Needs a little time to get things rolling

from MILLER19
While Mara is very friendly and helpful, her accomodation and business are just getting started. The apartment we stayed in was very spacious, with fans but no air-con. It had a kitchenette with fridge and sink, but no way to heat food. The bathroom had no shower curtain, and the water pump cycled so the temperature of the shower cycled from too hot to too cold every 6 seconds. I think you give her a couple months to iron things out and it will be a great place to stay.

r at home

Just came back from a 4 day vacation in Luxor, I stayed in Mara house, it was fantastic, clean & tidy, all the staff were so friendly and Mara herself was more like a sister, very caring, goes the extra mile to avoid you any troubles, provides all the info you need and search the net and prints maps to help you find your way in the city, I would difinitly visit Luxor again but this time with my friends, and we'll stay in Mara House, the room is spacious, it's more like an appartment.

Mara House is the gold standard

from cousinone
My cousin and I spent 4 days at Mara House in October. We booked it based on Trip Advisor recommendations, and it was quite honestly one of the best experiences we had in Egypt.

Mara House itself is beautifully thought out, the cleanest place I set foot in in Egypt, and is on a quiet backstreet (priceless after staying in places right on the Nile in other cities- no traffic and horns keeping you awake all night!) Even without all these plusses, however, it is Mara herself (along with the amazing Sayeed) who makes the place wonderful. Literally NOTHING was too much trouble for her as she helped us to arrange transportation, guides, meals, and the finer points of negotiating some unique aspects of Egypt.
For example, while I was downtown in Luxor one evening, I stopped at an ATM machine to get some cash out.... and the ATM machine 'ate' my bank card- it didn't give the card back after my transaction was completed. When I returned to Mara House that night. I told Mara what happened. She was immediately on the phone (even though it was 10:30 at night!) to one of the bank directors to get him to have his people open the naughty ATM machine and get my card out and have it returned to me the next morning (instead of mailing it to my bank in the States, which is what the usual protocol would have been). Now That's above and beyond! Another evening when we were to tired to go out for a meal, Mara asked us what we wanted, had one of the staff go out, pick up the food for us, bring it back.... and we ate up on the rooftop garden with a lovely gin and tonic without having to leave.
Mara also serves a traditional Egyptian 4-course meal a few nights a week in the new restaurant area. Not only was this one of the most delicious meals we had in Egypt, but since Mara knew I was vegetarian she even had the chef vary the set menu of the meal to accommodate me.
If the people you meet are as important to you as the places you see as an independent traveler, I cannot recommend Mara House highly enough.

Go for it Mara!!

I can agree entirely with the previous reviews on Mara House in Luxor. Having just returned from a visit to Luxor and Nile cruise Mara has created something unique and deserves all the credit. The house, which she built from scratch, is extremely spacious and tastefully decorated in traditional Egyptian style with very spacious accommodation. Central to all downtown Luxor visits , Mara is on hand to offer information and advice, maps and timetables and a smile etc.
The offer of free taxi transfer from the airport or rail station is a delight upon arrival and everything went exactly according to plan. Mara has an inside knowledge of the place which can only be gained by living permanently and being totally immersed in that way of life and culture etc. Make use of it and for sure your trip will be more memorable for it.

Perfect hotel, great location

from blackelk
We stayed for five nights at Mara house in October and it fulfilled all we desired and more. The large, very clean rooms are up to a high standard. The staff is very helpful, friendly and do everything to make the guest feel at home. We had a stay including visits to all sights which turned out to be more then perfect. English speaking guides who took time enough at each place and together with the knowledge of the owner we discovered many hidden treasures in Luxor and beyond. The area surrounding the hotel is still the real Luxor with no hassles. Breakfast is served in the room at no extra charge and meals, traditional Egyptian food, at the rooftop is a great way of spending an amazing night. If you look for a hotel with that something extra to make it a great stay don't look any further, this is the place !!

a home away from home

from silouLondon
I stayed there with my mom for 3 nights. I was happily surprised to see that we had a whole apartment for us : huge kitchen and living room and a bedroom beautifully decorated.
mara and her staff were more than helpful from the first minute we arrived, they helped us with what to do around, mara gives you a detailed map and tips for the surroundings. they even helped us for our trips to the valley of the kings and queens by booking a car for us and even arranged our trip by mini bus to aswan then to abu simbel. They all speak englisg which is a great plus.
the house is a short walk outside of the city center which enables you to see a more traditional part of Luxor, it's also very close to the airport. its a great option if you want to get away from the tourist crowd for a couple of nights.
Thanks again for the wonderful stay!

Loved Mara House!

from roisinCork
Just back from a three week holiday in egypt. Our time spent at Mara House was by far one of the main highlights. Mara house was very clean with a lovely homely atmosphere and in a great location. Mara herself is a lovely, kind woman who took great care of us and made sure we were well looked after. The tours we did to the Valley of the Kings and Abydos and Dendera were amazing and Mara provided us with a wealth of information and stories before we headed off which really added to the whole experience, she really knows her stuff! I would definitely recommend Mara house to anyone travelling to Luxor , it is great value for money and will give you a real taste of egypt but with all the comforts of home!

Something Rather Special

from Merrycat
We are staying at Mara House for the fourth time and I am in trouble with Mara herself because every time I go home I promise to write a review, and I always forget. So this time I'm writing this while still in Luxor!

We are very happy to recommend Mara House to anyone wanting to stay in Luxor. The building is light and airy, very clean, and in a quiet, residential district. The owner organizes all the trips that we require so that we are able to see everything that Luxor has to offer (and there's a lot to see) with minimum effort.

Have no worries about finding the building---Mara sends a taxi to meet you at the airport. Bliss!

If you're coming to Luxor, Come to Mara House!

Fantastic place to stay in Luxor!

from Annabelle78
Just back from a month-long holiday in Egypt. Mara House in Luxor was one of the best places we stayed on our trip!! The house itself was lovely; beautifully decorated with all authentic furniture. Our room was spacious and very comfortable. Its only a couple of minutes walk from the centre of Luxor so its a perfect base if you want to explore the sights by yourself. Alternatively Mara House runs organised tours to all the major sights; we took the Abydos-Dendera tour which, because it's a little off the beaten track turned out to be one of the highlights of our holiday! The resturant adjoining the hotel is a little gem..its a banquet-style meal of all authentic egyptian food.. it was really tasty and good value aswell.
Mara herself is a lovely woman..she's extremely helpful & knows alot about the area and its history. There's a really personal touch to Mara House that almost makes you feel that you're home away from home! All in all, I would definitely stay there again and would recommend it to anyone who's planning on visiting Luxor!

Luxurious and unique apartments in Luxor

from TDP05
This was my third trip out to Mara House and I was bowled over again.

Mara house offers a unique chance of seeing Egyptian life outside of the tourist area!

The building is spotlessly clean and the apartments are luxurious and spacious, fitted either with air conditioning or fans. Each aparatment has a kitchenette and a lovely spacious living room as well as the bedrooms.

The Salhadeen restaurant and bar are on site, so food and drink are easily available.

The staff are very friendly and always willing to help you with anything. Mara in particular, willing to go to great lengths to help you with any plans you may have during your stay in Egypt.

I am already looking forward to my next trip out there.
