I have been to the sheraton in luxor twice now and have just booked to go again. The hotel staff are brilliant and the hotel is immaculate.

As it was our honeymoon we expected and were told we would be upgraded,if we were it doesn't show, the room smelt musty it had damp which was obvious, unsafe wiring, and basically dirty and outdated in design.Staff were unhelpful, and at times found them rude, would never go back to this hotel again, and will not recommend it to anyone.

This was by far the best week's holiday I have had for some years. The staff on board is fab. The guides are top of the pile. The Thompson reps are very nice and nothing is too much trouble. I can't wait to do it again.

7 days on Nile Commodore followed by 3 days at Ramases Hilton, Cairo and then 4 days at the Sheraton, Luxor. Fantastic! Everything on board first class, wonderful time in Cairo and relaxing final 4 days back in Luxor. Must better than I thought possible. Highly recommenmded.

I went to Luxor, spent two weeks on the Nile Commodore had the most wonderful time you can only imagine in your dreams. The crew and staff were the most politest people on earth. The food was delicious and plentiful. The second week, I stayed at Sheraton...this is a hotel with the best food available, travelling around Luxor couldnt be any easier with transport waiting outside at any time of the day. Horse and carriage, Taxi, Felluccas(boat) kind and pollite drivers always ensure for your safety first. Great Holiday... Definately go back.

I went over to Luxor, Eygpt and spent a week on the Nile Commodore and the 2nd week at the Sheraton Hotel. I enjoyed both weeks thoroughly and very much miss egypt. The Sheraton is a great hotel thats always clean with good facilities. I recommend it!

4th time at the Sheraton - we love it here

One of the best spots in Luxor with a circular pool overlooking the magestic River Nile. Food, excellent, especially in the Italian restaurant in the gardens. They have storks, ducks and even pelican in their own pool between the hotel and the little shops.
Heaven - we will be back.

The Sheraton Luxor is a fantastic hotel. It's not what I'd personally expect of 5 star hotels where I've stayed for work or on holiday and booked independently at high prices, but given how little we paid (£370 for a flight and package deal through Voyages Jules Verne), it was excellent. Lots of facilities and excellent service. Do pay for the Nile view room, even though the balcony is small it makes a huge difference. Some people from the holiday did not do this and they were in the bungalows and had bigger rooms BUT the air conditioning did not work so well.

Great pool right by the Nile. Good poolside grill and make sure you try a freshly squeezed juice. I also recommend the beauty salon for massages (I mean the one in the hotel with a nice German lady that you book from Guest Relations, stay well clear of the hair/beauty place in the shop area). The bank gives you a better rate (11 Egyptian to the £) than Gatwick Airport (9 Egyptian to the £)

The Sheraton a little bit away from the city centre but that gets you away from the hustle and bustle. Transport wise the Sheraton has a courtesy bus which drops off and picks off at the museum, however, if you ask the driver he will drop you other places e.g.outside the temple. If you want to get the bus back, you will have to go to the museum. You can hire bicycles for 40 Egyptian a day and if you get too hot you can always pile them on top of one of the estate car taxis. If you want to go into the centre, a taxi or a horse and carraige will try and charge you 40-100 Egyptian but be firm that you won't pay more than 10-20 to get there. That's still double the price that they would charge locals but that's fair enough! If you walk down the main road and take a first right before the balloon shop, there is a horse shelter so the people down there are more likely to care about the horses than the ones who stay in the heat right outside the hotel.

Please do take the time to go to the English founded animal hospital Brooke (who look after all the horses for free) and give a donation. This is also a good way of making sure the taxi/carraige takes you to the centre not just the tourist shop they want to take you to...!

We went as a family of 4 only to be given 1 bed!! We were move twice, ( once to a bungalow which was dark and had no balcony or terrace) and eventually upgraded to a nile view room but it was squashed. The grounds and view are beautiful, but signs around the pool about " no splashing" made us realise this is really not the best hotel to take children to.

