Historical Traveller Reviews of Mercure Luxor Hotel

Middle of the road Mercure

from tozzi
We have just returned from staying 7 nights at this hotel, which we booked as part of a two-centre stay in Egypt. This hotel is ideally located in Luxor for the karnak temple, bazaar's, and Luxor temple, and valley of the kings. We requested a 'nile view' room, which we received, which was fantastic. The room we had was large, comfortable, sheets changed daily, yet probably in need of a refurbishment. Room service was very efficient, so were reception, and the staff were all friendly, and most welcoming. Tipping staff is what is expected in Egypt, whether it is for using a public toilet, to having a picture taken by the locals, and most prefer eqgptian pounds to english currency. Taxi's and horse drawn carriages are the way to get around, which are very reasonably priced, just decide the price with the driver before your trip! The pool and outside restaurant area, Italian bistro, and reception are lovely, yet the bedroom floor levels do look like they are stuck in the 1960's. The phrase 'la shakrun' (which is a polite way of saying no thank you ) is widely used when you're approached by the locals for boat trip's and inviting you to buy from them. The hotel's french restaurant lacks ambience, as it is positioned in the walk-way between the hotel lifts and reception, with tables scattered around. The italian bistro is very good, and the afternoon tea was enjoyable, although this restaurant at night is always empty, persauding you to eat elsewhere. The bazaar in the hotel was very good, and it is advisable to always barter with the staff, yet accept their hospitality of egyptian tea or coffee, as it is a cultural aspect which you wouldn't receive in a higher standard hotel. My time in Mercure hotel was slightly ruined by my mother having 'gastroenteritis' during the last few days of the holiday, while speaking to a few other guest's they had experienced the same! Although it slightly impaired our overall view of the 'mercure', we would definately return to Luxor, and Egypt again, just in a higher standard hotel.

Great value and it was all we needed.

Some of the previous reviews that rated this hotel as terrible should not be seriously considered as they are from people stranded by delayed flights, therefore have not paid for that and only stayed for one night. Obviously there are differences between five, four and three stars hotels and the Mercure is not for people used to luxury.
We stayed there for one week in October and have no complaints. OK, the rooms are in need of refurbishment, but the hotel has three decent restaurants, a good pool, big lounge, nice bars and very friendly staff. Breakfast was also good enough.
It is well located and you can walk to Luxor Temple and Luxor Museum. It was easy to find a taxi to take us anywhere for 5-10LE.
But the thing I loved most was the Nile view from my window where I could see the Temple of Hatshepsut and the hot air balloons floating over the West Bank early in the morning.

Awful

from noraighol
We had to stay here overnight due to our flight being cancelled.
The first room we were shown too was nothing more than disgusting. Furniture broken, bathroom looked as if it had never seen a cleaner. Second room better but still poor.Cheap looking furniture, no double glazing, bed like concrete, very noisy.
Food very very poor, cold and limited amount.

nightmare day

from devonscouse
My wife and I had the misfortune to be dumped in this dive after the homeward flight was cancelled. It was only for 18 hours I am glad to say. The room was disgusting most of electrial sockets hanging off, unable to lock sliding door, pubic hairs in the bed, bedding dirty. Bathroom something out of the 1940 absolutely disgusting, tv not working fridge not working curtain hanging off. Did think off having a shower but looked around and had second thoughts. When paying guest advise you not to eat chicken and beef there must be something wrong. To anyone staying there in the near futrure good luck. I dont know if all the rooms are that bad but may be some tour rep should take a look round unannounced. We were accomodated on the ground floor in the old part.

Just love the place!!!

Have stayed here now about a dozen times, the staff are just so friendly and go out of their way to make sure everything is as it should be. Ok, rooms could be cleaned a bit earlier, but does it really matter, most people are out all day not waiting around to see what time the cleaners arrive!! Pool area is always spotless, cleaners are constantly polishing floors, doors, glass etc. Breakfast always offers plenty of choice with friendly waiters. Anything you want to know about sight seeing or the area, you need only ask and someone will provide all the information you require. Stayed with our son and his girlfriend last year, they had a fabulous time and cant wait to go back. We will be returning later this month, and know that we will receive a great welcome. If you ask for a Nile view the reception will always try to oblige, treat them with respect and you will be rewarded 100% throughout your stay. We have stayed in 5* hotels in Luxor, but non beat the Etap for its friendliness, and the locaction is ideal for seeing the rest of Luxor. Would not hesitate to recommend.

Fantastic Place!!!!!!!!!

Myself and a friend stayed at the Mercure Coralia between the 10th - 24th July 2006. What a wonderful hotel the staff were very friendly and helpful and would bend over backwards to help.

Great value for money a really good place to stay, had a great laugh, met some really nice people, egyptions and english.

I could not fault the hotel we had such a good time we are planning to go back in November this year!!!!!

Fantastic hotel, one of the best

from Chessy2006
My family and I stayed here for 2 weeks and it was absolutely fantastic. The staff couldn't help you enough, the place was spotless and would recommend it to anyone. We didn't want to leave and felt like our prayers had been answered when our flight was cancelled, yes the same flight as the last report from Belfast. The whole plane ended up back at this hotel. It was a great extra day onto our holiday. The staff managed to accommodation 300 extra passengers at such short notice, while serving them and the other guests already staying in the hotel with dinner (10pm at night for us), breakfast and even lunch. The staff bent over backwards to make people's unexpected stay a good one. Well done Mercure, we hope to be back again.

we were brought to this hotel to stay for the night after r flight had been cancled , the room we were put in was so bad that my daughter refused to enter it , the smell in it was disgusting , the floor looked like it had never been cleaned , the beds was dirty and the bathroom was horrendous , u could not even think of washin in the bath , toilet was not cleaned , no toilet roll or soap , this hotel might do for some people just as an over night stop over but i wouldnt advise any one to stay here , tryin to get lunch was like feeding time at the zoo , ive never saw a hotel where u had to que up with a plate to get food , the staff walked about like they were sleepin , was the nightmare end to the perfect hoilday we had in the meridien .

Just spent a fortnight at Mercure Luxor (Etap) and found it first class in every way. Service was great, facilities superb, rooms comfortable and clean and best of all, the staff very friendly and great fun. Simply can't fault this hotel.

Excellent hotel

from huyton
Have just stayed for a week,we liked it and had some excellent meals at very reasonable prices. There is a happy hpour 5-7p.m you pay 18 EL for your first beer then 9EL for each subsequent drink providing you keep to the same drink. There is a converted boat across the road, on the nile that has been converted to a cocktail bar their beer was only 10 EL.The staff are friendly and pleasant,I would reccomend this hotel to anyone.
