problems with food while I was there, everything was well cooked & lovely! The Medina restaurant has quite a large buffet area & plenty of choice no matter how fussy you are - every night is themed ie British, Italian, Seafood etc. I always ate lunch at the temple pool bar & they had a great selection of salad & hot items.
The pool area was very quiet in the day even with a few kids running around. I was there to relax but if you are more active there is the entertainment team who are always doing volleyball, water aerobics, archery etc & there is the beach with with snorkling & diving off it.
I was in the villa's, some rooms do not have balconys but it wasn't a problem as I was never in there, it was clean & the bed was so comfortable! but perhaps would rate it as a good 3* more then 4. rest of hotel is 4*.
I also paid a visit to the beauty salon which was extra but they are quite reasonable & their manicures & pedicures were fantastic.
Fantasia is about 10 minutes walk away & they have a good choice of shops & a few places to eat & drink which we walked to a few times. They also do a dinner show which I didn't have time to see but looked great. For more shopping Nama bay is about 10 minutes by taxi & cost £2 to get there. I did visit old sharm but much prefer nama bay.
I came here as a single traveller & made lots of friends and would definatly come alone again as they are very strict & the staff are not allowed to chat up the guests unlike in many other hotels!
5*'s for customer service.

No Change Since Our stay Then

from Eddie Gremlin
Where to start... Went in May 05 hotel overbooked, Thomas Cook rep useless, poisoned cats but worse still 6 months later still suffering ill effects of bug. Myself I believe it was more to do with a water-borne infection from swimming pool, I went in on first day wife did not, I came down a few days later with a raging gut, she did not. Struggled on so as not to spoil all the holiday. On return to home everything became much worse. Its now in the hands of solicitors.

Saying that House reef fantastic. stay at hotel next door and swim over.

Food Poisoning :(

from pclements100
My girlfriend and I have just returned from a one week stay in Club Fanara. After reading the reviews on here we decided to book just two days before travelling, we were a little apprehensive about some of the comments (particularly about the food) but decided that because of it location we would give it a go.

This would be our second visit to Sharm in two years, last time we stayed a the Savoy.

So how did it go? Well, the hotel is very nice, the grounds are clean and extremely well kept. All the staff are very friendly. Are they just looking for your tips, we don't think so. One or two of them warmed to us more than others and seemed to genuinely want to be 'friends'.

The reef at the hotel is great, I say many good fish just snorkelling a few hundred feet out. Because you are so close to the Ras Mohammed national part many boats come to the corals for so people can snorkel, so one good thing about this hotel is there is little need to go anywhere else to snorkel/dive if you really dont want to. There is a dive center on site so you can book any scuba diving trips directly from here and they do a trial scuba session several times a week for absolute beginners to have a go.

While the beach is not sandy it isnt so bad, but shoes would be recommended. There is quite a bit of dead corral on the beach and its a little rocky. The beach isnt massive but we found there to be plenty of space to put our two loungers. We mostly went to the beach in the afternoons though.

A word of caution though for those less able, this hotel is on a cliff and the beach area is at the bottom. The walk down takes five minutes down a ramp or steps.

If you prefer to use the pools this hotel has a good main pool area which was busy but not really too noisy. Our room was right by the pool and although we are not ealy risers, we didnt have any problems with noise and the like. The whole area is well designed in my opinion as the rooms are situated so they are close enough to the pool area but suffer no adverse effects from it. Even the entertainment (aqua arobics, water games) and people using the pool bar and restuarant didnt cause a problem for us.

By the way, the pools seemed clean with no evidence of ear infections, etc. We used them quite a bit and have no problems.

Our room was a double family room, no 3119. It was clean and comfortable with plenty of wardrobe space. The air conditioning stopped working after a day and we told the reception at 21.15 as we left the hotel to go to Naama Bay, when we returned at 12.00 it was working fine, so thumbs up to that. Our cleaner didnt make any fancy scultures our of towels much to the disappointment of the other half but we did get a bowl of fruit one evening after leaving a 10LE (£1) tip on the bed!!

There is a free shuttle bus into Naama bay and Old Sharm that drops of and picks up and certain times of the day which is quite handy, otherwise there are plenty of taxis nearby you can use. We only went to Naama Bay once this time round as we had been there quite a bit duing our last visit. It didnt seem as busy this time as it was before when we visited in April. Make up your own mind if this is a good or bad thing but I personally preferred it when it was busier.