Excellent food and service

We were a little disappointed on arrival, as our room with balcony onto the Nile was very small. Travel Inns in England are just a bit bigger, all facilities in the room were great except no hanging space or wardrobe. Staying for a fortnight, we had many pressed and ironed shirts, skirts and dresses, but such a small space to hang them, that dresses and skirts brushed the floor, and shirts cramped in that everything was creased. The view also was not quite as we would have liked being on 1st floor, the roof terrace over dining rooms and bars allowed others to be walking by at any time, and the Nile view was a little inhibited. The shower head also was so well worn that it only pointed straight down and flooded over the side onto the floor. We ended up having one armed showers, though there was loads of really hot water and fluffy clean towels. Being very tired when we arrived, we did complain but informed that there was nothing else available but could perhaps be moved later in the week. However once unpacked, we made the best of it, and said we would stay put. .. Therefore I feel the accomodation as such would only rate a 4*.
Making up for this was the absolute delight of friendly, genuinely helpful staff and a service 2nd to none. The food was excellent, good variety, well presented, and cooked well, at very reasonable prices. A beautiful pool and good poolside service made the holiday superb. We would certainly use the Sheraton again, and dispite the arrival problems, would say that service, cleanliness, and food were 5* rating. The whole complex is set away from Luxor town, and is so very peaceful, a taxi for a nominal fee gets you into the hustle and bustle of Luxor less than 10 minutes, and anyone visiting for the first time must be prepared for the hassle of Egyptians vying to gain business. It is their way of life, and in some respects adds to the culture and charm of Egypt.
Generally a lovely situated hotel, minor drawbacks only, highly recommended.

Sheraton - A comprehensive Review

Stayed at the Sheraton Resort for two weeks in April 2005. Had an absolutly fantastic time. Rooms plesant with everything you need, perhaps a little on the small side for a 5 star but VERY clean and well maintained.

Hotel resort lovely, Staff very friendly and only too keen to do everything they can to make your stay comfortable. Pool clean and plenty of loungers for those who want to relax. Don't go full board go B&B, plenty of good restarants at very reasonable prices both on site or only a short walk away. Italian restarant in the hotel is great and the food gorgeous. Pelicans and wild birds roam in a lovely lake beside your tables, the perfect setting for a romantic meal! Indian restaurate good, a little overpriced but well worth at least one visit. Grill not to be missed especially the marinaded meats/ burgers/ Egyption Kebabs!

Bar in the hotel very expensive (possibly to deter over consumption of alcohol), try the 'Royal Oak Pub' [Above the 7 days 7 ways restaurant] two minutes walk from the hotel. Cocktails and Beer are half the price and the pub is clean and well decorated. Good food there too for those who want basic English grub. English run with no hassel an average meal 30LE! Bombay Curry accross the road is also another good choice.

The Sheraton is idealy located. It's away from all the hassel and noisy traffic yet only a short walk from all the action. Plently to do and Luxor is well within walking distance. A courtesy bus runs from the hotel to Luxor Museum/ Luxor Temple if you dont fancy a walk. The Mummification museum is close by, as is the ferry crossing to the west bank for Valley of the Kings/ Queens. Only 1LE = 10p per trip per person! Karnac another great place to vist only 30LE in a taxi.

If you are planning to take a guide book don't put too much faith in the Lonely Planet Guide, despite having the latest edition entrance prices to most tempels/ tombs had doubled, and info on where to get tickets out of date!

Jewel of the Nile

A well appointed hotel as one would expect from this chain. Extremely helpful staff who always had a smile and for whom nothing was too dificult. We stayed in one of 90 bungalows situated within the hotel grounds. Each suite was well appointed with a double and single bed, TV, telephone, refridgerater, comfortable easy chairs and a superb view of the gardens.
If the hotel had a down side, the food lacked variety but having said that it was streets ahead of anything else offered in Luxor. It did have a wonderful Italian restaurant, La Mamas.
Well situated for visiting Luxor and Karnak Temples and the Valley of the Kings etc.

A so called 5 star experience

We stayed here in February 05. On arrival we were allocated a bungalow. Note: these bungalows are slightly away from the main hotel complex itself. The groundfloor bungalow we were allocated was appalling! Carpets were stained, the main lamp didn't work, there was a hole in the wall with wires coming out all over the place and you can physically open the windows from the outside. Basically, a room at a UK motorway service station would have scored a better rating than this so called "egyptian" 5 star. We had asked to move a couple of times but the reception desk insisted there were no rooms available and the manager was not available for us to speak to either. Anyhow, at 1am in the morning, something spooky happened and we eventually spoke to the hotel manager and was moved (after being very persistent) into the main hotel itself. As you can imagine, we were extremely disappointed with the receptionists on the way our request was handled. The room in the main hotel was clean, bright and in good working order but definately not sound proof and not 5 star and if you are allocated a room like we were overlooking the entrance expect to inhale fumes from the coaches even with all the windows closed. Sonesta St George and Le Meridien would be a better option.

sheraton hotel luxor - liked it fine

Stayed here with my two children first week of Feb. 2005. Not a 5* standard but a good 4* standard but who's complaining I found the rates very ok. Stayed in the chalets on the grounds which some complained of being a bit on the dark side and smelling of damp, preferring the inside hotel rooms. Can't say I had any complaints for the time spent inside anyhow was minimal and it was peaceful at nightime which is of more importance to us. The kids loved the space. Plenty of grounds to roam around. Nice little pond with ducks, storks and pelicans (two of each) swimming around. They have a little stall on the grounds where they allow you to buy soft drinks and water for local shop prices that you can use in your room which was a great idea. The Italian restuarant by the pond had excellent food. The buffet breadfast was excellent, food fresh. Staff very friendly and polite. Right by the nile so lovely views and ever so peaceful. Found the evenings very chilly I guess the time of year. Days just perfect for going around. Hassle awful but the hotel keeps you away from it all when needed. Would definitely recommend this hotel.

Great place to stay

We stayed at the Sheraton last year and I could highly recommend it but beware take the strongest tablets you can buy for tummy upsets as my husband suffered quite badly as did a few other people but this may not be in anyway connected to the hotel but the area in general as cleaniness is not high on the agenda elsewhere.
The staff were really friendly and could not do enough to help. The food particularly the breakfast were spot on as was the pool side snack bar where a lady stands baking bread.
Take care when going out into the main street as it can be quite daunting especially when you have a 20 year old blonde girl with you. Be firm and just carry on walking.
As a family we would highly recommend this hotel but please remember conditions in Luxor are not the same as at home and were quite a culture shock to other members of our party.

Egyptian 5*!

Arrived at the hotel at the end of January 2005. I must say I was a bit sceptical about the 5* rating at first! I was rewarded that it probably had been a 5* back in the 70s/80s! However everything was clean, hotel staff were very friendly and the breakfast buffet wonderful! After visiting some of the other hotels in Luxor I'm glad I chose the Sheraton as it seemed to be the only one with large grounds and a pool to die for! The others just opened straight out onto the street (where you immediatey get hassled!).

I would only go back here when I next go to Luxor!

Top Local Tips for Luxor

Taxis - scammed upon arrival at Luxor train station We were picked up by a Taxi at the Luxor train station. We asked how much to the Sheraton hotel - he said 10. We thought great, and we were on our way. Once we arrived, we gave him 10 Egyptian Pounds. He then said, "no, we agreed 10 dollars" - meaning US dollars. So be careful when you agree on a price with a taxi driver - make sure that you know which currency you are agreeing do. We didn't pay him his 10 USD for a two mile cab ride!! But we argued with him and at the end of the day gave him approx. 7USD - still a total rip off. I am pretty sure that they do this with Brits more often - because it would be easy for someone to say 10 pounds and not realize that they weren't talking about Egyptian pounds.

Walk from Valley of the Kings to Deir el Bahri This is a fantastic walk over the hills from the Valley of the Kings to Deir el Bahri which took us about 1 hr with rest stops but don't even think about in the hot months (probably from mid-April fo mid-October).

Must dos!! Karnack and Luxor temples, Valley of the Kings and Queens, balloon trip! Go in Feb - hot, but not unbearable!