We didnt do any excursions since we had done them last time and wanted to relax for this week but should you wish to do any I would recommend going into Naama Bay and booking them there. We saved a lot of money last year by booking with Cataract Travel on the main strip opposite the Camel Bar. We flew with them to Cairo and Luxor, did a jeep safari to the coloured canyon, done a boat trip to Ras Mohammed and glass bottom boat ride, plus the camel trek in the desert and we honestly had no problems with them at all. I cant remember how much we saved exactly but I think the one day trips to Cairo/Luxor cost us the same in dollars as the reps wanted to charge in pounds. We were very happy and even got the camel trek thrown in for free when we asked.

There is evening entertainment provided at the hotel by the animation team but this is not very good. The hotel caters to many nationalities and this shows in the entertainment program. During the day they run competitions, do several activities by the pool and do the best they can. Please not there are no water sports available at this hotel but you can get free snorkelling equipment.

Now about the food. I wont beat around the bush, I couldnt return to work for two days when I got home because I had food poisoning (confirmed by my UK doctor). My girlfriend is still off sick with it as I write this review.

There is a fantastic selection of food, make no mistake. Chips were available almost every day, as was at least one chicken dish, a fish dish and some form of pasta. Other days they had beef steaks, crab, calamari, curry to name a few. This is in addition to a large salad bar and deserts that were simple outstanding (great tasting gatteaus, fresh fruit, donuts and even bread and butter pudding!!) Variety isnt really an issue here.

I dont know what I ate that caused my stomach bug or what caused it in my girlfriend we ate different things - she ate a lot of fish to begin with and I ate a lot of chicken but I got ill on day 4 and she came down with it on day 7. We never ate outside of the hotel though, all we consumed outsite was just two bottles of beer and a bottle water at a bar.

We didnt notice droves of people green with sickness, we only spoke to one other english couple who had complained or stomach upset that imodium seemed to be sorting out. Ours was much worse though. I had to get some medication from the pharmacy nearby which in fairness controlled the sickness quite quickly but I still lost 3 days of my holiday to it and a further 2 days off work when I got home. So be careful.

We didnt think much of the La Gazelle restuarant, there didnt seem to be as much variety there and cats roamed around the outsite tables, not good if you dont like cats (true in my girfriends case). But I wont be too harsh as I was not feeling well on the day we visited and not everyone is bothered by the presence of cats.

All in all, our holiday was spoilt a little but to sum up I would say the hotel is in a good location, is very relaxing, offers good snorkling and activities during the day should you want it, but the food needs looking into in case there is an underlying problem. The staff are friendly and work hard to ensure the place is well kept and you have a good stay. But for our illness we would have not any hestiation in giving this place full marks.

Food is good but not safe

from A TripAdvisor Member
We stayed at Club Fanara for 14 nights this July. The hotel was immaculately clean and staff friendly - sometimes being over efficient by removing our drinks from the tables between courses while we were at the buffet! Extremely annoying at first, but became quite comic after a few days! The food was varied and enjoyable (other peoples comments about repetition, chips, pizza & lack of variety on this site not true). Unfortunately though the food was always lukewarm and i spent 3 days in bed with bad food poisoning - a shame as the hotel appeared to be so clean but i felt i had to watch what i was eating for the rest of the holiday. The general topic of conversation around the pool seemed to be everyones upset stomachs - even the rep told us that most people get ill, the local pharmacy was piled high with drugs for this problem!

Warm drinks at the pool bar was a shame and plastic cups even during dinner at this bar disappointing.

Evening entertainment was extremely limited and could be greatly improved - especiallly as there is nothing to do in the area outside the hotel, not too bad if you go for 1 week but boring for 2.

Our air conditioning was broken when we arrived but was promptly fixed when we complained - but was still always noisy, it broke once more during our stay and resulted in water pouring from the unit in the ceiling at 1.30am!

Overall we found it good value for money but the stomach problems were not at all enjoyable and really should be sorted out for future visitors by giving kitchen staff food hygiene training. The views, scuba diving & snorkelling were the best things about the holiday.

Fab Location shame about the food

from A TripAdvisor Member
My husband and I have just returned from a weeks break at Club Fanara.
The hotel is spotless, the staff are pleasant and make you feel very welcome, from the minute you arrive they cannot do enough for you.
We stayed in a club room which was quite small but it was clean and as we were only there for 7 nights we were not bothered, if we went again I would upgrade to a family room.
The beach & sea are fabulous, the water is very clear and the fish are amazing. The pool was lovely but we liked it on the beach as enjoyed snorkelling every day.
Breakfast was good, pizza & chips at lunch were good however the rest of the food was awful it was either luke warm or stone cold. They cook the food so that it is hot but then they put them in large steel serving containers where the food went instantly cold. If they switched these containers to hot plates with heat lamps above (like they kept the pizza on) then they would solve this problem.
We are not lovers of pizza & chips but when we ate in the hotel that is all we could have.
We ate out at the Hard Rock Hotel in Naama Bay and found the food great it was a relief to eat hot food again. We paid £17 for a large starter and 2 main meals with 2 large beers so the prices are not expensive.
Naama Bay is very safe and buzzing with people, nightlife & shops it is very clean and we had great evenings out there. As the hotel mini bus has time restrictions we got taxis, they were £2.50 so it didn't break the bank.
We will definately return to Sharm but probably stay at a different hotel or if the Iberotel did a B&B rate then we would return there.

ps, you do not need a visa to stay in Sharm, when you land at the airport they will try and make you pay £15. Just say no and keep saying no because they are quite insistant!!!

Great Snorkling

from A TripAdvisor Member
The Hotel was recommended to us, because it has its own house reef. This was fantastic!!

The hotel itself was OK. The rooms were clean and sufficient for a relaxing time. The meals were very hectic as there were a lot of guests in the Hotel. Generally the food was average, not fantastic. Breakfasts were pretty hectic unless you went early to breakfast. It was also very hot in the dining room. Don't know what happened to the air conditioning.

Probably too many guests, not just for eating, but for the size of the pool area and the beach area. The beach is very narrow and unless you are up early to get your towel on one of the sun beds, forget it. The same is almost true for the poolside sunbeds.

A tip we found was to go to the pool based at the Residences, which was quiet and relaxing. It was a bit of an oasis in a metropolis of people. Once it gets cooler in the late afternoon, that would be the best time to go snorkling. You would probably also get a sun bed on the beach as well. It isn't a sandy beach so take some foot ware for the pebbles etc.

There are a few steps to get down to the beach, as the Hotel is on a cliff, but also a ramp system. Halfway down the steps there is a bar, for you to rest your legs or get a good view of the coastline with a drink in your hand.

The main problem came when we ordered a Bloody Mary at the main bar. Their version is to mix Vodka with tomatoe juice - enough said!! There is a nice range of drinks available but some you may have to pay for, so beware.

The Hotel was OK, which is what we expected. Snorkling was great. But I wouldn't want to stay there for more than 3 nights. If I was looking to only go for a beach Holiday for a week or more , I would pick another Hotel. The only draw back is that you might end up having to pay for boat trips to take you to the areas where there is good snorkling and diving, if you so wished.

Club Fanara is brilliant

from A TripAdvisor Member
My husband and I had a wonderful 2 weeks at the hotel last year. We booked via Thompson and stayed in one of the "Club" rooms which I think are much bigger than the "Residence" rooms. Found having the Gazelle restaurant at the other end of the complex made a nice change as it was smaller and more intimate. The only thing we could possibly find to criticise was the evening entertainment. Everything else was excellent. The standards of cleanliness are amongst the best we have ever experienced. We are in our early 40s and are quite widely travelled.

Top Local Tips for Sharm El Sheikh

Taxis and Rental Cars Don't pay more than 50 Egyptian Pounds (£5.00) for a taxi to Naama Bay, Old Market or Airport because they will try and charge a lot more. Don't use hotel taxi who charges 140 EP!

Don`t Expect Black Cabs The local taxis are not what you might expect. They look OK but are old and under maintained. The drivers only know one speed: fast. They are cheap however.

day trip to jersulem, and to st catherines if you want to go to jersulem on a day trip , go to the local tour agencys, they are in the shopping areas and the price is reasonable,€100 its a bus trip but worth it, st catherines monastry can be booked there too and at the moment is €35 for the trip, you will get the trips cheaper with the tour agencys, i used the one in nama bay shopping area on the right half way down the shopping area, they were reliable and good, also try the sea bed walking , again excellant, there are agents in old market too near the mountain,
